UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Sunday at Braddock Field. After the Cardinals scored the opening goal on a penalty kick and took a 1-0 lead into halftime, SVSU added two insurance goals in the second half to earn the 3-0 victory.
The game was scoreless until the 37th minute of play when the Huskies fouled Stephanie Strong in the box. Reegan Kingpavong converted the penalty kick to make it 1-0 Cardinals.
In the second half, Strong sent a shot that deflected off the crossbar right onto the foot of Jensen Taylor, who volleyed the ball into the net, giving SVSU a 2-0 advantage with 22 minutes remaining. In the final minutes, Zo Schultz sent a ball upfield and Strong beat the MTU goalkeeper to put the game away.
Olivia Argeros was outstanding in net for SVSU, making 10 saves. Strong added her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the win, while Kingpavong scored her fourth and Taylor her second of the season. Michigan Tech outshot the Cardinals 17-7.
The Cardinals travel to the University of Wisconsin Parkside at 1 pm on Friday in Kenosha, Wis.
