Barlow scores 3, Cardinals close regular season perfect

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team completed a perfect regular season with a win over Upper Iowa University Thursday at Braddock Field.

The No. 7 Cardinals ran away from the Peacocks with Danny Barlow leading the way with three goals in a 4-1 win to end the regular season 7-0-0 overall and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

SVSU is the outright GLIAC regular-season champion for the 2021 spring season and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLIAC Postseason Tournament.

Barlow got the scoring started early with a brilliant goal in the 16th minute. Alex Gloshen took a corner kick and placed it at the back post, where Benjamin Adamson headed it back to the middle of the six-yard box to Barlow for the header finish.

The score remained 1-0 for the Cardinals until Barlow rang a shot off the far post and in to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute. After UIU got on the board with a goal in the 63rd minute, Barlow reclaimed the momentum for SVSU. The UIU goalkeeper saved a corner kick from going straight in the net but punched it right to the foot of Barlow who completed his hat trick with a third goal of the game and his team-high eighth of the season.

SVSU added a goal in the 87th minute when Owen Marshall found Brady Walker to close it out.

The Cardinals outshot the Peacocks 26-6. Mason Maziasz made two saves in the win. The goal by UIU stopped a shutout streak of 401 minutes and 23 seconds for Maziasz and the Cardinals dating back to March 21 against Northwood University.

SVSU will enter the GLIAC Tournament as the top seed and will take on No. 8 seed UIU in the quarterfinals at 11 am Sunday at Braddock Field. With a win, SVSU will be the host of the semifinals and finals of the tournament on April 30 and May 2.
