Tennis Falls in Tough Battle Against Wayne State in Second Round of GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team saw its season come to an end after falling 4-2 in a tough battle against top-seeded Wayne State in the second round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Saturday morning.

The Cardinals struck early with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to move ahead 1-0 over the Warriors. Adriana Barrio doubled the lead with a win at No. 1 singles, but Wayne State pulled out the four wins needed to claim the clinch and advance.

SEASON WRAP UP
First-Team All-GLIAC selection Adriana Barrio finished the season 15-8 in doubles and 13-5 in singles to lead Saginaw Valley State University in the top slot for both. Senior Tara Erler joined Barrio at No. 1 doubles to finish the year 15-8. She was the team's No. 2 singles competitor, compiling a record of 11-10, and was All-GLIAC Honorable Mention for the second consecutive season.

Amelia Dickson finished 2024 12-10 in both doubles and singles play. Dickson's partner for much of the season, Elizabeth Stuart, was 9-12 in doubles and 7-7 in singles.

Johanna Michahelles registered a 12-10 mark in doubles play, while her partner, Lydia Liong was 7-10. Michahelles recorded a 7-12 mark as a singles participant; Liong was 8-5 during her freshman campaign.

Calli Sokolowski completed the year with a 2-3 record in doubles and 8-9 in singles.

SVSU finishes the season with an 8-11 regular season record and a 3-4 mark in conference play. The Cardinals earned the fourth seed in the GLIAC tournament and won their first-round matchup against Lake Superior State yesterday to make it to the semi-final round.
