SVSU Battles GLIAC Volleyball Leader Ferris State on the Road

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.— Madison Thompson and Patricia Pratt powered the Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team with 15 and 12 kills, respectively, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals lost a hard-fought 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-14 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to host Ferris State University at Wink Arena on Friday evening.

The first-place Bulldogs up their overall record to 20-9 on the season and 15-2 in the GLIAC, while Saginaw Valley falls to 10-18 overall and 5-12 in the conference.

For Pratt, she registered a career high with her 12 terminations on zero errors in 16 attempts for a sterling .750 attack percentage while adding five blocks. Peyton Gerstacker chipped in 41 assists, 25 digs and a match-high six total blocks.

Syann Fairfield (.383) and Claire Nowicki (.345) led the FSU offense with 20 and 11 kills, respectively. Kaylee Maat racked up 45 assists and 11 digs, while Nowicki completed a double-double with 21 digs and Leah Bylut came off the bench to post a match-high 25 digs.

The Cardinals evened the match one set apiece behind an efficient offense that hit .326 in the second stanza while holding the Bulldogs to just .075. SVSU, which never trailed, held leads of 3-0, 13-6 and 21-8.

But the Bulldogs outlasted the visitors in the third set, 25-23, to retake the match lead 2-sets-to-1. Ferris State found its offense by attacking at a .269 clip while SVSU had a respectable .227.

Saginaw Valley went up 11-8 in third before Ferris State went on a five-point run to go up 13-11. Neither team led by more than two points for the rest of the frame, which saw SVSU ahead 21-20 before the Bulldogs eventually pulled away.

In the fourth set, FSU went ahead for good on a Fairfield kill that made it 3-2 at the time. The Bulldogs hit .286 as a team while the Cardinals couldn't find their offensive rhythm at .029.

Saginaw Valley will have its regular-season finale at 4 p.m. Saturday at Grand Valley State University.
