Grand Valley State & Ashland Earn NCAA D-II Football Playoff Bids

Indianapolis, Ind.-- The NCAA Division II Football Committee announced today the field of 24 teams for the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship.  Grand Valley State University and Ashland University were among the six teams that earned postseason berths in Super Region No. 3.

#1-Ranked Grand Valley State received a first-round bye as the top seed in the Super Region No. 3 it was announced today by the NCAA D-II selection committee. Grand Valley State will play the winner of the match-up between fourth-seeded Ashland and fifth-seeded Minnesota State on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Ashland-Minnesota State contest will be played on Nov. 15 at Ashland.

Minnesota-Duluth is seeded second and will play the winner of the #3 Chadron State (Nebraska) and #6 Wayne State (Nebraska).

Grand Valley State (10-0) is making its eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA D-II playoffs, including its sixth as a top seed in its region. GVSU is 23-2 in the NCAA D-II playoffs since 2001, including a 14-0 mark at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale. The Laker senior class enters NCAA DII playoff action with a 50-1 career mark overall and a 10-1 mark in the playoffs.

For Ashland, this marks the first time in school history that the Eagles have earned playoff bids in back-to-back seasons.  AU will also host a playoff game for the first time in program annuls. Ashland is 8-3 and ended the season in second place in the GLIAC.  A year ago, AU lost in the first round of the playoffs at Central Washington, 40-24.
