INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA and CBS College
Sports Network announced a six-game football television package for
the 2010 season Tuesday (May 11) and Grand Valley State's
season-opener versus West Texas A&M will open the 2010
television schedule. Kickoff versus the Buffaloes is set for
Thursday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. in Lubbers Stadium.
The 2010 football season is the fifth since Division II and CBS
College Sports Network established a partnership to provide
Division II schools live national television exposure for their
football and basketball programs. GVSU claimed a 37-23 over West
Texas A&M to open the 2009 campaign.
Grand Valley State has won four NCAA DII National
Championships since 2002 and advanced to the NCAA DII title games
six times since 2001. The Lakers dropped a 30-23 decision in the
2009 title game to Northwest Missouri State. The 2010 Laker
football season will mark the beginning of the Matt Mitchell era.
Mitchell replaces former head coach Chuck Martin who led to two
National Championships and three title game appearances in six
years.
"We are excited to open the 2010 season on national television
versus a quality opponent like West Texas A&M," said Mitchell.
"We will get an opportunity to test ourselves right out of the gate
in 2010 and when you come to Grand Valley State you expect to play
quality opponents."
West Texas A&M won its last six games in 2009, including a
31-25 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the Lower Kanza Bowl in
Topeka, Kansas.
"Our partnership with CBS College Sports Network has provided
a national platform to help us tell the Division II story," said
Division II Vice President Mike Racy. "During the past four years,
we have brought the national TV spotlight to more than 50 Division
II campuses, for more than 100 Division II colleges and
universities, to showcase regular-season competition to a national
audience. In this spirit we have packaged another compelling
schedule this fall that will showcase Division II football from
seven different conferences and feature teams from all four of our
football regions."
All six games are on Thursdays at 8 p.m. Eastern time. Division
II and CBS College Sports Network also televise an annual package
of men's and women's basketball games. The 2010 basketball package
will be announced later.
