BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University freshman point guard Breland Hogan (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) and University of Findlay junior guard Nathan Hyde (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty Benton) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," respectively, as announced by the league office.

Freshman point guard Breland Hogan averaged 14.5 points per game, shooting 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the field, and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) at the charity stripe in leading the Lakers to two road victories last week, totaling career-highs in scoring in each game. Hogan scored a then career-high 12 points and broke a 73-73 tie by making two free throws with 1.5 seconds left in the 75-73 win at Lake Superior State on Thursday. Against SVSU on Saturday, he posted a team-high and career-high 17 points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.

Junior guard Nathan Hyde led the Oilers to a pair of home wins last week by averaging 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. In the 69-61 win over Michigan Tech on Thursday, Hyde scored 19 points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds. In the 75-56 win over Northern Michigan on Saturday, he scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting, hitting a career-high 7-of-10 three pointers in the game and blocking a career-high two shots. On the season, Hyde is averaging 17.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest.

Ashland Eagles (13-12, 9-11 GLIAC)

AU enters the last two games of the regular season tied with Northwood for the eighth and final spot in the GLIAC tournament. If the teams are tied after this week, AU would win the tie-breaker, Ashland went 2-0 against the ‘Wolves this season. Both of AU’s last two games are at home where the Eagles are 10-3 this season. However, both teams the Eagles host this week – Findlay and Northwood – defeated them earlier this year….sophomore forward Cole Moore (Lake Orion, OH) notched his second double-double of the season when he posted 17 points and 13 rebounds at Wayne State. Both figures are career highs…junior forward Kale Richardson (Carroll,OH/Bloom-Carroll) has averaged 16.0 ppg., over the last six games. Richardson had 20 points last week at Northwood and 15 at Wayne State, but didn’t lead the team in scoring in either game... In three of the last four games, Ashland has had three players reach double digits in scoring…in the final 1:59 at Northwood last Saturday, AU went 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Ashland connected on 82.4 percent (16-of-19) of its free throw attempts in the second half.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (14-11, 12-8 GLIAC)

FSU dropped two league road games at Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State this past week by a combined total of five points... Junior forward/center Justin Keenan had another impressive week as he averaged 26 points and nine rebounds in the two league road games. The 6-6 Keenan netted a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds in a double-double effort at Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (Feb. 18) before totaling a contest-best 24 points with six boards on Saturday (Feb. 20) at Lake Superior State. Keenan became the school’s all-time leader in made free throws at SVSU and also climbed into 10th place on the school’s career scoring list. Additionally, he also broke his own school single-season record for made free throws in the narrow setback to the Cardinals. Keenan shot over 53% from the floor in both games... FSU has clinched its 11th consecutive GLIAC Tournament berth and this year will be the Bulldogs’ fifth appearance in the event over the last six seasons... The Bulldogs were ranked eighth in last week’s NCAA D-II Midwest Regional Rankings.

 

Findlay Oilers (19-6, 15-5 GLIAC)

The Oilers won a pair of home games last week, beating Michigan Tech on Thursday by a score of 69-61 and winning 75-56 over Northern Michigan on Saturday …The two wins extend the Oilers home winning streak to 51 games…In the regular season, Findlay has won 89 straight games in Croy Gymnasium…Junior guard Nathan Hyde led the way after averaging 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest…In the win over Tech, Hyde had 19 points and a career-high eight rebounds … In the win over the Wildcats, Hyde had 24 points…He also drained a career-high 7-of-10 shots from behind the three point arc and blocked a career-high two shots… Junior forward Tyler Sparks recorded a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds…The Oilers are 119-2 in Croy Gymnasium during the past seven years…The two wins also clinched the South Division title for Findlay, giving them nine during its affiliation with the GLIAC…The Oilers have won eight out of the last nine South Division crowns…Hyde is looking to become the 40th player to reach 1,000 points at Findlay (981).

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (19-6, 15-5 GLIAC)

GVSU improved to 8-2 in its last 10 road games by totaling big wins at Lake Superior State and Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers are one win away from their fifth straight 20-win season…freshman point guard Breland Hogan (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) recorded his career-high in points in consecutive games, as he averaged 14.5 points per game in the two wins. Hogan scored 12 points and knocked down two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to snap a 73-73 tie at Lake Superior State on Thursday, giving the Lakers a two-point win. He followed that with a team-high and career-high 17 points in a 13-point win at SVSU. Hogan made 12-of-14 free throw attempts on the week …junior Justin Ringler (Reed City, Mich.) averaged 16.5 points and six rebounds while shooting 57.9 percent from the field in the two wins. Ringler now has 49 double-digit scoring efforts during his Laker career…sophomore guard Alvin Storrs (Northville, Mich.) scored 10.5 points per game and recorded a career-high five assists in the win over LSSU.

 

Hillsdale Chargers (12-12, 12-8 GLIAC)

The Chargers moved up to third place overall in the GLIAC standings after extending their winning streak to four games with wins over Northern Michigan (81-59) and Michigan Tech (79-55)…Hillsdale is 11-2 in its last 13 games after starting the season 1-10…The Chargers sit in third place in the overall GLIAC standings, by virtue of their 3-1 record against the other two 12-8 teams, Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State… Sophomore guard Tyler Gerber had a career-high 10 rebounds in Saturday’s win over Michigan Tech…The last time Hillsdale had 11 or more wins in any 13-game stretch in any season was 2001-02, when the team started the season 11-0 and earned a top 25 ranking…Sophomore Brent Eaton made his first five 3-point baskets in Thursday’s win over NMU…In two wins over the Wildcats, Eaton went 12-for-14 in 3-point shot attempts… Hillsdale has clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament, and with wins in its final two regular season games, will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and would host the No. 6 seed in the tournament.

 

Lake Superior State Lakers (13-12, 11-9 GLIAC)

 

LSSU seniors Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio), Garrett Konuszewski (Flushing, Mich.) and Jeremy Beasley (Detroit, Mich.) went out on a winning note as the Lakers beat Ferris State 69-66 in their final regular-season home game Saturday…Perkins, who is ranked fifth in the GLIAC in scoring, averaged 15 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists for the Lakers last week. The John Wooden Citizen’s Cup finalist has 1,209 career points and is ranked seventh in career three-point field goals with 172…Konuszewski averaged 10.0 points and 2.0 assists last week. He has 343 career assists, which also ranks seventh on the Lakers’ all-time list…Sophomore guard Kyle Hunt (Macomb, Mich.), who averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists last week, is ranked fourth in the GLIAC in average assists per game (4.4) and eighth in rebounding (6.2).

 

Michigan Tech Huskies (8-17, 7-13 GLIAC)

Michigan Tech played the GLIAC’s top two teams in each division in its last four games and went 2-2 … Tech led at Findlay 55-51 with five minutes to play before falling short of the upset … Mike Hojnacki (Milwaukee, Wis./Eisenhower) scored 26 points at Findlay and added 14 at Hillsdale for a 40-point total on the week. The 6-7 forward has averaged 17.3 over the last six contests to raise his season average to 12.0. Hojnacki tied a school record for 3-point percentage in a game by making all six of his tries at Findlay. The last player to accomplish that was Aaron Buckoski in 1998 … Both Hojnacki and freshman Ali Haidar (Windsor, Ont./Forster) have notched exactly 143 rebounds on the season for 5.7 per game averages … Tech had held eight straight opponents under 70 points until Hillsdale put up 79 last Saturday (Feb. 20) … Michigan Tech will honor its two seniors, forwards Chris Baugh (Detroit, Mich./De Porres) and Georgio Holt (Farmington Hills, Mich.), during a senior day ceremony prior to Saturday’s (Feb. 27) game vs. Saginaw Valley State.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (10-14, 7-13 GLIAC)

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team will close out the 2009-10 regular season this week with two home games against Saginaw Valley State (Thursday) and Lake Superior State (Saturday)…Raymont McElroy led the Wildcats last week against Hillsdale and Findlay with 21 and 15 points respectively…Mylan Murphy added a career-high 15 points against the Oilers as he was 6-6 from the floor …McElroy and Marc Renelique are each averaging 16.5 ppg to share the team lead…Chris Warner pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds against the Chargers …Warner leads the team with 39 steals and is third on the team in rebounds by averaging 5.2 rpg…Jared Benson is pulling down a team-high 6.1 rpg…Warner added six assists against Hillsdale and currently has 41 on the season…McElroy leads the team dishing the rock with 96 assists.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (12-12, 9-11 GLIAC)

Northwood went 1-1 last week, defeating Tiffin 82-74 before falling at home to Ashland 76-71 … the Timberwolves are now 12-12 overall, 9-11 in the GLIAC … Northwood is currently tied with Ashland for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament … NU will need to finish one game better than the Eagles to have a chance to reach the field because of Ashland holding the tiebreaker … four Timberwolves finished in double figures for the week, led by Lionel Sullivan (Detroit, Mich./DePorres) at 19.5 points per game … Dorian Pierce (Jackson, Mich.) averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game … freshman Booker Stoudmire (Belleville, Mich.) had a game to remember at TU, finishing with a career-high 24 points, going 8-8 from the floor against the Dragons, including a 7-7 mark from 3-point range … Chris Johnson (Belleville, Mich.) also had a strong game against Tiffin, finishing with 17 points, 15 rebounds, two blocks and two steals … Northwood will travel to Ferris State and Grand Valley State to finish the regular season.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (15-10, 12-8 GLIAC)

Saginaw Valley is 15-10 overall this season and 12-8 in the GLIAC. This week the Cardinals defeated Ferris State in a game that was tight until the very end, 68-66. The Cardinals were unable to beat Grand Valley State on Saturday (Feb 20), but are looking to come back and win their last two regular season games this coming week on the road in an effort to secure a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal home game. Senior Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) is leading the way for the Cardinals, averaging 16.5 points per game. Junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights HS) is leading Saginaw Valley in rebounds per game, with 9.9 per contest. The Cardinals will travel to Northern Michigan on Thursday (Feb. 25) and to Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 27), where they will play their final two games of the regular season. Tip-off against Northern Michigan is scheduled for 7:30pm and the contest against Michigan Tech is set to start at 3:00 pm.

 

Tiffin Dragons (2-23, 1-19 GLIAC)

Tiffin University failed to step up the defense, allowing Wayne State to shoot 60 percent in the game in falling 91-74. Rafael Cuellar led TU with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Keenan Barlow had 14 points. Brian Scott and DeAngelo Jordan tossed in 13 points each…Tiffin University trailed only 37-35 at halftime, but a steady three point barrage along with a significant free throw advantage gave Northwood a 82-74 victory. DeAngelo Jordan led TU with 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Brian Scott added 19 points and Rafael Cuellar had 13 ppoints and 11 rebounds.

 

Wayne State Warrior (12-12, 10-10 GLIAC)

Wayne State ended its streak of tough-luck losses with a pair of home wins last week to move the Warriors within one win of clinching a playoff spot ... senior guard Larry Edwards (Benton Harbor, Mich.) recorded a career-high 15 points in the win over Ashland (5-6 3 PT) and followed that with eight points (2-2 3-PT, 2-2 FT) and nine assists versus Tiffin ... senior guard Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding) scored 29 points last week and dished out 11 assists to four turnovers ... Wright has also made 22 of his last 23 free throw attempts ... WSU tied a season-high with 35 field goals made in the Dragon contest, tying the mark set the previous Saturday against Findlay ... The Warriors shot over 60 percent (35-of-58) vs. TU ... Wayne State made 15 triples in the two games last week, the most in a week this season ... junior guard Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) had 32 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the two wins.
