Findlay's Michael Schmitmeyer Chosen As GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- University of Findlay freshman men's golfer Michael Schmitmeyer (St. Mary's, Ohio) has been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Freshman Michael Schmitmeyer of the University of Findlay men's golf team won the third NCAA Great Lakes Regional Tournament of the season on Monday, April 20 at the Purgatory Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana. Schmitmeyer shot a 145 to win the tournament and help the Oilers tie for fourth with a 608 (297, 311). Schmitmeyer was tied for first after the opening round, carding a 68. He came back in the second round and fired a 77 to edge Ferris State University's Kurt Valley, Eric Lilleboe, and Wayne State's Steve Cuzzort by one stroke to claim medalist honors.

Ashland -  The Eagles placed 13th out of 19 teams last weekend at the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament at Noblesville, IN. Ashland's top individual was freshman Jay Overy (Grafton, OH). He shot 152, seven strokes behind the leader, and finished in a tie for 14th. 

Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's golf team captured its fourth consecutive tournament championship as the Bulldogs won the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament #3, which wrapped up with final round play Monday (April 20) at the Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind. The Bulldogs took the title by six strokes over host Indianapolis. FSU shot a final-round score of 312 after taking the first-day lead with a 286 on Sunday (April 19) to finish at 598 overall. Findlay's Michael Schmitmeyer won the individual title with a 145 total, but finished only a single stroke in front of three individuals tied for second place including two Bulldog golfers in juniors Eric Lilleboe and Kurt Valley. Valley posted a 75 Monday after shooting a 71 in the first round while Lilleboe totaled a final-round score of 77 to go with his opening-day 69 as both finished with a 146-stroke total for the tournament. The tournament was the last scheduled regular-season event for the Bulldogs, who are likely to receive a berth and next compete in the NCAA Division II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional hosted by Grand Valley State on May 4-6 at the Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich.

Sophomore Justin Watren finished tied for 14th with a 152 (73, 79) while fellow sophomore Joe McGeean carded a 154 (78, 76), which was good for 26th at the event. Sophomore Kyle Nickson (78, 79 - 157) and senior Lucas Intagliata (79, 84 - 163) also competed for Findlay at the event. 

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State finished third at the Great Lakes Regional in Noblesville, Ind. with a two-day total of 605. The Lakers shot a 310 second round at the Pugatory Golf Course in cold, wet and windy conditions. Ferris State claimed top honors with a 36-hole 598, followed by Indianapolis' 604. Freshman Ben Brooks finishd tied for ninth with a 149 (+5), while Matt Johnson tied for 14th with a 152 (+8). Johnson's two-over par 74 second round tied for the low round of the day. Tyler Hering shot a 153 and tied for 18th, while Matt Malloure tied for 26th with a 154. Danny Vaughn carded a two-day total of 157 and tied for 44th. 

Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University men's golf team wrapped up the 2008-09 season by finishing 18th at the NCAA Division II Regional #3. NMU shot a two-round total of 677 (326-351) while fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Ferris State won the event with a 598 (286-312). Neil Passinault led the Wildcat contingent as he tied for 66th with a score of 163 (78-85). Tim Hartung, six strokes back, at 169 (84-85) tied for 81st. Cody Robinson tied for 85th with a card of 170 (78-92). Steve Pope finished 89th with a 177 (86-91) while Tom Sacasin was 90th as he shot a two-round total of 183 (93-90). 

Northwood - The Northwood University men's golf team placed 11th at the NCAA Regional #3 Monday afternoon (April 20). The Timberwolves shot team scores of 306 and 318 to finish at 624 overall. Ferris State was the overall winner at 598, followed by Indianapolis at 604. Scott Jaschuk (Milford, Mich./Oakland CC) led the way for Northwood, tying for 26th overall with a two-round total of 154 (74-80). Luigi Spadafora (Milford, Mich.) shot 77-78 to finish at 155 and tie for 33rd. 

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU golf team traveled to Indiana (April 18-19) to compete in the Great Lakes Regional #3, a two-round tournament featuring 19 teams. The Cardinals were unable to get into a groove and came home with a 14th place finish, shooting a 632. Ferris came in on top with a score of 598, Indianapolis finished second with a 604, Grand Valley came in third with a 605 and Bellarmine shot 608 and came in fourth. After shooting a 314 on Saturday, the Cardinals found themselves in 16th place, two strokes behind Missouri-St. Louis and Kentucky Weslyan. Senior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.) led the team on the day and shot 75. Andrew Funk from of Drury and Michael Schmitmeyer of Findlay tied for the day's best score, both shooting a four-under 68...Hocquard was the overall leader for the Cardinals and finished tied for 6th overall with a 4-over 148. Junior Brian King (Livonia, Mich) tied for 58th with a score of 160. The Cardinal Golf team will be in action again May 4th when they travel to Grand Valley to compete in the NCAA DII Super Regional. 

Tiffin - Tiffin finished 3rd of 9 teams at the West Virginia Wesleyan Invite, shooting a 623. Andy Kronander was the top finisher, taking 6th with a 79-75-154. Matt Cherry and Justin Epure also had top 10 finishes, tying for 9th with two-round scores of 155. Jon Kemman shot 163 and Spencer Schabel had 171. 

Wayne State - The Wayne State University golf team finished in sixth place at the third and final Great Lakes Regional, held at Purgatory Golf Club ... the Warriors, who were tied for seventh with a score of 300 after Sunday's first round, posted a score of 311 on Monday but moved up to sixth as the teams battled rainy and cool weather conditions on the course ... Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile., Mich.) finished in a three-way tie for second (69-77-146), one stroke behind medalist Michael Schmitmeyer from Findlay ... Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) tied for 12th (74-77-151), and Chad Johnson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) tied for 33rd (77-78-155) ... Michael Wouters (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) posted a score of 161 (80-81) to tie for 60th, and Hagan Risner (Garden City, Mich.) placed in a tie for 70th (85-79-164) ... Wayne State will await the results of the NCAA's selection process for the Super Regional, to be held at Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich.
