Bay City, Mich. -- Northwood University freshman defender/mid-fielder Fabio Ansaldo has been chosen as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week as announced by the conference office.

Fabio Ansaldo - Northwood University

Timberwolves' freshman Fabio Ansaldo scored three goals in a pair of Northwood victories last week, including the game-winner with 31 seconds remaining against Tiffin. He netted Northwood's first goal late in the first half during the Timberwolves 2-1 victory over Findlay on Friday. Ansaldo then scored a pair of second half goals in the Timberwolves 4-3 comeback win over the Dragons. The Timberwolves have won four straight matches and currently are in first place in the GLIAC.

Ashland - Ashland went 1-0 over this past week, beating Lake Erie, 3-0. Senior Aaron Favri scored his first goal of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Junior Adam Spannbauer added two more goals, bringing his season total to 9. His 9 goals are more than any AU player scored all of last season. He is also shooting an outstanding 47 percent on the season. The win improved the Eagles to 6-0, marking the first time the school has ever started 6-0 in school history. Ashland currently is ranked 18th in the country. The Eagles will play three matches this week. First, they travel to Ohio Dominican on Monday (Sept. 22), then host Northwood on Saturday (Sept. 26), and host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Sept. 28).
Findlay - The Oilers lost to
Northwood 2-1 on Friday and then defeated Saginaw Valley State 2-1
on Sunday to run their record to 2-4 on the season... Sophomore
Brennan Williams led the way by scoring a goal and assisting on the
game-winning one against the Cardinals...On the season, Williams
leads the team with three goals.
Northwood - Northwood earned a pair of one-goal
GLIAC victories last week, defeating Findlay 2-1 before downing
Tiffin in dramatic fashion 4-3 ... the Timberwolves have now won
four straight matches after opening the season 0-3 ... Northwood
gave up the first goal in both games but came back to earn wins in
both matches with game-winners in the final four minutes of
regulation of both contests ... in the Tiffin match, Northwood
trailed 3-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining but came back to
win in regulation ... the game-winner came from Fabio Ansaldo
(Hamburg, Germany) with 31 seconds remaining in the game ... he
netted two goals against the Dragons and three goals for the week
... two players scored all four of Northwood's goals against the
Dragons - Ross Aitchison (Berwick, Scotland) netted the other two
goals ... the Timberwolves out-shot their opponents last week 48-23
... Steve Hufstader (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern)
netted the game-winner against Findlay with 3:13 remaining on the
clock ... Northwood travels to Ashland for a match Friday afternoon
(Sept. 26).
Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley State University lost both its match-ups this week in hard-fought games against Tiffin and Findlay. The Cardinals were outmatched offensively against the Dragons on Friday (9/19) giving up three goals on 18 shots, and could not connect on any of their 13 shots. In the Sunday (9/21), SVSU could only connect on 1-of-24 shooting with two shots ricocheting off the goal posts. This week, the Cardinals are looking for victories on the road as they face Seton Hall (9/26), and Ashland (9/28).
Tiffin - Byron Kaverman scored two goals in the 3-0 win at Saginaw Valley State while also playing solid defense as TU posted a shutout...Jeff Frisch got the shutout in goal against the Cardinals, making 4 saves...Tony Iyayi came back from an ankle injury to score a goal and an assist in the win at Saginaw...Rhys Cannella, Michael O'Neill, and and Adi Vlad scored goals in the wild loss at Northwood, as Northwood scored three goals in the final 9 minutes to pull out the win.
