Bay City, Mich. -- Ashland University senior goalkeeper Ryan Cruise has been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Soccer "Player of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Ashland University senior goalkeeper Ryan Cruise led the Eagles to a pair of shut-out victories last week. Cruise played 94:08 minutes of shutout ball against Tiffin on Friday in a 1-0 overtime victory. On Sunday he continued to play well, shutting out the Findlay Oilers in a 1-0 victory. He tallied seven saves in the two contests, and has not allowed a goal in the last 212:54 minutes as keeper. The two shutouts bring Cruise's total to four on the season. He has 67 saves on the year.

Ashland - Ashland went 2-1 over
the past week. The 20th ranked team in the country, AU lost to
Mount Vernon on Tuesday (Oct. 21), 4-0, in a match where a majority
of the starters rested. At close to full strength on Friday (Oct.
24), the Eagles took on Tiffin and won in the 95th minute of
overtime, 1-0. Senior Aaron Favri scored the golden goal off a pass
from sophomore Zach Il'Giovine. On Sunday (Oct. 26), AU hosted
Findlay with the Eagles winning, 1-0. Junior Dan Gilmer scored the
only goal off a corner kick by senior Torrey Korsog. Senior keeper
Ryan Cruise played well in both contests, earning two shutouts. He
tallied seven saves in the two contests. Cruise has not allowed a
goal in the last 212:54 minutes as keeper. He now has four shutouts
on the season. Ashland improved its record to 15-2-1 overall and
7-1 in the GLIAC. AU also clinched the regular season GLIAC
championship with its win over Tiffin on Friday. AU has now tallied
36 assists as a team this season, which marks the fourth highest
team total in school history. Ashland plays its last regular season
match on Friday (Oct. 31) when it hosts Davis & Elkins at 7
p.m.
Findlay - The Oilers lost a pair of games last
week to fall to 6-10 on the season...Sophomore Brennan Williams
scored the lone goal for Findlay during the week which came in a
5-1 loss at Saint Joseph's...The Oilers also lost 1-0 on the road
to 20th ranked Ashland...Williams currently leads the team with
seven goals on the year.
Northwood - Northwood men's soccer went on the
road and had two victories...NU defeated Saginaw Valley State, 3-1
and Lake Erie (Ohio), 1-0...Ross Aitchison (Berwick, Scotland)
opened the scoring against Saginaw Valley with a penalty kick
goal...Jacob Walsh (Grand Ledge, Mich.) made four saves to earn the
victory...The Timberwolves travel to Urbana (Ohio) Monday, Oct. 27
and host Saginaw Valley on Sunday, Nov. 2, with both matches
starting at 2 pm.
Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley State
University won one game, and lost one game this week. In the
Cardinals' win, SVSU was able to get five goals against Rochester
University on Wednesday (Oct. 15). Cardinals got on the board early
when senior Brent Walker (Owosso, Mich./Owosso HS) dribbled the
ball 30 yards and beat Oiler's goalkeeper Daryl Lotz. Later in the
first half, Findlay had a penalty shot, and didn't miss to knot the
score at 1-1. A mere 20 seconds later, the Cardinals got back on
top when junior Vinny Vasilevski (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica
Eisenhower HS) scored at the 41:26 mark to take the SVSU to
halftime with a one-goal lead. In the second half, the Cardinals
extended their lead at the 56 minute mark with Larry Ferreira
received the ball from Paul Gracyk and put it passed Lotz.
Vasilevski knotched his second goal of the game at the 64 minute
mark to round out the game's scoring. In Sunday's matchup against
Ashland, the Cardinals lost 4-3 in the first overtime. Senior Brent
Walker (Owosso, Mich.) did manage to tally three points in the game
with one goal, and two assists.
Tiffin - Jeff Frisch made 8 saves in a tough overtime loss
to Ashland 1-0. The Dragons dropped to 10-6 overall with the loss,
with a 4-3 record in the GLIAC.
