Tiffin's Rhys Canella Named GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Tiffin University junior midfielder Rhys Canella (Luton, England) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after recording two goals and two assists in a pair of GLIAC wins last week.

Junior midfielder Rhys Cannella tallied two goals and two assists as the Dragons posted a 2-0 week. He recorded two goals and an assist in a 5-3 come-from-behind win at Saginaw Valley State. He tied the game in the 48th minute with a goal, then scored again to put TU ahead in the 53rd minute. Canella finally assisted on the gamewinning goal in the 57th minute. In a 1-0 victory at Northwood, Cannella assisted on the game’s lone goal in the 28th minute.

Ashland Eagles (6-2-4, 3-0-1 GLIAC)

The Eagles went 1-0-0 this past week in non-conference action. AU played at Lake Erie on Thursday (Oct. 8) and left Painesville with a 3-0 victory. Ashland received goals from senior James Livingston, senior Max Hiltner and sophomore Andrew Iden. It marked Livingston’s fourth goal of the season and he sits in fifth in the conference in points with 12. Senior Blaize Lishewski earned his fourth consecutive shutout. He has not allowed a goal in 414:21 minutes. It also marked his seventh shutout of the season, which set a new single-season shutout record at Ashland. The Eagles play three games this week. They travel to Urbana on Tuesday (Oct. 13), and then host Northwood on Friday (Oct. 16) and Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 18).

 

Findlay Oilers (5-7-1, 2-4-0 GLIAC)

The Oilers went 1-1 last week on the road, defeating Northwood 2-1 in overtime and losing 1-0 to Saginaw Valley State…In the win over Northwood, sophomore Corey Keister had a goal and an assist while junior Brennan Williams collected the game-winner in overtime…On the season, Keister has a team-high 10 points with four goals and two assists…Junior Mate Farkas

 

Northwood Timberwolves (5-7-1, 2-3-1 GLIAC)

The Northwood men’s soccer team dropped a pair of one-goal games last week, falling in overtime to Findlay 2-1 before losing to Tiffin 1-0 on Sunday … Northwood is now 5-7-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the GLIAC … NU appeared to be on their way to a win against Findlay when Mike Carroll (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) took a feed from Ross Aitchison (Berwick, Scotland) and scored in the first half … the Timberwolves held that lead until the 89th minute when the Oilers tied the score … Findlay then earned the win in overtime with just 11 seconds remaining in the first extra session … against the Dragons,  Tiffin scored the lone goal of the game in the 28th minute … Northwood will travel to Ashland Friday for its lone game of the week.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (4-8-2, 1-4-1 GLIAC)

SVSU fell to Tiffin University 5-3 (Oct. 9) in a GLIAC match-up. The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early when junior Anthony Palazzolo found the back of the net on a pass from senior Kevin Fox two minutes into the game. Andy Burgeson added another goal for Saginaw Valley in the 18th minute to put the Cardinals up 2-0. The Cardinals would add one more goal in the 79th minute of the game when freshman Zachary scored off a pass from Burgeson... The Cardinals defeated the University of Findlay(Oct. 11), 1-0. SVSU took the lead in the 13th minutes of the game when Fox scored his seventh goal of the season off a pass from senior Ryan Seelhoff. Senior goaltender Piotr Kazmierczak held the opposition scoreless making six saves. The Cardinals improved to 4-8-2 overall on the season and 1-4-1 in the GLIAC, Saginaw Valley continues play Friday (Oct. 16) when it travels to Urbana University at 4:00pm.

 

Tiffin Dragons (8-2-1, 4-1-1 GLIAC)

TU trailed 2-1 at the half but rallied for four unanswered goals in the second half to beat Saginaw Valley State 5-3. TU fell behind 2-0 early before Roger Kummer made it 2-1 on a pass from Michael O’Neill in the 25th minute. After halftime, the Dragons turned it up a notch, with Rhys Cannella getting the first of two goals in the 48th minute off a Chad Kulchar feed to tie the score 2-2. In the 53rd minute, Cannella scored again off an assist from Adam Fussell to give TU the lead. Ashton Campbell continued the onslaught in the 57th minute with a goal off a Cannella pass, while Paul Brodnick finished the scoring for TU in the 76th minute off a pass from Kummer. Jeff Frisch got the win in goal, making 2 saves, while TU outshot the Cardinals 20-13… TU bounced back from a loss earlier this season to Northwood, beating the Timberwolves in the rematch 1-0. Michael O’Neill scored the game’s lone goal in the 28th minute from the left side off a cross from Rhys Canella, and the Dragons defense tightened up the rest of the way for the win. TU, which outshot Northwood 17-10, got the shutout in goal from Jeff Frisch, who made 3 saves in 90 minutes.
