Ashland's Ross Ashley Named GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University senior forward Ross Ashley (Ashland, Ohio) earned his second GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" award of the 2009 season  after leading the Eagles to a pair of victories and a tie last week.

Senior Ross Ashley continued his stellar senior season as he added three goals in three games this past week. He scored the first two goals for the Eagles on Tuesday (Oct. 13) in a 4-0 victory at Urbana. He scored his third goal of the week against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 18). He now has seven goals on the season, which puts him in a tie for third in the GLIAC. He has 21 goals in his career, which ties him for sixth on AU’s all-time goals list.

Ashland Eagles (8-2-5, 5-0-2 GLIAC)

Ashland went 2-01 this past week... AU traveled to Urbana on Tuesday (Oct. 13) and defeated the Blue Knights, 4-0. Returning home, Ashland hosted Northwood on Friday (Oct. 16) and played to a 1-1 draw. On Sunday (Oct. 18), the Eagles hosted Saginaw Valley State and won with a 2-0 victory. Senior forward Ross Ashley scored three goals on the week. He now has seven goals on the season, which puts him in a tie for third in the GLIAC. He has 21 goals in his career, which ties him for sixth on AU’s all-time goals list. Ashley also has 51 points in his career to put him into sixth place on AU’s all-time points list. Against SVSU, freshman Mitch Deyhle scored his first collegiate goal. The Eagles travel to Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 23) and Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 25).

 

Findlay Oilers (7-7-1, 2-4-0 GLIAC)

The Oilers captured a pair of wins last week…They defeated Lake Erie on the road 3-0 and then came away with a 3-2 win in double overtime at home against Mercyhurst…Sophomore Corey Keister scored the game-winning goal against Mercyhurst and added another against Lake Erie…Junior Brennan Williams also scored two goals during the week…On the season, Keister has scored six goals while Williams has added five…Williams also has three assists.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (5-7-2, 2-3-2 GLIAC)

NU picked up a 1-1 draw at #25 Ashland Friday afternoon (Oct. 16) in its lone action of the week …The opening 45 minutes proved to be a defensive battle – there were a total of just nine shots (Ashland 5, Northwood 4) and one corner kick (Ashland) … NU finally tied the score in the 82nd minute as Mike Carroll (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) took the ball off a defenders foot and netted his second goal of the season, both of which have come in the Timberwolves’ last three games … Neither team would muster much in the overtime periods, as the Eagles had the lone shot on goal in extra time … for the match, Ashland finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 8-2 edge in corner kicks … Northwood keeper Matt Renouf (Romsey, England) finished the game with five saves … NU will travel to Wisconsin-Whitewater October 27th for a 7 p.m. match.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (4-10-2, 1-5-1 GLIAC)

SVSU lost to Urbana University, 3-2 (Oct. 16). The Cardinals took an early lead at the five minute mark when junior Anthony Palazzolo scored on assists from Zachary Myers and Kevin Fox. Just minutes later freshman Robert Short scored his second goal of the season to give Saginaw Valley a 2-0 lead. Urbana would score a goal to make the score 2-1 going into the half. The Cardinals would remain scoreless in the second half, while Urbana would add two more goals to make the score 3-2...SVSU team fell to Ashland University (Oct. 18) 2-0 in a GLIAC match-up. The Cardinals competed well but were not able to get the ball past the Ashland goaltender. Freshman Myers led the Saginaw Valley offense with three shots. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 4-10-2 on the season and 1-5-1 in the GLIAC, while Ashland improves to 8-2-5 on the season and 4-0-2 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 24) when they travel to Ohio Dominican University at 4:00pm.

 

Tiffin Dragons (10-2-1, 4-1-1 GLIAC)

Senior D Tony Iyayi (Lagos, Nigeria) had 2 goals and an assist in the Dragons 2-0 week. He scored both goals in a 2-1 double overtime win at Ohio Dominican, tying the game with 10 minutes in regulation on a breakaway and then winning it in the first minute of the second overtime period on a shot from 15 yards out. He then had the assist on the game-winning goal in overtime in a 2-1 victory over Seton Hill… TU scored a dramatic 2-1 victory on the road against Ohio Dominican. Jeff Frisch got the win in goal for TU, allowing 1 goal in 101 minutes while making 4 saves….Tiffin University scored a goal in overtime to beat visiting Seton Hill University 2-1. Ashton Campbell scored the game wining goal in the 97th minute. TU took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Rabii Karanouh hit a shot after Rhys Cannella made a touch pass to him. The Dragons outshot Seton Hill 25-10. TU got five saves from Jeff Frisch.
