ODU's Tyler Gleason Named GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. -  Ohio Dominican University senior goalkeeper Tyler Gleason (Grove City, Ohio) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading the Panthers to a 2-0 week in GLIAC play.

Ohio Dominican Univeristy senior Tyler Gleason helped the Panthers go 2-0-0 in GLIAC play this past weekend. He posted his conference leading third shutout of the season Friday evening, a 1-0 decision at Tiffin. Gleason allowed just just two goals to Findlay on Sunday in a 3-2 ODU victory. Gleason posted 14 saves in the two matches and now leads the GLIAC with a goal against average of 0.86 and save percentage of 0.838.

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles had the weekend off after dropping a 6-1 decision at NAIA No. 3 Notre Dame College on Wednesday.  Freshman, Louis Clark scored the Eagles’ lone goal in the game, his fourth of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Nolan,  made nine saves for the Eagles, who have lost two straight games in the regular season since the 2007 season, when Ashland was 0-17-1. The Eagles, however, have advanced to the NCAA playoffs in the last two seasons.



Findlay Oilers

The Oilers went 0-2 last week, losing 2-1 at Mercyhurst and 3-2 at home to Ohio Dominican…In the loss to the Lakers, Senior Gary Brown scored the Oilers only goal…In the loss to Ohio Dominican, Freshman Shane McGee and Senior Mate Farkas each scored goals…Freshman Logan Lipinski added an assist…Senior Brennan Williams leads the  team with three goals on the year.

 

Lake Erie Storm  

The Storm dropped two non-conference road matches on the week, as they fell to Mercyhurst, 5-0, and Gannon, 6-0.  Lake Erie sophomore goalkeeper Ricky Carreira made 15 saves in the losing efforts. The Storm close out a six-game road trip at Walsh University on Tuesday before they return home this weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches.


 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Saginaw Valley State Wednesday afternoon (September 22) … Northwood is now 3-2-2 overall, 1-2-2 in the GLIAC. SVSU stands at 4-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the GLIAC … Saginaw Valley got on the board first, netting the opening goal in the 40th minute on just their second shot of the game … NU carried the play for the majority of the half, out-shooting the Cardinals 8-2 … the Timberwolves also earned both of the corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes … just over six minutes into the second half, the Timberwolves leveled the score … Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland) took a feed from Liam MacHugh (Toronto, Canada/Neil McNeil) and beat the keeper to make the score 1-1 … Northwood continued to control play, out-shooting the Cardinals 7-2 in the second half … both teams had chances in the extra sessions, but neither was able to convert … Northwood held a 19-7 edge in shots for the match and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks … NU returns to action September 29 with a match at Siena Heights. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

 

Ohio Dominican Panthers

The Panthers ran their record to 6-1-0, 5-1-0 in GLIAC action and extended their road win streak to five games this past weekend with a 1-0 victory at Tiffin Friday night, followed by a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Findlay on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Tyler Huerkamp and freshman Sean Lipps each scored their first collegiate goals in Sunday’s win. Junior, Felix Darko also scored his team leading third goal against the Oilers. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Gleason leads the GLIAC with a goal against average of 0.86, save percentage of 0.838 and is tied for first with three shutouts. ODU steps out of GLIAC play this week for a couple non-conference road games, taking on former American Mideast Conference foe, Urbana, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, before traveling to NCAA Division III No. 16 Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 2.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

Saginaw Valley tied in their re-match against Northwood University on Wednesday (9/22) 1-1 in double overtime.  Freshman Noah Sawyer scored the Cardinals’ only goal of the match.  The Cardinals defeated Davenport University on Saturday (9/ 25) when sophomore Zach Myers found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the first overtime to make the score 3-2.  Saginaw Valley will return to action on Friday (10/ 1) when it travels to Lake Erie for a 7:00 pm contest before playing at Ashland on Sunday (10/3) in a 2:30 pm match.

 

Tiffin Dragons

Tiffin allowed a goal in the fourth minute and the Ohio Dominican defense held in a 1-0 win. While Tiffin led the Panthers in both total shots (18-9) and shots on goal (10-4), it was the first shot of the game by ODU that proved the difference. Senior goalie Jeff Frisch grabbed three saves in four shots faced…The Dragons allowed a goal in each half while the Lakers stopped all four shots faced as Tiffin fell to Mercyhurst 2-0. The Dragons were outshot 22-5 for the game, including 9-4 in shots on target. Goalkeeper Jeff Frisch grabbed six of eight shots faced.
