BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University freshman forward Louis Clark (Brighton, England) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after recording five points this week, all in the first half of Ashland’s 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday afternoon.

Ashland freshman Louis Clark recorded five points this week, all in the first half of Ashland’s 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday afternoon. He scored in the 14th and 34th minutes and assisted on Adam Spannbauer’s (Akron, Ohio/Firestone) goal in the 31st minute. The freshman now has a league-high 11 goals this season and is tied for fifth in AU’s single-season history with four games to play. He also has two assists on the season and is tied for the league lead in points per game (1.85).

Ashland Eagles

The 17th-ranked Eagles went 1-0-1 on the road this week, playing Northwood to a 1-1 draw on Friday before beating Saginaw Valley, 3-0, on Sunday. Ashland extended its regular season conference unbeaten streak to 20 games. Freshman Louis Clark (Brighton, England/Hove Park) scored twice and assisted on the other goal in AU’s win over the Cardinals. His 11 goals this season place him tied for fifth all-time in single-season goals in AU history. Adam Spannbauer (Akron, Ohio/Firestone) scored his 20th career goal in the win over SVSU. He ranks ninth all-time in program history. Sophomore keeper Justin Nolan (Medina, Ohio/Highland) had seven saves on the week. The Eagles host second-place Ohio Dominican on Friday at Ferguson Field at 2:30 p.m. AU is one point ahead of the Panthers in the GLIAC standings.

Findlay Oilers

The Oilers went 1-1-1 last week.  They tied Urbana 0-0, defeated Ohio Valley 1-0 and dropped a 5-2 decision to Ohio Dominican.  In the tie against Urbana, Matthew Brooks stopped five shots to stone the Blue Knights.  Corey Keister scored the Oilers lone goal against Ohio Valley while Alex Oliver and Gary Brown scored against the Panthers.  Logan Lipinski had two assists during the week.  On the season, Brennan Williams leads the team with four goals.

Lake Erie Storm  

The Storm had its most competitive GLIAC weekend thus far, with a pair of 2-1 road losses, both coming in overtime.  Friday night, Lake Erie led at halftime at Saginaw Valley St. when senior midfielder Justin Mihaly (Lowellville, Ohio/Ursuline) found junior forward Marco Gaudio (Cambridge, England/Impington Village College) for the score. Against Northwood on Sunday, Lake Erie trailed 1-0 late in the second half when Gaudio scored his team-high seventh goal of the season in the 84th minute to send the match to overtime.

Northwood Timberwolves

Northwood went 1-0-1 last week, playing to a 1-1 draw against Ashland before earning a 2-1 overtime win over Lake Erie.  The Timberwolves are now 6-4-3 overall, 3-3-3 in the GLIAC.  NU has gone 3-0-1 in their last four matches.  Three different Timberwolves scored goals last week: sophomore Chen Tzfania (Hod Hasharon, Israel), sophomore Mitchell Brent (Milton Keynes, England) and junior Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland).  Lough’s goal was an overtime game-winner against Lake Erie.  For the week, Northwood out-shot its opponents 46-18.  For the season, NU has attempted 197 shots compared to just 131 for its opponents.  Northwood travels to Ohio for a pair of matches this week, taking on Findlay Thursday before facing Tiffin on Saturday.  NU tied versus Findlay earlier this season and lost to the Dragons.

Ohio Dominican Panthers

The No. 24 Panthers ran their unbeaten streak to four this past weekend, battling to their first tie of the season, a 1-1 draw in two overtimes at home against Tiffin on Friday night, before disposing of Findlay, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, ODU erupted for five second half goals by five different players to down the Oilers. The five scores and plus three goal differential are both season highs for the Panthers. Pat McGrath (Sr./Cincinnati, OH) and Felix Darko (Jr./Reynoldsburg, OH) both finished the game with three points, recording one goal and one assist each. Darko also scored the Panthers lone goal in the 79th minute against Tiffin on Friday evening. His team-leading seven scores and 17 points ties him for third in the GLIAC. A road showdown with No. 17 Ashland awaits the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 22. ODU will conclude Ohio GLIAC play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24 as they take on Lake Erie in their final road game of the season.

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley men’s soccer team defeated Lake Erie, 2-1 on Friday (Oct. 15) and fell to Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 17), 3-0.  The Cardinals were led by freshman Morely Burns, who scored the first goal against Lake Erie and assisted on the game winner.  Senior captain Anthony Palazzolo had the game winner against Lake Erie for the Cardinals.  Saginaw Valley will travel to Tiffin on Thursday (Oct. 21) to take on the Dragons at 3:00 pm and Findlay on Saturday (Oct. 23)at 1:00 pm.

Tiffin Dragons

Tiffin University battled back from a 1-0 deficit late in the second half to force overtime, eventually tying Ohio Dominican 1-1 after two overtimes on the road in another big GLIAC matchup.  The Panthers scored in the 79th minute but the Dragons wasted little time bouncing back as junior Ashton Campbell took a cross from junior Michael O’Neill on the right side and drilled it home to tie the score at 1-1. The Dragons held a 24-14 shot advantage but could not get the game winner through two overtime periods. Senior Jeff Frisch made 6 saves over 110 minutes.  Tiffin also picked up a solid win on the road at Seton Hill, beating the Griffins 3-1 to improve to 7-5 overall.  The Dragons, who outshot Seton Hill 18-7 in the game, got on the board early in the first half when junior Nick Kutch took a corner kick from freshman Pierre De Pauw and buried it in the net for a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute.  After the Griffins equalized in the 17th minute on Jordan Eddens’s shot, the Dragons’ Edison Benda,freshman put TU ahead for good in the 49th minute off a pass from Michael O’Neill. TU got an insurance goal in the 89th minute when De Pauw got a goal off a pass from Benda. De Pauw and Benda both had a goal and assist in the victory.  Jeff Frisch got the win in goal, making 4 saves over 90 minutes of work.  This week the Dragons take on Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 21 and Northwood on Oct. 23, both at home.
