University Center, Mich. -- The University of Indianapolis then claimed the 2009 NCAA Division II Softball Midwest Super Region championship with a 12-3 victory over Saginaw Valley State University at the SVSU Athletic Complex on Saturday (May 16). The Greyhounds move on to play in the Division II Softball World Series next week, having won the best-of-three Super Region series over the Cardinals, two games to one.

Saginaw Valley State- Saginaw Valley State University took a 1-0 series lead over the University of Indianapolis after the first game of the NCAA Division II Midwest Super Regional on Friday (May 15). The Cardinals came from behind to defeat the Greyhounds, 2-1, in the first game of the best-of-three series. SVSU sophomore Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) allowed just three hits through the first five frames, while UIndy's Meagan Russell surrendered just three hits of her own through five. The Cardinals would start their comeback in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich) recorded a one-out pinch-hit single. Peterson advanced to second on a groundout, and then to third after a UIndy infield error allowed Kaiser to reach second base. Marsha Beaubien then lined a pitch up the middle that was tipped by Russell and gloved by the UIndy's Jamie Keltz, but an errant throw allowed both Peterson and Kaiser to score to end the game. Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind./Central HS)came in and got the last two outs in the seventh inning to pick up her 12th win of the season. Indy evened the series with Saginaw Valley State University at one game each after posting a 5-2 victory in game two on Saturday (May 16)...The University of Indianapolis then claimed the 2009 NCAA Division II Softball Midwest Super Region championship with a 12-3 victory over Saginaw Valley State University at the SVSU Athletic Complex on Saturday (May 16). The Greyhounds move on to play in the Division II Softball World Series next week, having won the best-of-three Super Region series over the Cardinals, two games to one. Fulton took the loss for the Cardinals, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing seven runs, but just two earned runs on nine hits and seven strikeouts. Fulton ends the season with an 18-6 mark. The Greyhounds, having reached NCAA Division II postseason play for just the second time in school history, are now 36-19 on the season and will make their first appearance in the D-II college world series. The Cardinals, who surrendered more than six runs in a game for the first time all season, close the 2009 campaign with a 39-11 mark.
