MICHIGAN TECH CLAIMS 2015 GLIAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE

Michigan Tech captured the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Championship on Saturday (March 8) at the Student Development Complex Gym in Houghton. The Huskies used an 18-point, five rebound performance in the championship game from Kelli Guy to capture the title over Ashland by a final score of 68-52. The Huskies also used 26 points from the bench to capture the crown on their home court.

The top-seeded Huskies defeated No. 4-seeded Grand Valley State 77-66 in Saturday's (Mar. 7) first semifinal thanks to 27 points and nine rebounds from Jillian Ritchie and 25 points and 14 rebounds credited to Danielle Blake. Michigan Tech went a stellar 27-for-29 from the foul stripe, including 8-of-8 from Ritchie and 13-of-15 for Blake. The Huskies owned a 18-4 advantage on second chance points in a contest that changed leads seven times with nine ties. The Lakers fell despite a career-high 28 points for Brionna Barnett. 

The second semifinal will pit saw No. 3 Ashland jump out to a 20-3 advantage and never look back defeating Walsh 80-64. The Eagles advanced to Sunday's title game despite 23 turnovers but were helped out by a 48-16 points in the paint advantage. Taylor Woods paced the Eagles with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Laina Snyder also poured in 17 points, while GLIAC Freshman of the Year Andi Daugherty pulled down ten boards. Walsh amassed three players (Funderburgh 14, Trujillo 11, Graham 10).
