Northwood's Amanda Watson Named GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University sophomore forward Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio,/Clay) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after recording three goals and an assist over the weekend.

Amanda Watson was in on all of Northwood’s goals in the Timberwolves 4-1 victory over Ashland, scoring three goals while assisting on the other. After Northwood trailed 1-0 early, Watson netted the next three goals to put the game away. On the season, Watson leads the GLIAC with eight goals and 19 points.

 

-----GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Notes-----

Ashland Eagles (3-6-1, 0-5 GLIAC)

The Eagles played two games this past weekend and lost both contests. AU traveled to Northwood on Friday (Sept. 25) and lost, 4-1. Sophomore Kim Barry scored the Eagles’ lone goal. It was her second of the season and second of her career. On Sunday (Sept. 27), Ashland played at Saginaw Valley and lost, 4-0. On the week, senior goalkeeper Krista Herbst made 20 saves, which gives her 75 on the season. She has 186 saves in her career, which puts her in second place on the AU all-time saves list. Robyn Lymangrover (1995-96) holds the top mark with 209 career saves. The Eagles host Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 2) and Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 4).

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (1-7-1, 1-4 GLIAC)

Senior forward Kari Alsager (Mount Pleasant), a converted goalkeeper, tallied her first collegiate goal with a first-half header in Sunday’s (9/27) 3-1 conference home loss to Findlay. She also registered two shots on goal in the contest. Sophomore forward Bri Borgman’s (Holland/West Ottawa) 12 points in nine matches this season represents a career season high, eclipsing her 11 points in 19 contests a season ago. Borgman has scored a combined five goals in her last four outings, which included a three-match streak (9/18-25). She leads the team in scoring with six points. Senior forward Megan McCabe (Brighton/Pinckney) set a new season high in points with her fifth of this fall against Findlay last Sunday (9/27) on an assist. McCabe has totaled five points in nine appearances this campaign after generating four points on two goals in 18 matches for the 2008 season.

 

Findlay Oilers (4-4, 3-2 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay women’s soccer team lost 1-0 on Friday, September 25 to 4th ranked Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. The loss gives the Oilers a 3-4 record on the season with a 2-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lakers scored just 44 seconds into the contest and then played solid defense the rest of the way as Alicia Tutino took the loss in goal for the Oilers. The University of Findlay women’s soccer team defeated Ferris State University 3-1 on Sunday, September 27 in Big Rapids, Michigan. The victory gives the Oilers a 4-4 record on the season with a 3-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Alicia Tutino picked up the win and made 12 saves in the net for Findlay. The Oilers will be back in action again on October 2 when they host Northern Michigan University at 2:00 p.m.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (9-0-1, 5-0 GLIAC)

The Lakers held onto the No. 4 rank in the NSCAA poll with wins over Indianapolis (4-1), Findlay (1-0), and Tiffin (7-0). GVSU is still undefeated with a record of 9-0-1, 5-0 GLIAC. Grand Valley State has now won 32 straight conference matches, dating back to the 2006 season. In the win over No. 25 Indianapolis freshman Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wis.) scored two goals, while junior Kristen Eible (DeWitt, Mich.) and freshman Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) added one. Eible added the game-winning goal off of a Botts assist in the win over Findlay. Six different players scored for the Lakers in the shutout win over Tiffin. Junior Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.) led the way with two goals, freshman Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist, while senior defender Natalja Stanski scored her first goal of the season off of a penalty kick. Keeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) recorded her sixth shutout and recorded four saves over the weekend.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (5-4, 3-2 GLIAC)

The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team split its two matches over the weekend. NMU lost to Saginaw Valley State and defeated Northwood. This week the Wildcats are on the road to face Findlay and Tiffin. Dana Stephens scored two of the Wildcats three goals against the Timberwolves, it was the second Sunday in a row in which she scored two goals. Stephens currently leads the team with five goals. Joanna Kiilunen scored the other goal against Northwood for her second of the season. NMU has won two of its past three games.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (4-4-1, 1-3-1 GLIAC)

Northwood went 1-1 on the week, defeating Ashland 4-1 before dropping a tight 3-2 contest at Northern Michigan. The Timberwolves are now 4-4-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the GLIAC. The win was significant for the Timberwolves for a number of reasons - it was NU’s first GLIAC victory since October 23, 2004, a span of 37 matches. Northwood had gone 0-35-2 in its last 37 GLIAC contests. It was also the first time in program history NU had defeated Ashland - Northwood entered the game with a 0-14-1 record against the Eagles all-time. The Timbewolves netted six goals in two matches last week - last year, Northwood scored five goals the entire GLIAC schedule. So far, the Timberwolves have netted 11 goals in GLIAC play. NU will host Grand Valley State Friday and Ferris State Sunday.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (7-1-1, 4-0-1 GLIAC)

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team recorded and important 1-0 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Northern Michigan (Sept. 25). After a scoreless first half, Renee Privette found the back of the net off of a Tiffany Bell assist to give the Cardinals the only goal of the game in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Anne Berschbach picked up her third straight shutout, increasing her scoreless streak to 373 minutes this season as she stopped all eight Wildcat shots. The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team defeated Ashland 4-0 (Sept. 27) in a GLIAC match-up. The shutout was the team’s sixth of the season and Berschbach increases her scoreless streak to 463 minutes. With the win the Cardinals’ improve to 7-1-1 overall on the season and 4-0-1 in the GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-6-1 overall on the season and 0-4 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley returns to play on Friday (Oct. 2) when they host Ferris State at 4:00pm.

 

 

Tiffin Dragons (1-3-2, 1-2-2 GLIAC)

Tiffin University picked up its first win of 2009, beating Ferris State 6-1. TU scored three goals in a five minute span in the first half, with Emily Goldsberry tallying two of the goals. Alexandra Sevastakis also scored two goals in the game, while Satu Hermunen and Jenna Hornyak also picked up goals. Lauren Turkington, Shelly Rogers, and Danielle Eaken all had two assists apiece. Lindsay Gallagher got the win in goal, making 7 saves over 90 minutes while allowing a goal. TU outshot Ferris State 17-10…The Dragons struggled through a tough game at Grand Valley State. The Dragons were outshot 30-4 en route to a 7-0 loss. Emily Demorest took the loss in goal, making 10 saves while allowing 7 goals over 90 minutes. Tiffin managed just one shot on goal during the game.
