Northwood's Amanda Watson Named GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University sophomore forward Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio,/Clay) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after recording four goals and three assists over the weekend.

Amanda Watson finished the week with four goals and three assists for 11 points in a pair of GLIAC matches last week.  In Northwood’s 7-0 victory over Findlay Friday, Watson finished with four goals and a pair of assists. She then assisted on NU’s lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Tiffin.  On the season, Watson leads the GLIAC in goals (14) while ranking second in assists (6).  She currently has nine more points than any other player in the GLIAC (34-25).

-----GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Notes-----

Ashland Eagles (3-8-3, 0-7-2 GLIAC)

For the second consecutive week, AU went 0-1-1. Ashland is 3-8-3 overall on the season and 0-7-2 in the GLIAC. The Eagles played at Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 9). The two teams played to a 1-1 tie. Senior Kelly Usher tied up the contest in the 74th minute. It marked Usher’s third goal of the season and 25th goal of her career. It moved her into a tie for seventh place on AU’s career goals list. Senior goalkeeper Krista Herbst made 12 saves in the draw. It moved Herbst to the top of AU’s career saves list. In her career, Herbst has 225 saves. Robyn Lymangrover (1995-96) held the record previously with 207. AU lost at Grand Valley on Sunday (Oct. 11), 5-0. Ashland hosts Northwood and Saginaw Valley State this weekend.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (1-10-2, 1-7-1 GLIAC)

Sophomore forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) produced her team-leading eighth goal of the season with the Bulldogs’ lone score in Friday’s (10/9) double-overtime tie against Ashland. Borgman has registered a team-leading 16 points this season in 13 contests. She has presently tallied at least a goal in six matches this fall... Freshman midfielder Hillary Procunier (Davison/Flint Kearsley) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on Ferris State’s lone goal in Friday’s (10/9) conference home match versus Ashland. Procunier played a season-high 53 minutes in the contest... The Bulldogs participated in their second double-overtime match of this season last Friday (10/9) against Ashland which resulted in a 1-1 deadlock. FSU played to a 2-2 tie versus Lewis (9/1) in its initial double-overtime outing of the 2009 campaign.

 

Findlay Oilers (4-6-2, 3-4-2 GLIAC)

The Oilers lost twice on the road last week, falling 7-0 to Northwood and 2-0 to Saginaw Valley State…On the season, freshman Emily Beddoes leads the team with 12 points…She has scored five goals and picked up two assists…Freshman Megan Gallaway and junior Sara Jones have each tallied three goals as well.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (12-0-2, 8-0-1 GLIAC)

The #4 Lakers advanced their record to 12-0-2, 8-0-1 GLIAC and improved their unbeaten streak to 54 regular season games and 34 unbeaten conference matches over the weekend with wins over Northern Michigan (4-1) and Ashland (5-0) …In the win over NMU, junior Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.) recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist…Seniors Irie Dennis (New Albany, Ohio) and Katie Johnson (Petoskey, Mich.) and freshman Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) notched a goal in the win over the Wildcats…In the shutout win over AU, freshman Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wis.) recorded two goals and an assist, while Dingledine notched a goal and an assist…Freshman Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) recorded a goal, her seventh goal of the year and sophomore Erin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) added a goal and an assist, her team-best ninth assist of the year…GVSU’s defense didn’t allow a shot from Ashland for the entire 90 minutes of play and outshot opponents 69-8 over the weekend, with a 43-5 advantage in shots on goal.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (6-6-1, 4-4-1 GLIAC)

NMU split at home last week as the Wildcats lost to Grand Valley State Friday and defeated Ferris State Sunday…The eight goals scored against Ferris State was the most in a game since scoring 14 against Finlandia during the 2007 season…Five different ‘Cats scored against the Bulldogs, Dana Stephens, Amelia Johnson and Kari Buckel scored twice while Ashley DeKeyser and Emily Lockery added solo goals…Kara Music and Jessica Baker combined for the third shutout of the season…Stephens leads the team with eight goals…This week the ‘Cats are off to Saginaw Valley State and Northwood.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (6-6-1, 3-5-1 GLIAC)

Northwood went 1-1 last week, defeating Findlay 7-0 before falling in overtime to Tiffin 2-1 … the Timberwolves are now 6-6-1 overall, 3-5-1 in the GLIAC … Northwood is currently in sixth place in the conference … NU was led for the week once again by Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), who had four goals and three assists for 11 points … against Findlay, Watson finished with four goals and a pair of assists … she then assisted on Northwood’s lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Tiffin … Northwood will travel to Ashland Friday before playing their home finale against Northern Michigan Sunday.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (10-1-2, 7-0-2 GLIAC)

SVSU defeated Tiffin University (Oct. 9), 3-1, in a GLIAC match-up. The Cardinals would get on the board first when freshman Lara English netted her first career goal at the 24 minute mark. Saginaw Valley would go up 2-0 when sophomore Samantha Echols found the back of the net off a pass from junior Amanda Kady. Tiffin would cut the lead to 2-1 in the 61st minute of the contest, before SVSU would answer with an insurance goal off the foot senior Jaclyn Barrett for her eighth goal of the season... SVSU extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games (Oct. 11) when it defeated the University of Findlay, 2-0, in a GLIAC match-up. The Cardinals got on the board in the 13th minute when freshman Abby Bellamy netted a goal off a pass from sophomore Echols. Saginaw Valley would go ahead 2-0 when senior Barrett found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore goalie Anne Berschbach. Berschbach held the opposition scoreless, making three saves and recording her sixth shutout of the season for the Cardinals.SVSU improves to 10-1-2 overall on the season, and 7-0-2 in the GLIAC.

 

Tiffin Dragons (4-4-2, 4-3-2 GLIAC)

The Dragons gave up two first half goals and could not make up the difference, falling at Saginaw Valley State in a key GLIAC matchup 3-1. Down 2-0 at halftime, TU’s Kirsten White scored in the 62nd minute off a pass from Felicia Ruiz to cut the deficit to one goal. But TU would get no closer, as the Cardinals put the game away with an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Emily Demorest played in goal, making 7 saves while allowing all three goals in 90 minutes. TU was outshot 14-12….The Dragons pulled out a win in overtime, beating Northwood 2-1 in the 97th minute off a goal by Felicia Ruiz off a shot from 13 yards out on the right side off a cross from Ashley Davis. TU opened the scoring in the 66th minute on a header from Kirsten White off a Danielle Eaken free kick. Northwood equalized in the 72nd minute to send the game to overtime. Lindsey Gallagher got the win in goal, making 4 saves in 97 minutes.
