Tiffin and Grand Valley State to Meet in 2010 GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Title Match

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The top two seeds in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) wommen's soccer tournament will meet in the championship match on Sunday at the  GVSU Soccer Field.  Top-seeded Grand Valley State University and No. 2 Tiffin University each survived semifinal tests on Friday (Nov. 5).

Tiffin University advanced to the GLIAC Championship Sunday at 1 pm with a solid 2-0 victory over Northern Michigan in the Semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament held at Grand Valley State University.

 

The Dragons held a healthy shot advantage in the game, outshooting the Wildcats 15-4, including 10-3 in the second half. Tiffin also kept up the pressure with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

 

Ashley Davis got TU on the board in the 14th minute, taking a pass up the middle from Michelle Rogers and knocking it home from 12 yards out to give TU a 1-0 halftime lead.

 

Both teams battled back and forth in the second half, but the Dragons put the game away in the 75th minute when Lauren Bowyer took a breakaway opportunity and deposited the ball in the bottom left corner of the net for a crucial insurance goal.

 

Denise Resende got the win in goal, making 3 saves over 90 minutes for the shutout.

 

In the second semifinal match, host GVSU downed fourth-seeded University of Findlay, 4-0.

Grand Valley State defeated Findlay 4-0 on Friday afternoon (Nov. 5) in the semifinals match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament. Four Lakers recorded goals in the win and the tough GVSU backline notched its 15th shutout victory. The No. 10 Lakers advanced their record to 16-1-2 in overall play and will move on to play Tiffin in the GLIAC Championship match at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 in Allendale, Mich. Early this year Tiffin and Grand Valley State played to a 1-1 tie in Tiffin, Ohio on Oct. 22.

GVSU notched its first goal at the 23:58 mark when sophomore forward Kayla Addison recorded her team high 17th goal on the year. Addison took a shot at an open net after she had a breakaway down the middle of the filed. Findlay's goalkeeper came out of the net to block the shot, but missed. Addison knocked it in from inside the box, giving the Lakers a 1-0 led.

During the second half of action, GVSU notched three goals. The first was recorded during the 63rd minute. Junior midfielder Erin Mruz received a pass from Addison. Mruz then placed the ball in the left corner of the net, giving Grand Valley State a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Kelsey Fiscus notched her first collegiate goal in a Laker uniform after she took a shot from six yards out at the 65:10 mark. Teammate Kayla Kimble also recorded her first collegiate goal during the 85th minute. The freshman defender received the ball from Taylor Callen and then placed the ball in the upper right corner of the net, giving the Laker a 4-0 win.
Grand Valley State outshot the Oilers by a 19-4 advantage, including an 8-2 mark in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise notched her 11th shutout victory on the year and picked up two saves in the match.
