GRAND VALLEY STATE CAPTURES 2015 GLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT TITLE WITH 5-0 WIN OVER ASHLAND
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State Lakers captured their eighth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Tournament Championship on Saturday with a 5-0 victory over the Ashland Eagles. After a scoreless stalemate throughout the majority of the first half, the Lakers' Gabriella Mencotti struck in the 39th minute from Kendra Stauffer to give GVSU a 1-0 edge heading into halftime. The second half was all GVSU as the defending national champs and No. 1 team in the country recorded four, second-half goals on their way to the 5-0 title match victory. A pair of Marti Corby scores and one tally each from Samantha Riga and Hannah Phommavongsa lifted the Lakes to the title as GVSU outshots Ashland by a 35-9 margin, including 18-2 on target.
