Hillsdale Chargers

The Hillsdale College men's and women's track teams borrowed a concept from Major League Baseball's spring training "split squad" format and took a small group of athletes to Naperville, Illinois over the weekend to compete at North Central College. The result was several good performances, which improved some athletes' chances of qualifying for the national meet, coming up later this month. Competing against a wide variety of athletes and schools, the Charger women took two first places at the meet, led by senior Anna Leutheuser's winning hammer throw mark of 52.43 meters. In addition, the 4x100 relay team of Cat Humphries, Circe Cansino, Marta Scheiwe and Jazmin Williams won its race in 47.66 seconds. Another highlight for the team came on the performance of Jennifer Shaffer, who ran the second-fastest time in the 800 meter run in school history, taking second place with a time of 2:11.21. On the men's side, senior Jared Krout is leaving some serious tire tracks in his wake in the final weeks of his incredible career. He finished second in the 100 (10.82) and third in the 200 (21.61) while winning the long jump by leaping 23 feet, 1 3/4 inches. He also ran the second leg of the winning 4x100 relay team, joining teammates Will Danko, Logan Shoup and Skylar Dooley to touch the tape in 41.55 seconds. Hillsdale's dominance in the hammer throw continued, as the team took three of the top four spots, led by (in order of finish) Aaron Falk, Jason Stomps and Justin Dailey. Charles Wysong also achieved a lifetime best time in the 3000 meter steeplechase, cutting four seconds off his previous-best time, with a mark of 9:12.66. That time also improves his NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
