Hillsdale’s Vanchieri Named “Freshman of the Year,” Wayne State’s Kelley Tabbed “Coach of the Year”
BAY CITY, Mich. --
Tiffin University senior outfielder Devin Rudolph
(Pickerington, Ohio) was named the 2010 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) baseball “Player
of the Year” by the league’s head coaches in
all-conference balloting. The league’s head coaches voted
Wayne State University senior Justin Mazur (Macomb,
Mich./De LaSalle) the 2010 GLIAC baseball “Pitcher
of the Year.”
The coaches also named Hillsdale College rookie Mike
Vanchieri (Chicago, Ill./Benet Academy) the
conference’s “Freshman of the Year,” while
Ryan Kelley, head coach of Wayne State’s
baseball team, was tabbed the “Coach of the Year.”
Rudolph was named GLIAC baseball “Player of the
Year” after his record-setting 2010 season. Rudolph, the NCAA
Division II leader in batting average with a .529 mark, shattered
the GLIAC and Tiffin records for season average. His .529 average
eclipsed Tiffin’s former record by 59 points. He also led the
GLIAC in slugging percentage and on-base percentage while also
placing in the top five in hits, doubles, home runs, and
runs-batted-in. Rudolph ranks among the D-II leaders in nine
separate offensive categories, including ranking seventh in the
nation in on-base percentage. He was twice named GLIAC
“Player of the Week” this season.
Mazur, elected WSU team co-captain for 2010, has
posted a 6-1 mark this season and enters the GLIAC Tournament
as the conference leader in strikeouts (64). He ranks second
in innings pitched (72.2), tied for third in wins (6), and sixth in
ERA (4.21). Mazur has posted seven complete games and lasted
at least 6.1 innings in all 10 of his starts this season. A
2009 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, Mazur has the best
career winning percentage (18-3, .857) in school history, and ranks
sixth at WSU in career wins and ninth in strikeout/walk ratio
(2.10).
Vanchieri made a strong impact on the Charger baseball
team in his first season. He led Hillsdale in batting average,
finishing the season with a .344 mark to go along with a team-high
43 hits. He had a 12-game hitting streak during the season, and had
13 games of two or more hits for the Chargers. Vanchieri went
hitless in just nine of the team’s 43 games this season and
was one of the team’s most consistent contact hitters
throughout the 2010 campaign.
Kelley, in just his second season at the helm, guided the
Warriors to their sixth GLIAC Tournament appearance in the last
seven years, and their second regular-season championship in the
last three seasons. After leading WSU to 25 wins in 2009, the
most by any first-year head coach in program history, his squad won
29 games during the regular season in 2010, including 23 GLIAC
victories, tied for second-most in school history.
