BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University junior running back Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after leading the Warriors to a 41-27 victory over the University of Indianapolis on Saturday. Grand Valley State University senior defensive lineman Steve Gawronski (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Ashland University junior place kicker/punter Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - Senior WR Joe Horn (Waynesfield,
Ohio/Waynesfield-Goshen) became Ashland’s career leader in
touchdown receptions Saturday at Ohio Dominican when he
hauled in a 23-yard TD pass. Horn has 24 career TD
receptions. Horn had shared the record with Chris
Harkness. Over the last two games, Horn has caught 16 passes
for 237 yards (14.9 ypc.) and four touchdown
passes…sophomore QB Taylor Housewright (Ashland, Ohio) has
thrown eight touchdown passes in the last two games. He had
three TD passes at Ohio Dominican…junior slot back D.J.
McCoy has rushed for over 100 yards in six consecutive games.
That’s the longest streak of 100-yard games by an AU
player since Antwan Hart has seven in 2004…AU’s
six-game winning streak is the longest the Eagles have enjoyed
under head coach Lee Owens since a seven-game streak in
2007…junior DB Logan Kerr picked off his team-leading sixth
pass Saturday. Kerr has an interception in four consecutive
games. Kerr is the GLIAC leader in pass breakups.
Ferris State - FSU battled to the end in its
regular-season home finale versus Michigan Tech on Saturday (Nov.
6) afternoon, but came out on the short end of a 28-16 decision at
FSU’s Top Taggart Field... Ferris totaled 318 total offensive
yards, including 203 in the air as junior quarterback Tom Schneider
completed 17-of-29 balls on the afternoon. FSU also ran for
115 yards with sophomore Dwayne Williams managing a team-high 37
rushing yards on six tries... Junior receiver Mike Ryan had a
game-best eight catches for 97 yards for Ferris while senior Chris
Wilson tallied three grabs for 37 yards in his final home contest
... The Bulldogs finished only five-of-15 on third down and were
two-of-four in the red zone compared to Michigan Tech’s
seven-of-14 third down effort and four-of-six showing inside the
20-yard line... The Bulldogs were led by senior linebacker Matt
Ryan’s game-high 15 stops while junior defensive tackle
Muneer Bawayeh tallied nine tackles. FSU, which entered the
game leading the conference in sacks, got to the quarterback only
once as MTU allowed a single sack. The Huskies entered the
game leading the nation in fewest sacks allowed... FSU fell to 5-5
overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC with the setback.
Findlay - The Oilers fell 31-3 to #17 Hillsdale
College on Saturday, at Muddy Waters Stadium…Sophomore
RB Monterae Williams led the offense with 71 yards on 17 carries
while freshman RB Ray Ballard registered 26 yards on four
carries…Williams now has 1,034 rushing yards on the season,
a new career-high…Senior QB John Soli completed 12-of-21
passes for 90 yards with an interception as senior WR Dustin
Zielaskiewicz and DaJerrian Smith recorded five catches
apiece…Defensively, sophomore DL Richard Sumlin and freshman
LB Kenny Klatt led the team with nine tackles apiece.
Grand Valley State - The Lakers are 130-14 in
their last 144 games and 95-5 in its last 100 regular season
games...Including the last six games of the 2000 season, the Lakers
are 129-10...GVSU is 73-5 overall since 2005, including a 55-2 mark
in GLIACaction. ..GVSU is 53-1 in its last 54 regular season home
games, including 33 straight regular season home wins...GVSU last
regular season home loss was a 35-14 decision to Northwood in
2004...The 2010 GVSU senior class is 45-5 with three GLIAC titles,
while going 39-2 in regular season action...Grand Valley State
senior RB Justin Sherrod (Wyoming, Mich./Park) rushed for 141 yards
and two TDs on 17 carries and caught five passes for 38 yards in
Grand Valley State’s 35-21 victory over Northwood Saturday
night. Sherrod averaged 8.3 yards per carry and moved into 18th in
all-time rushing yards at Grand Valley State with 1,801 yards on
240 carries (7.5 ypc). Sherrod leads GVSU in rushing yards (819),
while ranking second in receptions (36) for 278 yards...Grand
Valley State senior defensive tackle Steve Gawronski (Toledo, Ohio)
notched career-highs in total tackles with 10 (4 solo/6 assisted),
QB sacks with two (-12) and tackles for loss (2) vs. NU.
Hillsdale - Hillsdale won on homecoming for the seventh consecutive season, defeating the Findlay, 31-3, Saturday afternoon…The Chargers are 8-1 on homecoming games under head coach Keith Otterbein… The three points allowed by Hillsdale’s defense are its fewest since shutting out Indianapolis, 23-0, on Sept. 19, 2009…Junior captain Nick Hixson had an interception for the second week in a row…Hillsdale is now 8-2 on the season and has won eight or more games in three of the past four seasons…Senior WR Andre Holmes had 9 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, and now holds the school’s career record for receiving yards, with 2,756…He broke the record of Ed House, which was set in 2001…Holmes also has 195 receptions for his career, which is tied with A.J. Kegg for the most receptions in a career in school history…He has 1,033 receiving yards this season, which is 106 shy of the single-season school record, held by Aaron Waldie and set in 2007…Senior QB Troy Weatherhead has completed 78 percent of his passes on the season, and is on track to shatter the GLIAC single-season pass completion record, held by GVSU’s Harlon Hill winner Curt Anes.
Indianapolis - Wayne State scored the first 20
points of the game in last week’s 41-27 win over UIndy
… UIndy out-scored the Warriors 27-21 in the final 31
minutes while the Hounds’ 24 first downs marked a season high
… With starter Chris Mills succumbing to injury late in the
second quarter, Greyhound QB Rob Doyle (Indianapolis, Ind.) came on
to amass 237 yards on 21-of-27 passing, including a career-high
four TDs and no interceptions … Doyle’s four passing
TDs were the most by a Greyhound since October of 2007 … SR
Alex Byrnes (Indianapolis, Ind.) garnered his fifth interception of
the season, picking off WSU quarterback Mickey Mohner on the
Warriors first play from scrimmage … UIndy had two 100-yard
receivers for the second straight week , as Mar’Quone Edmonds
(career-high 131 yards) and Ryan Forney (103 yds) surpassed
triple-digits; Forney and Brenden Williams turned the trick
last week vs. Ferris St.
Lake Erie - The Storm won its third straight with a 31-27 victory over Tiffin Saturday. It is the second straight season Lake Erie has won at least three games in a row and also the second straight year the Storm has taken a winning streak of at least three into the season finale... Kameron Alexander rushed for a school, single-game record 214 yards to lead the Lake Erie rushing attack that totaled 307 yards. It was the second time ever LEC rushed for more than 300 yards in a game... Alexander had three runs of 40 or more yards, including a school-record 53 yard scamper... Matt Krumpak made his first career start at quarterback, completing 11-of-18 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. He completed passes to nine different receivers... Cameron Bryant led the team in tackles for the fourth straight week, with a career-high tying 14. John Fioritto made a career-high 12 tackles and Dan Nebraski had seven stops and two sacks.
Michigan Tech - MTU has won three straight games to improve its record to 7-2. The Huskies finished their 2010 regular season road slate with a 3-2 record … Junior Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) entered last Saturday’s game at Ferris State as the GLIAC sacks leader and added 2.5 more to his season total. The 6-3, 240-pound defensive end’s season total now stands at 10.0—second-most in Michigan Tech history … Senior QB Steve Short (Iron Mountain, Mich./Kingsford) rushed for two TDs and passed for two more to account for all four Huskies touchdowns in a 28-16 win at Ferris State. Short has 15 passing TDs and three more rushing on the season … Sophomore Bryan LaChapelle (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) hauled in two passes including a touchdown at FSU. Four of the tight end’s 17 receptions this season have been TDs … Senior Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) tallied his eighth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 115 yards at Ferris. The running back carried the ball just 13 times before leaving the game with injury.
Northern Michigan - Saginaw Valley State
defeated NMU in the home finale Saturday in overtime…Jacob
Hicks threw his first career touchdown pass against the Cardinals
on a one-yard strike to Blake Crider in the third
quarter…John Privitelli added to his team-high rushing total
with 63 yards on 22 carries as he now has 580 yards for the season
on 151 carries…Dustin Brancheau had four receptions against
Saginaw Valley State and leads the ‘Cats with 37 for 508
yards…Brancheau has half of the receiving touchdowns on the
season as he has five of the 10…Rockne Belmonte kicked a
19-yard field goal with three seconds left in regulation to send
the game to overtime, he has converted four of his last six field
goal attempts…Daniel Catalano recorded 13 total tackles
against the Cardinals (three solo and 10 assisted), as he has 50
for the season (20 solo and 30 assisted).
Northwood - Northwood dropped a 35-21 contest at
#8 Grand Valley State Saturday night ... NU is now 4-6 overall, 4-5
in the GLIAC ... the key to the contest proved to be the first
quarter, where the Lakers out-scored the Timberwolves 21-0 ... GVSU
out-gained Northwood 220 to -8 in the opening 15 mintues ... for
the rest of the game, Northwood out-scored the Lakers 21-14 and
out-gained GVSU 392-270 ... NU’s fullbacks did the majority
of the damage for the Timberwolves, accounting for 262 yards and
three touchdowns ... senior Anthony Brandon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton)
had a career-high 172 yards and a pair of TDs, averaging 13.2 yards
per carry ... fellow fullback Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega,
Ga./Lumpkin) added 90 yards of his own and a touchdown.
Ohio Dominican - Mike Noffsinger rushed for 123 yards, cracking the 100 yard mark for the third time this season, and broke the school’s single season rushing record with 712 yards…The junior also surpassed 1,000 all-purpose yards this season (1,011)…Nate Weeks blocked a punt for a safety, giving ODU four blocked kicks this season…Vincent Vasquez made a game-high 12 tackles and now has 94 on the season, five shy of the school record (Nathan Hillerich, 99, 2005). He’s made at least 11 tackles in each of his seven starts this season... Jeremy Scott scored his first career rushing touchdowns, twice plunging into the end zone from a yard out.
Saginaw Valley State - SVSU improved to 4-6 overall on the season and 4-5 in the GLIAC with a thrilling 24-17 overtime victory over Northern Michigan this past weekend that helped snap a two game losing streak. The Cardinals defense played well all afternoon, forcing a fumble early in the game that was returned 50 yards for a touchdown by Ja’Vae Ingraham and later in the half intercepting a pass as Northern Michigan was marching to score to close out the first half. Andrew Beaver (Dearborn, Mich.) set a new single season record for catches in a season when he caught a 16 yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter. He now stands at 69 catches on the season with a game to play. For the second time this season the Cardinals did not turn the ball over, while the defense forced two turnovers.
Tiffin - TU battled throughout the game but came up just short in a narrow 31-27 loss at Lake Erie, falling to 1-9, 0-9 in the GLIAC. Jason Young led the Tiffin offense, which was outgained in total offense 485-328. Young accounted for 251 of those yards through the air on 20 of 28 passing with just 1 interception and 3 touchdowns. Trey Williams had 85 yards on 9 catches, while Jonathan Marquez also had 86 yards receiving on 5 catches. Defensively, Joseph Collard had 9 tackles, Bob Edwards had 9 tackles, A.J. Brewer had 8 tackles, and Logan Snell and Mike Virgin had 7 tackles each.
Wayne State - Wayne State tied the school record
for overall wins in a season (8) and league victories in a year (7)
... the eight-win mark had been reached just three times prior to
2010 (1975, 1976 and 2008) and the seven conference victory plateau
had been reached just once prior in 2008 ... junior running back
Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) recorded the
fifth-highest single-game all-purpose yard total in school history
with 319 (177 rushing, 17 receiving, 51 kickoff return, 74 punt
return) ... he also surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing plateau for
the season (in only nine games) with a 12-yard run on the second
play of the second quarter ... Renel has three straight 100-yard
games and five on the season... senior defensive end Daunte Akra
(Detroit, Mich./Kettering) had a sack (his 7th of the year) and two
QB hurries in the contest.
