BAY CITY, Mich. - Northern Michigan University senior guard Marc Renelique (Montreal, Quebec/Chicago State) and University of Findlay junior guard Nathan Hyde (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty Benton) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," respectively, as announced by the league office.

Senior guard Marc Renelique led Northern Michigan to a home split last week by averaging 29.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He shot 61.3 (19-of-31) percent from the field, 75.0 (12-of-16) percent from the three-point line, and 90.0 (9-of-10) percent from the free throw line. Renelique poured in a a game-high 33 points, while grabbing five rebounds in an 83-80 win over Grand Valley State on Thursday. He scored 29 points, going 6-of-7 (.857) on the arc vs. Ferris State on Saturday.

Junior guard Nathan Hyde led the Oilers to a split on the road last week by averaging 29.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He also hit 56.8 (21-of-37) percent of his field goal attempts and drained 92.3 (12-of-13) percent of his attempts from the free throw line. In the Oilers 69-65 loss to Northwood, Hyde had a team-high 25 points and then followed with a career-high 34 points in the Oilers 101-99 triple overtime win against Wayne State. Thirteen of Hyde’s points came in the extra sessions.

Ashland Eagles (12-11, 8-10 GLIAC)

The Eagles went 2-0 last week marking the first time since a five-game winning streak ended on Jan. 9, that they put together consecutive wins…in last Thursday’s win over Saginaw Valley State, the Eagles canned a season-high 11 three-point field goals and connected on a season-best 52.4 percent of their attempts beyond the arc. Entering the game, Ashland was shooting just over 29 percent from three-point range…last Saturday’s 21-point victory over Lake Superior State is AU’s largest margin of victory since Jan. 2 when the Eagles defeated Tiffin by 27 points. In that game, AU had eight players score seven or more points…junior forward Justin Garris (Ledgewood, NJ/N.J. Institute of Technology) began last week averaging 1.9 ppg. He came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points against SVSU and followed that up with nine points against LSSU. For the week, Garris averaged 13.0 ppg., shot 70.5 percent from the floor and had four steals… junior forward Kale Richardson (Carroll, OH/Bloom-Carroll) fired in five three-pointers last week and has 122 for his career. Richardson needs eight more triples to move into AU’s career Top 10.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (14-9, 12-6 GLIAC)

FSU split two league road contests in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this past week. The Bulldogs led by double-digits at Michigan Tech before the Huskies held FSU scoreless for the final 5:50 of the game in pulling out a narrow 70-67 come from behind win on Thursday (Feb. 11). FSU rebounded with a convincing 90-76 triumph over Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 13) in Marquette... FSU had five players reach double-figure scoring in the win over Northern Michigan and was led by senior guard Austin Randel’s team-high 21 points. He chipped in with 14 points at Michigan Tech and has now reached double-figure scoring six consecutive games and eight times overall in his last 10 outings this season... Junior forward Justin Keenan had an other impressive week for the Bulldogs.He tallied a team-high 20 points and helped the Bulldogs to a double-digit lead before fouling out of Thursday’s setback at Michigan Tech. Keenan then added 16 points and 11 rebounds in a double-double effort as the Bulldogs ran past Northern Michigan.

 

Findlay Oilers (17-6, 13-5 GLIAC)

Findlay split a pair of games last week, losing 69-65 at Northwood on Thursday and winning 101-99 at Wayne State on Saturday…In the loss to Northwood, junior guard Nathan Hyde led the team with 25 points while senior guard Marcus Parker chipped in 19…In the Oilers win at Wayne State, Hyde scored a career-high 34 points while Parker added 28…Junior center Jason Wehri recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds…The triple overtime game was the first the Oilers have played in since winning 106-99 at Mercyhurst during the 2003 campaign…The Oilers are 486-106 (.821) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season…In the past seven years, the Oilers are a staggering 117-2 at home for a winning percentage of .983…The Oilers have won 87 straight regular season games in Croy Gymnasium with their last home loss coming against Gannon University on February 12, 2004 in 70-68 fashion…Counting tournament play at home, the Oilers have won 49 straight games in Croy Gymnasium.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (17-6, 13-5 GLIAC)

Junior Justin Ringler (Reed City, Mich.) drained a pull-up jumper with 8:18 remaining in the second half against Michigan Tech on Saturday to give him 1,001 career points in his three-year GVSU career. He becomes the 31st player in Laker history to accomplish the feat…sophomore center Nick West (Royal Oak, Mich.) averaged 19.0 points per game last week, while scoring a career-high 23 points against Northern Michigan. He followed that with a 15-point effort at Michigan Tech on Saturday, while making a combined 22-of-29 free throws in the two games. His 13 made free throws (out of 15 attempts) on Thursday night at NMU has been surpassed just once since the 2001-02 season, when John Flynn knocked down 15-of-19 attempts at the charity stripe against Ferris State on Feb. 11, 2002…junior K’Len Morris (Grand Blanc, Mich.) drained 5-of-7 three-pointers in the two games, including a career-best four three-pointers as a Laker on Thursday night against Northern Michigan. He also scored a season-high 14 points in the game against the Wildcats.

 

Hillsdale Chargers (10-12, 10-8 GLIAC)

The Chargers completed a 2-0 weekend for the third time in the past four weeks, this time winning a pair of close games against two teams from the South Division, Wayne State and Northwood… Sophomore Brent Eaton made a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to lift the Chargers to a 68-65 win over the Warriors Thursday night…Saturday, Hillsdale avenged a buzzer-beating loss to Northwood earlier in the season with a 72-70 win over the Timberwolves, snapping a three-game losing streak to NU…The Chargers have gone 9-2 in their past 11 games, after going 1-10 in their first 11 games of the season…Sophomore forward Brad Guinane scored a season-high 21 points in Thursday’s win at WSU, while making a career-high four 3-point baskets in the game… Guinane sat out just four minutes in each game this weekend…Freshman center Nick Washburn had back-to-back double-digit scoring games for the first time in his career this weekend, picking up 14 at WSU and 10 vs. NU…The Chargers’ 9-2 run has put them solidly in second place in the GLIAC South Division.

 

Lake Superior State Lakers (12-11, 10-8 GLIAC)

LSSU lost 89-83 at Tiffin and 83-64 at Ashland to get swept on the road for the second straight time and suffer its fifth loss in six games. The Lakers, who went into the week ranked seventh in the Midwest Region, allowed their opponents to shoot 53 percent from the field (53-100). LSSU’s leading scorer for the week was senior guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio), who averaged 20.5 points per game. Perkins is ranked fifth in the GLIAC in scoring at 17.2 ppg…LSSU plays its final regular-season home games this week against North Division rivals Grand Valley State and Ferris State. The Lakers hope to avenge a nine-point loss to GVSU…LSSU will pay tribute to seniors Perkins, Garrett Konuszewski (Flushing, Mich.) and Jeremy Beasley (Detroit, Mich.) on Saturday.

 

Michigan Tech Huskies (8-15, 7-11 GLIAC)

Michigan Tech defeated the top two teams in the GLIAC North Division in Ferris State and Grand Valley State last week to extend its winning streak to four games—currently the longest in the league. The four consecutive wins are the most by the Huskies since they put together a nine-game streak during the 2005-06 season … Tech trailed by 14 with seven minutes remaining last Thursday (Feb. 11) vs. Ferris State before coming back to win 70-67. The Huskies hadn’t overcome that large of a deficit in the second half since March 13, 2004, in an 81-75 NCAA Regional quarterfinal vs. Gannon (also a 14-point hole with seven minutes to play) … Sophomore Mike Hojnacki (Milwaukee, Wis./Eisenhower) posted his second straight 20-point game vs. Ferris State by making 8-of-13 field goals. He also had eight rebounds to finish off a three-game stretch where he averaged 20.0 points and 7.3 boards … MTU has picked up its defense during its current four-game win streak. Opponents are scoring just 55.5 points and shooting 35.6 percent from the field.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (10-12, 7-11 GLIAC)

The Wildcats take to the road for their final road trip of the regular season with stops in Hillsdale and Findlay this week…Last week tNMU swept the season series against Grand Valley State with a 83-80 win over the Lakers in Marquette… Marc Renelique led the ‘Cats in the scoring column in both games with 33 and 26 points, respectively… Renelique leads the ‘Cats by averaging 17.4 ppg as Raymont McElroy is the only other ‘Cat averaging over 10 points a game as he has 16.4 ppg…Jared Benson had 12 rebounds last week as he continues to lead the team in the category by averaging 6.3 rpg…McElroy is eight assists away from 100 on the season…Benson is the lone ‘Cat with 20 or more blocks on the season as he currently has 25…Two ‘Cats have over 30 steals on the season as Warner has 36 with McElroy next at 32…Against the Lakers the ;Cats shot a season-high .588 percent from the three-point line (10-17)…NMU had eight blocked shots against Ferris State for a season-high, with Benson’s team-high four leading the way.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (11-11, 8-10 GLIAC)

Northwood went 1-1 last week, defeating Findlay 69-65 before falling at Hillsdale 72-70 … the Timberwolves are now 11-11 overall, 8-10 in the GLIAC … NU had won four straight games prior to the loss against the Chargers … Northwood snapped a nine-game losing streak to Findlay with their win over the Oilers … the Timberwolves last win over Findlay came during the 2002-03 season … Dorian Pierce (Jackson, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves for the week, averaging 17.5 points per game while shooting 88.2 percent from the foul line (15-17) … freshman Andrew VanDierenDonck (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) scored a career-high 20 points in the loss at Hillsdale Saturday … with two weeks left in the regular season, Northwood is one of three teams tied for seventh in the GLIAC standings … the Timberwolves will travel to Tiffin before hosting Ashland this week.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (14-9, 11-7 GLIAC)

Saginaw Valley is 14-9 overall this season and 11-7 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals played two times this week. They were defeated by Ashland and then traveled to Tiffin, where they were able to come back from a loss and defeat them. Senior Avery Stephenson is continuing to lead his team as he averages 17 points per game, while both Keithan Jackson and Greg Foster are averaging 13.3 and 12.9, respectively. Jackson has also pulled down a total of 227 rebounds this season for SVSU, an average of 10.3 rpg. The Cadinals are outscoring their opponents 70.4 to 67.3 this season. Saginaw Valley returns home this weekend to take-on Ferris State University on Thursday (Feb. 18) at 8:00pm and Grand Valley State University on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 7:00pm.

 

Tiffin Dragons (2-21, 1-17 GLIAC)

Tiffin University held the lead for most of the first half and continued to hold a lead during the second half, but a 12-2 run by Saginaw Valley in the second half put the Dragons behind by 10, a hole they couldn’t pull themselves out of as they fell to the visiting Cardinals 69-55. Brian Scott and DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 11 points each. Mohammed Fall finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds…Tiffin University (2-20) had one of their best offensive nights of the season, shooting 52 percent from the floor, including 58 percent in the second half, in beating Lake Superior State 89-83. Six players reached double figures as the Dragons battled back from a 48-41 halftime deficit. DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 22 points while Brian Scott had 17 points. Rafael Cuellar added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Mohammed Fall also played well in the paint for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Keenan Barlow had 12 points and 5 assists while Travis Spahr also reached double digits with 10 points.

 

Wayne State Warrior (10-12, 8-10 GLIAC)

Wayne State lost both games last week by a combined five points and have a four-game losing streak heading into the final four games of the regular season ... the four straight losses have been by a combined 12 ... WSU has seven setbacks this year by five points or less plus a double overtime defeat at Northwood (94-85) on Dec. 9 ... Saturday’s game against Findlay was the first WSU contest in 92 years of basketball to reach a third overtime ... there have been 15 double overtime games in school history ... the 99 points scored vs. the Oilers was the most by the Warriors against a league opponent since a 100-60 triumph over Michigan Tech on Jan. 4, 2001 ... WSU set season-highs in field goals made (35), field goal percentage (58.3), free throw percentage (24-26/92.3) ... junior Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) had a WSU season-best four blocked shots in the UF contest ... senior guard Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding) played 88 minutes in two games last week scoring 31 points and shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from beyond the arc.
