BAY CITY, Mich. - Lake Superior State University senior guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Northwood University junior guard Dorian Pierce (Jackson, Mich.) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week," respectively, as announced by the league office.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Scott Perkins - Lake Superior State
6-2, Senior, Guard

Lake Superior State University senior guard Scott Perkins scored 38 of the Lakers’ 65 points during Thursday’s home-opening win (65-60) over Hillsdale. His scoring total was the most by a Laker since Ben Dewar scored 42 points against Finlandia in Dec., 2002. Perkins came through with 24 points to lead LSSU to a 61-55 victory over nationally-ranked Findlay. For the week, Perkins shot 47.5 percent from the field and averaged 31 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Northwood University junior guard Dorian Pierce averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game while helping the Timberwolves to a 1-1 mark in a pair of road contests last week. He shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15-29), 40.0 percent from 3-point range (4-10) and 84.6 percent from the foul line (11-13). He led the Timberwolves in scoring with 17 points at Northern Michigan before netting 28 points in a victory over Michigan Tech.

Ashland Eagles (2-3, 0-2 GLIAC)
The Eagles opened GLIAC play last week with road games at Ferris State and Grand Valley State. Those games were the start of five consecutive road dates for AU. All of those are GLIAC games…freshman guard Micah Fraction (Upper Marlboro, MD/Montrose Christian) came to Ashland with the reputation of being able to set up his teammates. Last week, the point guard also showed his scoring touch, hitting for 15 points at Ferris State and 12 points at Grand Valley State… AU outrebounded Ferris State, 34-30, and that marked the second time this season AU has outrebounded the opposition... a year ago, guard Bylynn Hatcher (Alliance, OH/Grand Rapids C.C.) wasn’t a consistent factor on the glass. That has changed in the early part of this season. As of last week, Hatcher was second on the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg.) and at Ferris State he just missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds…AU plays one game this week – Saturday at Tiffin. A year ago, the Eagles went 2-0 against the Dragons. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 19-4.
Ferris State Bulldogs (3-3, 3-0 GLIAC)
FSU opened GLIAC action with three consecutive home victories last week inside Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs posted decisive wins in all three contests, winning by an average of 19 points per game... Ferris’ 26-point victory over GVSU last Monday (Nov. 30) was its most decisive win over the Lakers since recording a 111-79 home win on Feb. 11, 1970, and the second-largest ever. Additionally, the 41 points allowed by FSU were the fewest the Lakers have ever scored versus the Bulldogs … The 41-point total is the fewest points allowed by Ferris against any opponent since a 40-34 home win over Oakland in the 1989-90 season (2/15/90), nearly 20 years ago. It also marked only the fifth time since 1980 the Bulldogs have limited another team to 41 points or less... Ferris’ current 3-0 league start is the program’s best since winning seven-straight to open the 2005-06 campaign en route to a NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance.
Findlay Oilers (3-3, 0-2 GLIAC)
The 9th ranked Oilers dropped a pair of road games last week, losing 83-69 to Saginaw Valley State and 61-55 to Lake Superior State…Senior guard Marcus Parker led the way and averaged 15 points per game in the two contests…On the season, Parker is averaging a team-high 13.5 points per game while junior guard Nathan Hyde is clicking for 12.8…For his career, Parker has scored 1,104 points, good for 35th all-time…The back-to-back losses were the first for Findlay since the 2001-02 campaign.
Grand Valley State Lakers (4-2, 2-1 GLIAC)
The Lakers went 2-1 over the week, falling at Ferris State before defeating Tiffin and Ashland at home to end the week…junior guard/forward Justin Ringler (Reed City, Mich.) averaged 13.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for GVSU. He recorded consecutive double-doubles against Ferris State (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Tiffin (17 points, 12 rebounds). He scored in double-figures for the first five games of the season…junior forward Toreau Brown (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) averaged 12.7 points per game on 53.6 percent shooting for the week. He scored a game-high and career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting against Ashland on Saturday afternoon… sophomore guard Alvin Storrs (Northville, Mich.) averaged 8.7 points per game and totaled a career-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the win over Ashland…the Lakers outrebounded their opponents in the three games by nearly 10 rebounds (38.3 to 28.7) per contest.
Hillsdale Chargers (1-5, 1-1 GLIAC)
The Hillsdale College men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday at Saginaw Valley State, defeating the Cardinals 84-76…SVSU was coming off an upset over No. 9 Findlay on Thursday… Hillsdale has defeated Saginaw Valley State seven times in a row, dating back to the 2006-07 season…Sophomore Brent Eaton led the team with 37 total points during the weekend and has scored in double figures in five straight games…The 84 points scored Saturday by the Chargers were the second-most in a game this season…In the win, Hillsdale also set season-highs for field goal percentage (.592), 3-point field goal percentage (.667), free throws made (16), and free throw attempts (25)…Sophomore Tyler Gerber tied a season-high with 19 points vs. SVSU…After playing their first six straight games of this season on the road, Hillsdale will finally make its 2009-10 home debut Saturday against Ferris State University.
Lake Superior State Lakers (3-3, 2-0 GLIAC)
Senior guard Scott Perkins (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored 38 of the Lakers’ 65 points during Thursday’s home opener against Hillsdale. His scoring total was the most by a Laker since Ben Dewar scored 42 points against Finlandia in December, 2002. Perkins also came through with 24 points to lead LSSU to a 61-55 victory over Findlay. For the week, Perkins shot 47.5 percent from the field and averaged 31 points per game. Against the Chargers, he set career highs for points, field goals made and free throws made, and tied his high for three-point field goals…Perkins is averaging 21.2 ppg for the season to lead the GLIAC in scoring…The Lakers improved to 2-13 all-time against the Oilers. Their other victory over UF was Jan. 12, 2002... The LSSU student section and many fans paid tribute to legendary coach and director of athletics Ronald “Bud” Cooper last week by wearing “Coop’s Corner” t-shirts at the games. Cooper died Nov. 29 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Michigan Tech. Huskies (1-6, 0-2 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech ranks second in the GLIAC in field goal percentage at 47.1 and third in 3-point percentage at 39.4 … Junior Don Fowler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) is fourth in the GLIAC in 3-point percentage at 57.1. At 7.7 points per game, he is the only upper classman among Tech’s top eight in scoring … Sophomore Mike Hojnacki (Milwaukee, Wis./Eisenhower) scored in double figures both games last week to improve his season average to 13.1. The 6-7 forward is shooting 48.6 percent from the floor including a solid 40.5 percent from 3-point range … True freshman Ali Haidar (Windsor, Ont./Forster) leads the Huskies in rebounding at 5.4 per game.
Northern Michigan Wildcats (3-2, 1-1 GLIAC)
The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team went 2-1 last week…NMU recorded a non-conference win against Finlandia (90-77) and a win in its first GLIAC game against Northwood (75-58) before dropping the game against Wayne State (60-67)…This week the Wildcats face Michigan Tech Saturday night in its lone game of the week…NMU had a double-double in all three games last week, Jared Benson had 12 points and 10 rebounds against Finlandia, Raymont McElroy registered 15 points and 10 assists against Northwood and newcomer Mylan Murphy had 12 points and 12 rebounds against Wayne State…Four of the five starters were in double-figures against Northwood, Chris Warner (18), Marc Renelique (15), McElroy (15) and Benson (11)… Two ‘Cats are averaging over 10 points a game with McElroy leading the way with 16.6 ppg and Renelique 14.2 ppg…Murphy is pulling down a team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game.
Northwood Timberwolves (3-1, 1-1 GLIAC)
Northwood went 1-1 last week, falling at Northern Michigan before defeating Michigan Tech … the Timberwolves are now 3-1 overall on the season … junior guard Dorian Pierce (Jackson, Mich.) led the way for Northwood, averaging 22.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game … he led the Timberwolves in scoring in both games, finishing with 17 at NMU before netting 28 at Michigan Tech … Lionel Sullivan (Detroit, Mich./DePorres) also played well for the Timberwolves last week, averaging 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game … in their victory over Michigan Tech, Northwood out-rebounded the Huskies 40-25, which allowed them to finish with a 13-3 advantage in second chance points … NU will host Wayne State Wednesday night.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (4-2, 1-1 GLIAC)
The Cardinals won one of three games last week, an 83-69 upset victory over #9 Findlay. Junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Godwin Heights) continued his hot play, averaging 20.3 points and 15.7 rebounds per game. He now has five straight double-doubles for this season, and has pulled down 13 or more rebounds in five straight games... SVSU is averaging 75.7 points per game, while allowing opponents 67.0 points per game, and holding opponents to a .425 shooting percentage... 14 different Cardinals have seen game action this season, and all but one has scored a point in a game... SVSU will make it first road trip of the season it travels to Lake Superior State University on Saturday for a 3:00 pm tip.
Tiffin Dragons (1-4, 0-2 GLIAC)
DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 16 points and 6 rebounds in the loss to Grand Valley State, while Rafael Cuellar had 7 points and 9 rebounds and Keenan Barlow had 6 points with 9 rebounds. Poor shooting eventually cost the Dragons, as they hit just 29 percent from the floor…Keenan Barlow led the Dragons with 20 points and 5 rebounds in the loss to Ferris State, while DeAngelo Jordan had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Mohammed Fall was solid inside for 10 points and 5 rebounds while Rafael Cuellar had 6 points and 5 rebounds.
Wayne State Warrior (4-1, 2-0 GLIAC)
After winning four of the final five games last season, Wayne State is 4-1 this year after a pair of wins on the road last week ... the 4-1 start marks the second time in three years, WSU has had a strong start (the 2007-08 squad started 7-1) ... the Warriors rallied from a halftime deficit in both games last week (10 at Michigan Tech, 5 at Northern Michigan) ... a key to the road wins was foul shooting ... Wayne State made 30-of-38 (78.9 precent) last week (Bryan Wright led the way by making 12-of-12) ... senior forward Bryan Edwards (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) scored 21 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had four assists, three blocks and two steals in the two games last week ... senior guard Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding) tallied 30 points (12 at MTU, 18 at NMU) last week ... WSU concludes its four-game road trip with a pair of away contests this week ... the Warriors visit Northwood on Wednesday and Lewis on Saturday for its final non-league game of the regular season.
