Former Storm graduate assistant tabbed to lead Storm as sixth head coach in program history
PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College Director of Athletics Griz Zimmermann announced Monday (Jan. 10) that Davie Carmichael has been named head coach of the men’s soccer program after serving the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant coach with the Storm.
Carmichael is the sixth coach in the program’s history.
“Davie has learned a lot and grown as a coach in his two years here at Lake Erie and we are looking forward to the future of Storm men’s soccer,” Zimmermann said. “Members of the team, the athletic department and the search committee were impressed with him during the search process. We are very confident in his abilities to work with and motivate our student-athletes on and off the field and work hard to move our program forward.”
Since arriving on campus, Carmichael has been heavily involved in the planning and implementation of training and practice schedules, game-day coaching, recruiting and administrative duties within the men’s soccer program as it transitioned from a Division III program to Division II and into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He also has served as a head coach with the Mentor Soccer Club since 2009.
“I’m very excited and thankful for the opportunity to be the head coach here at Lake Erie College,” Carmichael said. “I want to create an environment for success both on and off the field of play and a foundation that will see continual growth and development of the Storm soccer program and bring us one step closer to a GLIAC title.”
A native of Scotland, Carmichael earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Notre Dame College where he competed for the nationally-ranked NAIA Falcons for two seasons before earning his degree in 2007. There he helped Notre Dame to two regular season conference titles and two NAIA national tournament appearances.
After graduating, Carmichael went on to combine his knowledge of the sport with his playing and coaching experience as an international sports consultant for Firstpoint USA Sports Scholarship Consultants. While at Firstpoint, his primary responsibility was finding opportunities for student-athletes throughout the United Kingdom to further their academic and soccer futures at colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Prior to Notre Dame, Carmichael was a standout at NCAA Division I Cleveland State University and is no stranger to Division II or the GLIAC, having competed at Northwood University. At Northwood, he earned All-GLIAC and All-Region first-team honors in 2004.
“'My goals are to recruit and develop a squad and program that plays simple, intelligent and well dressed soccer,” said Carmichael. “The GLIAC is a very fast paced and physical conference and transitional play is crucial. Controlling the tempo of the game in the GLIAC is imperative to success and something we will continually work on improving. The tactical aspects of the game- how to press, when to press, possession, formation and positional play - are all key components to controlling the tempo of the game and will set a platform for us to play attractive soccer.”
Carmichael spent time as a coach with Glascow Celtic Football Club in his homeland and directed team and individual camps with HandsOnSoccer.
He is a former professional soccer player with Greenock Morton Football Club in Scotland and member of the U18 Scottish National squad where he earned three International caps as captain and scored a goal against Northern Ireland.
