Grand Valley State's Alex Switzer Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete Of The Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University men's tennis player Alex Switzer (Trenton, Mich.) has been named the GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Senior Alex Switzer helped the Lakers maintain a perfect GLIAC record with an undefeated week. Alex played at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in GVSU's matches against Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. At second doubles, Switzer teamed with Matt Globerson to defeat Lake Superior State, 8-6, and Michigan Tech, 8-5. In his singles matches, he defeated Craig Bass of Lake Superior in three sets and Tech's Tim Viola in straight sets.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's tennis team remained unbeaten in GLIAC action with a pair of road wins this past weekend (March 28-29) as the Bulldogs topped both Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State in league play...FSU had to rally from a 2-1 deficit after the doubles round in both matches to pick up the victory. Ferris improved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC with the two wins...The Bulldogs are currently ranked fourth in the latest Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Midwest Regional Rankings...Ferris is 72-49 (.595) overall to date this year in singles competition along with 32-25 (.561) in doubles action. FSU is an impressive 20-4 (.833) in league singles matches to date...The Bulldogs will continue their four-match league road swing by visiting Wayne State on Thursday, April 2, with match time set for 12 p.m. (EDT) in Detroit, Mich. Ferris then wraps up the conference road stretch by taking on archrival Northwood Tuesday, April 7, in a 2 p.m. (EDT) GLIAC match at Midland, Mich.

Findlay - The University of Findlay men's tennis team fell 6-3 to Wayne State University on Sunday, March 29 at the Armstrong Complex in Findlay, Ohio. The loss gives the Oilers a 6-6 record on the season with a 0-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Travis Whipple was the only Oiler to win a singles match at No. 2 singles. Kyle Collette and Jitrat Jaidee won their #1 doubles match while Whipple and Steven Fox rounded-out the Findlay victories at No. 2 doubles.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State picked up conference wins over Lake Superior State (7-2) and Michigan Tech (9-0) to maintain a perfect 4-0 GLIAC record...The Lakers also downed Hope College (5-4), making their overall record 13-5...GVSU has won seven consecutive matches, dating back to March 15...Philipp Claus, Michael Coupek and Alex Switzer have all won seven consecutive singles matches...The duo of Switzer and Matt Globerson has won seven consecutive doubles points...The Lakers are 119-63 (.654) in singles play this season and have compiled a 61-30 (.670) mark in doubles play.

Lake Superior State - Sophomore Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) was the only winner in singles against Grand Valley with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) lost in a tie breaker against Grand Valley. Freshmen Razyan Mag (Windsor, Ont.) won his singles in a tie breaker against Ferris State with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 7-2. Freshmen Razyan Mag (Windsor, Ont.) and Sophomore Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont) and Sophomore Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) and Sophomore Robert Nelson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) won their doubles against Ferris 8-6.

Michigan Tech - Ferris State defeated Michigan Tech 6-3 at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies led 2-1 after doubles but couldn't hold on through singles. Tech's top two doubles teams both won. Brett Girard and Douglas Yossida combined for an 8-4 win at No. 1, while teammates Brandon Ellefson and Anders Sandholm paired for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2. Ferris State swept the top four spots in singles to claim the team victory. The Huskies' lone winner in singles was Tim Viola at No. 5. He came back from down a set to win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) in a super tiebreaker...The Michigan Tech men's tennis team was then defeated 9-0 by Grand Valley State at the Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies record fell to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In singles, GVSU's Tony Dang bested Brett Girard 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Tech's Brandon Ellefson nearly forced a third set at No. 4 before falling 6-3, 7-6 (3)...Michigan Tech will resume play with a Friday (April 3) match at Tiffin.

Northwood - The No. 13 Northwood University men's tennis team improved to 8-1 on the season with a 9-0 victory over Tiffin Wednesday afternoon (March 25). The Timberwolves improved to 3-0 in the GLIAC with the victory. Northwood opened the match by dropping a total of six games in three doubles matches. NU then dominated the singles, allowing the Dragons to win a total of six games in 12 sets played. For the season, Northwood has now gone 45-9 in singles and 23-4 in doubles. Northwood will return to action April 4 when they travel to Indianapolis. The match will get under way at 4 p.m.

Tiffin - The Dragons could not pick up a point against Wayne State, falling 9-0 to the Warriors. Andres Torres fell in the day's closest match, falling at second singles 1-6, 6-4, 1-10, while Harry Smith lost at first singles 6-7, 2-6. Bryan Heisler lost 4-6, 4-6, and Matt Weiss lost 5-7, 1-6. The closest doubles match was at second doubles, where Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky lost 3-8...The Dragons fell to Northwood 9-0, with Harry Smith falling at first singles 4-6, 0-6. TU won just two other games in five singles matches. The closest doubles match was at second doubles, where Ryan Toporowsky/Bryan Heisler fell 3-8...The Dragons got a win from Harry Smith at first singles 6-4, 6-1 but could not manage another win, falling at Mount Union 8-1. Bryan Heisler/Ryan Toporowsky had the next closest match at second doubles, falling 4-8, while Smith/Andres Torres lost 3-8 at first doubles.

Wayne State - The Wayne State men's tennis team recorded two victories last weekend to give them a 5-6 overall record and 4-0 record in the GLIAC. WSU won 9-0 on March 28 against Tiffin in Tiffin, Ohio. The Warriors went on to defeat Findlay 6-3 on March 29 in Findlay, Ohio. WSU won all but one singles flight that went to a tie-breaker. Junior Michael Savalle and Sophomore Eric Szydlowski also won their doubles flight. Wayne State will host Ferris State on Thursday, April 2 at noon.
