Northwood's Peter Kazianschuetz Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

Bay City, Mich -- Northwood University men's tennis player Peter Kazianschuetz (Gnas, Austria) has been named the GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Peter Kazianschuetz posted a combined 4-0 record, leading Northwood to wins over a pair of teams that were unbeaten in GLIAC play (Ferris State, Grand Valley State). Kazianschuetz went 2-0 at number 1 singles and 2-0 at number one doubles with partner Frederic Scholzel. Overall for the season, Kazianschuetz is a combined 21-4 on the season, which includes a 9-0 mark in GLIAC play.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad saw its five-match winning streak come to an end last Tuesday (April 7) as the Bulldogs suffered their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) loss with an 8-1 setback at archrival Northwood in Midland, Mich. The nationally 12th-ranked Timberwolves used strong doubles play to take control of the match, winning at all three positions to go up 3-0 heading into singles. Northwood then posted a pair of quick straight set victories at four and five singles to clinch the win. All four of the other singles matches went three sets, with the Timberwolves earning three wins...The Bulldogs rebounded to defeat Grand Valley State, 5-4, on Tuesday, April 14. FSU won four of the six singles matches and one doubles match to seal the victory...Ferris now heads into this weekend's GLIAC Tournament, which will be held at the Midland Community Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday (April 18-19). The official pairings for the league tournament will be announced later this week.  

Findlay - The University of Findlay men's tennis team defeated Tiffin University 6-3 on Wednesday, April 8 in Findlay, Ohio...The Oilers then defeated Defiance College by a score of 6-3 on Friday, April 10 in Findlay, Ohio to run their record to 8-8 on the season. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 17 in Midland, Michigan against Northwood University. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.  

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State has a record of 29-13 (.690) in the GLIAC, led by senior Alex Switzer (Trenton, Mich.) and sophomore Philipp Claus (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who have both posted a 6-1 mark in conference play...Freshman Michael Coupek (Stuttgard, Germany) is 14-2 overall in dual play and has posted a 9-1 record in his last 10 matches...In the GLIAC, GVSU has posted a 20-4 (.833) mark, led by Switzer and junior Matt Globerson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) who are a perfect 6-0...The two are 16-4 overall in dual doubles play and have posted a 9-1 record in their last 10. 

Lake Superior State - LSSU swept Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles during last Friday's regular-season ending 6-3 loss to Michigan Tech...In singles play against GLIAC opponents, freshman Razvan Mag (Windsor, Ont.) is ranked third in the league at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) is second at No. 3 and senior Craig Baas (Cadillac, Mich.) is ranked second at No. 5...Mag and sophomore Pawel Wegrzyn (Mississauga, Ont.) are ranked second at No. 1 doubles against GLIAC competition. 

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech wrapped up its 2009 regular season with a 7-8 slate after three straight wins to close it out...Sophomore Chris Velhurst owns a team-best 12-5 singles record, with a majority of those wins coming at No. 5 singles...Senior Alan Parenteau has the team's highest singles winning percentage at 87.5 with a 7-1 slate...Tech swept the doubles points in each of its last three matches and did it five times on the season. 

Northwood - The No. 12 Northwood University men's tennis team improved to 12-1 overall with an 8-1 victory over Grand Valley State Friday afternoon (April 10)...NU also posted a 9-0 home sweep over Wayne State Tuesday afternoon (April 14). Northwood improved to 13-1 overall, 6-0 in the GLIAC with the wins. The Timberwolves will round out the regular season with a match against Findlay Friday afternoon (April 17). That match gets under way at 3 p.m.  

Tiffin - The Dragons picked up a pair of singles victories but ultimately fell to Findlay on the road 6-3. Matt Weiss won at fifth singles 6-0, 6-3 while Bryan Heisler won at sixth singles 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. Ryan Toporowsky also lost a close third singles match 1-6, 6-3, 5-7. TU's other win came from third doubles where Heisler/Preston Torbert won 8-5. Harry Smith/Andres Torres lost at first singles 6-8...The Dragons got a singles win from Ryan Toporowsky 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-4, but couldn't pick up enough wins elsewhere as Ohio Dominican won 7-2. Harry Smith/Andres Torres were the other winners for TU, winning 8-2. Smith also lost a close singles match 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, while Torres also fell 4-6, 4-6. 

Wayne State - The Wayne State University men's tennis team was defeated twice last weekend in Detroit and once at Northwood. WSU fell to Aquinas 6-3 in a non-conference match on Friday, April 10 and Grand Valley State on Saturday, April 11 with a score of 7-2. Wayne State also fell to the Timberwolves, 9-0. The Warriors record now stands at 5-10 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC. Johan Maubacq was the only Warrior to win both his singles flights over the weekend matches. WSU is also ranked 9th in the Midwest by the Campbells/ITA Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Warriors begin GLIAC tournament play on Saturday vs. Michigan Tech.
