BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University sophomore Bertand Moulin (Lyon, France) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week."

Sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France)has an overall record of 9-3 in singles play and 6-2 in doubles competition and has helped guide WSU to a 4-3 record this from the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. In dual matches for Wayne State, Moulin is 4-2 in singles play and 5-1 in doubles with partners Britton Steele and Oscar Gamarra. The remainder of Moulin’s victories came in this past fall’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Tournament where made it all the way to the finals in the singles event.

Ferris State Bulldogs (3-5, 0-0 GLIAC)
The Ferris State University men’s tennis team presently holds a 3-5 overall record this campaign with all five losses coming either against NCAA Division I competition or higher nationally-ranked Division II teams. The Bulldogs are presently listed 44th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Rankings along with fourth in the Midwest Region. Senior Ahmet Demir is the region’s 14th-ranked singles player while the tandem of Justin Hermes and Jack Swan is ninth in the regional doubles listing. FSU began the season with three consecutive victories, including a 5-4 home triumph over Lewis in its first official contest (Feb. 20), which has also been the Bulldogs’ only home encounter to date this season. Ferris State opens GLIAC play with two matches this weekend at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs host Lake Superior State on Saturday (March 20) at 11 a.m. (EDT) followed by a league tilt Sunday (March 21) versus Michigan Tech at 10 a.m. (EDT).
Findlay Oilers (1-2, 0-0 GLIAC)
The Oilers went 1-2 to open the season. They lost 7-2 to Spring Arbor and 8-1 to Walsh. They picked up a 9-0 win over Lake Erie.
Grand Valley State Lakers (5-5, 0-0 GLIAC)
The Grand Valley State men’s tennis team finished with a 2-3 record on its Florida trip. GVSU is 5-5 on heading into its GLIAC opener versus Michigan Tech on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. GVSU will host Albion at 2 p.m. Saturday and Lake Superior State Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Michigan Tech Huskies (6-3, 0-0 GLIAC)
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team put together a 3-2 record during its spring trip with marquee wins vs. NCAA Division II foes Indianapolis, Le Moyne and Dallas Baptist. The Huskies suffered losses to St. Leo and Cumberland and now own a 6-3 overall record on the season.
Lake Superior State Lakers (4-5, 0-0 GLIAC)
Two Laker players were 3-4 in the weekend matches. Sergiu Laza (Toronto, Ont.) defeated Calvin College at No. 2 singles in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Laza defeated Davenport 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 2 singles.In doubles Laza and partner Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) shut down Davenport 8-0. Brandon Clayton (Windsor, Ont.) also played a three-set match, defeating Calvin College, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Clayton defeated Davenport at No. 4 singles 6-3 and 6-0. Clayton and No. 2 doubles partner Robert Nelson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) won 8-6 against Davenport.
Northwood Timberwolves (2-3, 0-0 GLIAC)
No. 12 Northwood went 2-3 over their spring trip to open the season, taking on five nationally ranked teams. NU earned a 6-3 win over No. 36 Florida Tech and a 5-4 victory over No. 16 Flagler. The Timberwolves’ losses came to No. 3 Lynn, No. 10 Rollins and No. 13 Florida Southern. Frederic Schoelzel (Gevelsberg, Germany) led the way for Northwood during the trip, going 3-1 at No. 2 singles. He posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over the nineteenth ranked player nationally, Tomas Racak of Lynn. Northwood opens GLIAC play with a match against Tiffin Saturday at 2 p.m.
Tiffin Dragons (4-4, 0-0 GLIAC)
Tiffin University got wins in two singles matches but nowhere else as Northern Kentucky beat TU 7-2. Brian Coffman won at fifth singles 6-3, 6-2 while Santiago Revelo also won at sixth singles 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7). All three doubles matches were decided by 4-8 scores. TU controlled play in a solid 7-2 win over East Stroudsburg in the first match of their spring trip in Hilton Head SC. Luiz Carvalho, Harry Smith, Andres Torres, and Brian Coffman all won straight sets singles matches, while Santiago Revelo pulled out a tough sixth singles match 7-5, 2-6, 12-10. Leonid Vladimirov lost another close singles match 6-3, 6-7, 8-10. In doubles play, Torres/Carvalho won 8-3 and Vladimirov/Smith won 8-6. TU swept the doubles matches and also picked up three singles victories in beating Malone 6-3. Brian Coffman won a tough fifth singles match 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Andres Torres (6-2, 6-3) and Leo Vladimirov (6-4, 6-2) also won. In doubles play, Luis Carvalho/Torres won 8-2, Vladimirov/Harry Smith won another close one 9-7, and Coffman/Santiago Revelo won 8-3.
Wayne State Warriors (5-3, 0-0 GLIAC)
The Wayne State men’s tennis team split a pair of matches this week in Orlando, Fla. against Birmingham-Southern and Shorter College to push the Warriors’ record to 4-3 overall. In its 7-2 win over Birmingham-Southern on March 13, WSU won all three doubles matches while also taking four of the six singles flights. However, Wayne State was unable to win back-to-back matches in Florida as Shorter College shutout WSU 9-0. So far this season the Warriors, who are currently ranked seventh in the Midwest region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), have posted three impressive in-region wins over Indianapolis (9-0), Lewis (6-3) and Bellarmine (8-1). Prior to this past week, Wayne State’s only losses had came against Division I schools Detroit (6-1) and Toledo (6-1). After nearly winning the ITA Midwest Regional tournament in the fall, sophomore Bertrand Moulin has carried his stellar play over to the spring by producing a 4-2 singles record from the first flight. Moulin has also teamed with graduate student Britton Steele and freshman Oscar Gamarra to earn a 5-1 record in doubles play.
