BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore Justin Hermes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week."

Ferris State University sophomore Justin Hermes posted a perfect 3-0 mark in both singles and doubles play last week as the Bulldogs increased their winning streak to five consecutive matches and remained unbeaten in GLIAC play. The FSU sophomore was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number four singles versus Albion (March 23) and then claimed identical 6-1, 6-1 results against both Tiffin and Findlay at the fifth spot in the lineup.

Ferris State Bulldogs (8-5, 4-0 GLIAC)
The Ferris State University men’s tennis team presently holds a 8-5 overall record and has won five consecutive matches to date. FSU’s five losses this season have come against either NCAA Division I competition or higher nationally-ranked Division II teams. The Bulldogs are presently listed 44th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Rankings along with fourth in the Midwest Region. Senior Ahmet Demir is the region’s 14th-ranked singles player while the tandem of Justin Hermes and Jack Swan is ninth in the regional doubles listing. FSU swept two conference matches in Ohio this past weekend as the Bulldogs posted a decisive 9-0 triumph at Tiffin on Friday (March 26) before beating Findlay 7-2 in Saturday’s (March 27) match. Ferris utilized seven different players in both of last weekend’s encounters.
Findlay Oilers (3-4, 0-2 GLIAC)
The University of Findlay men’s tennis team fell at home 7-2 to Ferris State University on Saturday, March 27 to give them a 3-3 record on the season. The University of Findlay men’s tennis team fell 8-1 at home to Grand Valley State University on Sunday, March 28. The loss gives the Oilers a 3-4 record on the season with a 0-2 mark in the GLIAC.
Grand Valley State Lakers (10-6, 3-1 GLIAC)
Grand Valley State went 2-0 in GLIAC action last week, claiming a 6-3 win at Tiffin and an 8-1 victory at Findlay. Philipp Claus (Cloppenburg, Germany/Grand Ledge) is 19-3 overall at No. 2 singles, while Jeff Globerson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) is 15-5 in the No. 4 singles slot...Josh Kazdan (Southfield, Mich./Groves) is also 15-5 while playing at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Michigan Tech Huskies (6-7, 0-4 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech won five of its first seven matches this season but has lost four in a row. Sophomore Luka Stupar (Belgrade, Serbia) has a 6-7 record at No. 1 singles. No. 3 singles player David Heuer (Hannover, Germany) has a team-best singles record of 6-4. Tech will play its fifth straight league road match Friday at Lake Superior State before finally playing its only two league home matches April 10-11 to wrap up its regular season.
Lake Superior State Lakers (5-8, 1-3 GLIAC)
Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) and No. 3 doubles partner Sergiu Laza (Toronto, Ont.) defeated Northwood, 9-8. Toth and Laza also defeated Wayne State, 8-2. Toth and Laza were the only doubles team to win both sets over the weekend.
Northwood Timberwolves (5-3, 3-0 GLIAC)
Northwood went 2-0 last week, defeating Lake Superior State 7-2 before downing Michigan Tech 8-1. Northwood has now won four straight to stand at 5-3 overall on the season. The Timberwolves were ranked No. 12 in the latest Wilson/ITA National Rankings … NU also features Peter Kazianschuetz, who is ranked No. 36 in singles. Kazianschuetz and Frederic Schoelzel are currently ranked as the No. 15 doubles team in the country. Against LSSU and MTU, Northwood went 11-1 in singles, all of those wins came in straight sets. The Timberwolves return to action April 6 at Grand Valley State.
Tiffin Dragons (4-9, 0-3 GLIAC)
Tiffin University dropped a couple close matches to Grand Valley State, falling 6-3 in a GLIAC matchup. Luiz Carvalho won a tough match at first singles 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 while Brian Coffman also won 6-2, 6-2. Leonid Vladimirov/Harry Smith got TU’s other victory at second doubles with a 8-0 win. The Dragons lost two close matches, however, with Santiago Revelo falling 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) while Ryan Toporowsky/Coffman fell 6-8 in doubles play. Tiffin University fell to Ferris State 9-0. The closest match came at fourth singles where Leo Vladimirov fell in a tough three-setter 2-6, 6-3, 10-12. The other singles losses were straight set defeats. In doubles play, Andres Torres/Luiz Carvalho fell in the closest match 5-8.
Wayne State Warriors (10-3, 2-0 GLIAC)
The Wayne State men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches this past week with wins over Ohio Dominican (7-2), Michigan Tech (5-4) and Lake Superior (6-3). The Warriors are now 10-3 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC play. Sophomore Bertrand Moulin and freshman Thomas Ducret were both 3-0 this week from the first and third singles flights respectively. Moulin is currently enjoying a seven-match winning streak while Ducret is undefeated in his last five singles bouts as well. WSU also received strong singles play from a pair of freshmen, Jon Groszek and Oscar Gamarra, and senior Roberto Gomez as all three won two matches. For the season, five different Warriors’ singles records are at least four games above .500. Wayne State was paced in doubles play by two wins apiece from the teams of Moulin / graduate student Britton Steele and Gamarra / senior Kevin Turnbull. WSU will look to extend its winning steak this week against Tiffin, Aquinas, and GVSU.
