GVSU's Men & Women's Track & Field Teams Lead GLIAC Outdoor T&F Championships

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men and women’s track and field teams are in the lead after Thursday’s competition at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Hillsdale College.

The men’s team recorded 47 points through seven events, while the Laker women scored a total of 83 points.

Highlighting the night was Hillsdale’s Emily Oren, who shattered the GLIAC record in the 3000 Steeplechase with a time of 10:05.05. The previous record was set in 2013 by Grand Valley State’s Hannah Osborn, who ran a 10:26.34. Tiffin’s Theo Mancheron, who won the Decathlon with 7,061 points, which also set a GLIAC record, previously set in 2013 by Saginaw Valley State’s Tyler Grob.

The GVSU women’s team placed first in all of Thursday’s field events to help give them their first place edge. Jamie Roberts captured the title in the Pole Vault with a mark of 3.73 meters. Rebecka Anderson threw 46.73 meters in the Javelin Throw to place first and Laura Schroeder finished with a mark of 58.68 meters in the Hammer Throw. Rounding out the first-place finishes and Thursday’s field events was Alexis Duncan, who jumped 5.95 meters in the Long Jump.

On the men’s side, Findlay’s Alexander Zolotoglavyy and Justin Welch took home the title in the Long Jump and Hammer Throw respectively. Zolotoglavyy hit a Division II provisional mark in the Long Jump with a leap of 7.35 meters. Welch threw 69.82 meters, which is a Division II automatically qualifier. GVSU’s Darien Thornton was second in the Hammer Throw with a heave of 67.41, while teammate Brandon Bean placed third in the High Jump with a mark of 2.11 meters.

Friday is the third and final day of the championships, with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events commencing at 12:10 p.m.
