SVSU's Derek Stone Named GLIAC Men's Cross Country "Runner of the Week"

Bay City, Mich.--Saginaw Valley's Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's cross country runner of the week as announced by the conference office.

--GLIAC Men's Cross Country Weekly Notes--

Ashland - The Eagles won the team title last weekend at the Otterbein Invitational. Ashland led a field of 21 teams with 45 points. Case Western (52) was the runnerup with Mount Union (85) third. Ashland's best finish came from sophomore Cameron Johnson (Galion, OH/Mount Gilead). His time on the 8K course was 25:14.6. Sophomore Brock Weaver (Ashland, OH) was sixth (25:13.3) and senior Jeremy Trein (Reynoldsburg, OH) was ninth (25:18.5). Ashland will be idle until the All-Ohio Championships on Oct. 10. As of last week, AU was ranked fourth in the region and 23rd in the country.

Ferris - The Ferris State University men's cross country team took part in the 36th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational held Saturday (Sept. 27) at Montrose Beach in Chicago, Ill. Senior Mike Mangieri led the men's squad by finishing 68th overall in a time of 26:25 on the 8K course. Sophomore Alex Best took 102nd place (26:56), junior Matt Jozwiak was 135th (27:28), freshman Tyler Crossman placed 136th (27:29), sophomore Derek Childs took 174th place (28:05) and junior Brian Reynolds came in 182nd (28:13). Junior Darby Davilia was 212th (28:48), freshman Ethan Earnest placed 203rd (30:46) in the 371-runner field. The Bulldogs will next compete in the Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Open Saturday, Oct. 11, in Kenosha, Wis. The meet starts at 10 a.m.

Findlay - The Oilers were idle this week and will return to action on Oct. 4 when they compete in the Louisville Open in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Grand Valley State - The Lakers were idle this week and return to competition on Oct. 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. 

Hillsdale - The Chargers were idle this week but will return to competition on Oct. 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. 

Lake Superior State - Senior Luke Allen (Manistee, Mich.) of Lake Superior State was 110th among 256 runners in the Men's Maroon II Division with a time of 28:21 at Saturday's Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. Freshman Andy Gaul (Port Huron, Mich.) placed 126th in 28:59, followed by sophomore Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.) in 127th (29:02). Freshman Sean Vardy (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) was 131st in 29:28, and freshman Michael McPherson (Ironwood, Mich.) finished 136th in 29:50. Two more Laker freshmen cracked LSSU's top seven as Joe Cantwell (Muir, Mich.) was 137th in 29:54 and Mackenzie Oglesby (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) was 141st in 30:21.

Michigan Tech - The Michigan Tech men's cross country team finished 10th with 257 points among a strong field of 22 teams at the 23rd Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota Saturday (Sept. 27).Minn. Duluth, who is ranked 17th in the nation, finished 12th with 301 points and fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference foe Lake Superior State finished 21st with 630 points. Sophomore Brian Stetter, who has been the Huskies top finisher at every meet this season, finished 20th in the eight-kilometer race in 26:23. Senior Stuart Kramer enjoyed a top-50 finish after crossing the line 42nd in 26:52. The Huskies will be idle this week before taking part in the UP Collegiate Cross Country Championships hosted by Northern Michigan on Oct. 10.

Northwood - The Northwood University Cross Country teams took part in the Lansing Invitational Friday night (September 26). The men's team took home fourth place out of 15 teams with 115 points. The men's team was once again led by Josh Jerome (Shepherd, Mich.). The senior finished second overall with a time of 26:11 in the 8K event. Derek Kraus (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) was 10th with a time of 26:51. Greg Foley (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) was 21st in the event at 27:23.The Timberwolves will travel to the Michigan Intercollegiates October 10.

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU men's cross country teams finished in tenth place in the 36th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Loyola University on Saturday (9/27/08). The Cardinal men were led by sophomore Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) who finished 23rd with an overall time of 25:36 in the 5K run. Junior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) finished in 50th place (26:11); junior Cortland Seaver followed just behind at 26:21 in 62nd place; sophomore Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) finished at 26:59, freshman Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich./Ovid-Else HS) clocked in at 27:18, while freshman Derek Welmers (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling) timed in at 27:35, senior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area HS) finished in 27:56 and freshman Patrick Klein (LeRoy, Mich./Pine River HS) rounded out the day in 28:51. The men finished the race with an overall score of 320.

Tiffin - The Dragons will return to competition at the All-Ohio Championships, Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, Oct.10. 

Wayne State - The Wayne State University Cross Country teams did not compete this past weekend. They will continue competition on Saturday October 4 at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. The women's 6k race will begin at 11:00 a.m. while the men's 8k race is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m.
