Grand Valley State Finishes Fifth at the D-II National Championship; All-Americans Announced

BAY CITY, Mich. -  Grand Valley State University finished in fifth place at the Division II Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 21 held in Evansville, Ind. Tyler Emmorey led a group of four Lakers who finished in the top-50 and their 185 points overall earned them the fifth-place finish. Adams State took home the team trophy with a score of 23 points, while Western State placed second with 86 points. Colorado Mines placed third (153) and Western Washington took home fourth (170). The individual champion was Reuben Mwei of Adams State with a time of 30:28. Saginaw Valley State also placed in the Top-20 with a team score of 428. Leading the way for the Cardinals was sophomore Nick Ekel with a time of 32:46.

Concluding the meet, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced forty student-athletes from NCAA’s Division II as recipients of the 2009 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American award. Award winners finished among the top 40. Two GLIAC athletes, Tyler Emmorey and Ross Faasse both from Grand Valley State, earned the award. Emmorey's time of 31:46 earned him an 11th-place finish. Ross Faasse finished 19th with a time of 32:11

Grand Valley State Lakers

Grand Valley State finished fifth at the NCAA Division II National Championships last Saturday (Nov. 21) in Evansville, Ind. The Lakes had four runners finish in the top-50 and recorded a score of 185 points. Tyler Emmorey (Cedar Springs, Mich.) led GVSU with an 11th place finish and a time of 31:46. Ross Faasse (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished 19th with a time of 32:11, while Anthony With (Jasonville, Ind.) placed 39th with a time of 32:49. Ryan Toth (North Liberty, Ind.) crossed the finish line 50th (33:01) and Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind.) finished 66th with a time of 33:21. Emmorey and Faasse earned All-American honors, by finishing in the top-30 of American runners.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s cross country team competed at the 2009 Division II National Cross Country Championship meet in Evansville, Ind. The Cardinals finished 20th overall and were led by sophomore Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich./Ovid-Elsie HS) who crossed the line with a time of 32:46 earning him 36th place. Following Ekel across the line were seniors Cortland Seaver (Freeland, Mich./Freeland HS), who finished 51st overall with a time of 33:01, and Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) who came in 90th overall timing in at 33:57. Following Seaver and Stone was freshman Marion Body (Sterling Heights, Mich./Cousino HS) who clocked in at 34:47. Rounding out the Cards top five was senior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) coming in with a final time of 35:03.
