Grand Valley State's Tyler Emmorey Named GLIAC Men's Cross Country  "Runner of the Year"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University sophomore Tyler Emmorey (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Runner of the Year."

Grand Valley State’s sophomore Tyler Emmorey was named the GLIAC Runner of the Year after winning the 8K race at the GLIAC Championships with a time of 24:38. He was one of six Lakers to finish in the top-10, helping GVSU earn its eighth consecutive team title with a score of 21 points. Emmorey totaled a second-place finish at the Michigan Intercollegiates in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Oct. 9 with a time of 25:09.

 

GLIAC Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year:

Milford, Mich.

Grand Valley State’s freshman Stephen Fuelling (Milford, Mich.) finished fourth overall at the 2009 GLIAC Championships in Linwood, Mich. with a time 24:54. He helped the Lakers to a first place finish with 21 points. Fuelling placed 28th at the Michigan Intercollegiates on Oct. 9 with a time of 26:14. At the Notre Dame Invitational he finished 29th with a time of 25:36 and on Sept. 5 at the Hope Vanderbilt Invitational he crossed the finish line ninth (26:31).

9th Year

Grand Valley State head coach Jerry Baltes guided the men’s cross country team to its’ eighth straight GLIAC championship. It is also the fifth consecutive year that GVSU has earned the individual title, as sophomore Tyler Emmorey was named GLIAC Runner of the Year by finishing first with a time of 24:38. The Lakers had all seven runners place in the top-13, including four among the top-five and six among the top-10.

Ashland Eagles

  Ashland finished 10th in the team standings at last week’s GLIAC championships. Freshman Colton Johnson (Mount Gilead, OH) turned in the best placement for the Eagles. He was 26th in 26:06.4 (8K). Next up for the Eagles is the NCAA regional championships Nov. 7 at Wisconsin-Parkside.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University men’s cross country team placed fifth in the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held on Saturday (Oct. 24) at the Maple Leaf Golf Course in Linwood, Mich.FSU totaled 153 points in the 11-team race. The Ferris men’s team was led by sophomore Tyler Crossman, who attained All-GLIAC Second Team kudos by finishing 12th in the field of 144 men’s runners in the 8K race with a time of 25:20.0 at the GLIAC Championships. Both Bulldog teams will next take part in the 2009 NCAA-II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Kenosha, Wis.

 

 

Findlay Oilers

The University of Findlay cross country team completed the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Saturday, October 24 in Linwood, Michigan. The men took sixth place with 175 points.Shoayb Bascal was 19th with a time of 25:45.2 while Kyle Tweed took 25th at 26:00.8. The Oilers will next compete at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on November 7 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

The Grand Valley State men’s cross country team took home a first-place finish at the GLIAC Championships on Saturday (Oct. 24) in Linwood, Mich. The Lakers had a team score of 21 points, finishing well ahead of Saginaw Valley State (53) and Hillsdale (90). GVSU totaled its eighth consecutive GLIAC title and it is the fifth year in a row that the Lakers have earned the individual title, as Tyler Emmorey (Cedar Springs, Mich.) secured a first-place finish with a time of 24:38. Ross Faasse (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed second (24:42), followed by Freshman of the Year, Stephen Fuelling (Milford, Mich.) in fourth (24:54) and Anthony Witt (Jasonville, Ind.) was right behind placing fifth (24:57). Jeff Nordquist (Kalamazoo, Mich.) finished ninth (25:13), Ryan Toth (North Liberty, Ind.) crossed the finish line in tenth (25:17) and Nathan Knisely (Coldwater, Mich.) placed 13th (25:24).

 

Hillsdale Chargers

Both the Hillsdale College men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in third place at the 2009 GLIAC Cross Country championships, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University. Britton Deuel was named Second-Team All-Conference for the Chargers on the men’s side.

 

 

Lake Superior State Lakers

Junior Lucas Pease (Bellevue, Mich.) placed 42nd to lead the Lake Superior State at the 2009 GLIAC Championships. Pease, who was 51st overall but 42nd in the team standings, finished the 8K course in 26:31.8. Freshman Jeff Kuhl (Clarkston, Mich.) was 49th in 26:53.4, and junior Sean Vardy (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) placed 59th in 27:13.7. LSSU finished 11th with 288 points. .

 

 

 

Michigan Tech. Huskies

Junior Brian Stetter claimed first-team All-GLIAC honors after he finished seventh at the GLIAC Championships hosted by Saginaw Valley State in a personal-best time of 25:05 over the eight-kilometer course. Stetter became the first Husky to earn all-conference honors since Karl Walczak in 2003. Tech finished ninth out of 11 teams. The team will enjoy a week off before racing at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Wis.-Parkside Nov. 7th.

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University men’s cross country teams competed at the GLIAC Championships Saturday afternoon (October 24). Northwood placed seventh overall, finishing the event with a total of 215 points. Leading the way for the Timberwolves was senior Derek Kraus (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa), who placed 28th overall on the 8K course with a time of 26:04.3. Sam Watson (Rochester, Mich.) was 39th with a time of 26:21.7. Northwood will compete at the NCAA Regional Championship November 7.

 

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s cross country team finished second at the 2009 GLIAC Cross Country Championships, held at Maple Leaf Golf Course in Linwood, Mich. The Cardinals had three runners finish in the top-eight, with Steve Genther leading the way in third place with a time of 24:47. Nick Ekel finished sixth with a time of 24:59 while Cortland Seaver was eighth with a time of 25:11. Derek Stone (14th) and Marion Body (27th) rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals. Genther and Ekel received First Team All-GLIAC honors while Cortland Seaver and Derek Stone garnered Second Team honors.

 

Tiffin Dragons

TU’s men’s cross country squad finished 8th of 11 teams at the GLIAC Championships held at Saginaw Valley State University. Mike Eblin was the top runner for the Dragons, taking 42nd in 26:25.2. Nick Thomas was next in 55th place in 26:37.7. Other runners in the top five for TU were Atlantis Troutman (58th), Dominique O’Neill (66th), and Adam Nunns (76th).

 

 

Wayne State Warriors

The Wayne State men’s cross country team finished in fourth place at Saturday’s GLIAC Championship race with 117 points. Sophomore Kevin deBear was Wayne State’s top runner with a 20th place finish at 25:52.4. Senior Sam Breen finished in 24th place (25:58.8) and junior Pat Webster represented the Warriors’ third finisher in the top-30 by placing 29th overall with a time of 26:04.7 Sophomores Travis Barczak (26:09.7—32nd) and Alex Townsend (26:17.9—36th) were WSU’s fourth and fifth finishers in the race. In his first GLIAC Championship, freshman Jimmy Maloney ran a time of 26:29.2 to finish in 47th place while sophomore Charlie Cavell produced a 57th place finish in 26:44.2. A trio of Wayne State runners controlled spots 62-64 as freshmen Saeed Saleh (26:49.2) and Matt Devey (26:51.8) placed just in front of senior Vince Bechard (26:53.0).
