Bay City, Mich -- Hillsdale College defeated Michigan Technological University in the 2009 GLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament, 81-69, and lead a field of four GLIAC schools into the 2009 Midwest Region Tournament. Joining Hillsdale in the Regional field are: Michigan Tech, Northwood University, and Grand Valley State University.

Ashland - The Eagles lost in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament. AU traveled up to Grand Valley State, and in an offensive struggle, the Eagles lost, 59-49. Grand Valley owned the glass, out-rebounding the Eagles, 44-31. AU couldn't find its stride from the free-throw line, connecting on only 66.7 percent (10-of-15) in the contest. The Lakers also dominated the paint, scoring 32 to the Eagles' 18 on the interior. Ashland was led by senior Lynsey Warren, who scored 11 points and had six rebounds. Senior Betsy Morrison scored nine points and added eight rebounds. Senior Alethea Lamberson had six points and four assists. GVSU was led by Emma Veach, who scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Both Kim Wyngaard and Jasmine Padin added 13 points for the Lakers. Senior Lisa Graue finished her career as an Eagle with 1,048 career points, which puts her at 13th all-time on the AU scoring list. Senior Alethea Lamberson finished her career with 419 assists, which puts her second in career assists. Ashland loses five seniors from this year's squad, which finished with a 17-11 record.

Ferris State - Fourth-seeded Grand Valley State took advantage of the homecourt edge and poor shooting from Ferris State to top the Bulldogs 67-49 in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Tuesday (March 3) evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich...The Bulldogs and Lakers were tied at 23 points apiece at halftime, but GVSU used a strong second-half showing to outscore FSU 44-26 over the final 20 minutes...FSU concludes the season with a 14-14 overall record...The Bulldogs were paced by sophomore forward/center Justin Keenan, who had a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds while playing 30 minutes in the contest. Ferris shot only 23% (12-52) for the game and had 12 turnovers in the setback...FSU dropped to 0-4 all-time in GLIAC Tournament play against the Lakers. Ferris was making its 10th tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years after missing the event a year ago...FSU loses two seniors from this year's squad in forwards Jason Holder and Mark Gildersleeve, but will return the bulk of its roster for the 2009-10 campaign...Keenan was honored as an All-GLIAC North Division First Team pick while sophomore guard Darien Gay received second team all-conference laurels...This year represented the seventh consecutive year the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games under seventh-year head coach Bill Sall after the program had not done so in the four years prior to his arrival. 

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State found out on Sunday night that it advanced to the Midwest Regional Tournament for the ninth time in school history, as it will match up with top-seed and host, Northern Kentucky. The Norse are the defending Division II National Champions, but the Lakers knocked off NKU last season in Allendale, 66-55...with its win over Ashland on Tuesday night, GVSU clinched a 20-win season for the fourth time in the last five years. The Lakers made their 10th appearance in the GLIAC Tournament and fifth straight berth in the league tourney...at Thursday night's GLIAC Final Four banquet, senior Kim Wyngaard was named to the All-GLIAC North Division First Team, while freshman guard Emma Veach was voted to the All-GLIAC North Division Second Team. Veach was also tabbed as the GLIAC Freshman of the Year, the first such Laker to win the award since Mary Randall in 1997. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Van Tiflin was named to the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team...freshman point guard Jasmine Padin broke the school single-season record for three-pointers, knocking down five triples in the semifinal loss to Hillsdale. Padin has tallied 69 trifectas for the season, breaking the previous mark of 67 set by Erika Ryskamp in both 2004-05 and 2005-06. She has also recorded 121 assists in her rookie campaign, just three assists shy of the single-season top-10 list...the Lakers have made more free throws (384) than their opponents have attempted (381) this season, headlined by Wyngaard's 91.4 percent from the charity stripe, the highest figure in school history. 

Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team won its first GLIAC Tournament Championship since 2002 after defeating Michigan Tech University 81-69 in Houghton Saturday night...It was the first time since the conference went to campus sites that a non-host school won the tournament...The Chargers made 11 of their first 13 shots and built a 26-7 lead on the Huskies in the first eight minutes of Saturday's game...Senior Katie Cezat was named Tournament MVP after getting 35 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists in the championship game...Cezat set five GLIAC Tournament records: most points in a series (77), field goals made in a series (30), free throws made in a series (29), rebounds in a series (44) and defensive rebounds in a series (34)...Junior Brooke Knight set a GLIAC Tournament record for most assists in a series with 23...Knight tied the GLIAC tournament record for most assists in a game with 12 against Grand Valley State Friday night...The Chargers are the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region, and will play the University of Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament...This is the third straight NCAA appearance that Hillsdale is the No. 2 seed, a seed the team had in 2003 and 2008...Hillsdale is 5-2 in its last seven GLIAC Tournament games, dating back to 2007.  

Lake Superior State - LSSU put GLIAC Tournament champion Hillsdale to the test by leading 59-47 with 4:34 remaining during last Tuesday's quarterfinal game. Sophomore guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Lakers with 18 points, and senior forward Jaclyn Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.) followed with 14 points and eight rebounds as LSSU lost 62-60. Armstrong and senior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) received All-GLIAC honors. Armstrong, who made the first team, averaged 17.7 points per game to rank second in the GLIAC in scoring. She finished her career with 1,436 points, which ranks eighth on LSSU's career scoring list. Armstrong scored 548 points this season, which is the third-highest single-season point total in Laker women's basketball history. She led the LSSU in scoring in 2007-08 and 2008-09. VanderWal, a second-team honoree, led the GLIAC in field-goal percentage at .641 and averaged 10.9 points per game. She was the league's fifth-ranked rebounder at 8.4 rebounds per game, ranked 10th in free-throw percentage at .830 and second in blocked shots at 2.3. VanderWal totaled 778 career points and 616 career rebounds. Her 259 rebounds this season ranks fourth on LSSU's all-time single-season list. Her career field-goal percentage of .614 ranks second on LSSU's all-time list behind Becky Marquardt-King. VanderWal joins senior Tim VanOudheusden as the first two Laker basketball players to go through LSSU's nursing program.  

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech has qualified for its fourth NCAA Tournament in the last five years and 14th time overall. The Huskies will face Northwood Friday (March 13) at 8:30 p.m. It will be just the fifth time in Tech's 25 NCAA Tournament games they will play a conference foe. Michigan Tech is 11-13 overall in NCAA Tournament contests . Michigan Tech improved its record in GLIAC Tournament games to 25-16 with a 2-1 record last week. The Huskies had won five straight league playoff games before losing to Hillsdale 81-69 in the title game last Saturday (March 7). Tech has advanced to the GLIAC Championship game 11 times with a 4-7 record in those games . Junior Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) posted two double doubles last week to run her season total to 16. The 6-0 forward improved her season rebounding average to 10.0 per game. She has 300 rebounds on the year - just one shy of her own school record of 301 set last year . Junior Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) posted double digits in scoring each of last week's three GLIAC Tournament games to earn All-Tournament honors. Danen went 21-of-38 from the field in the tournament to raise her season field goal percentage to a team-high 53.9 . Junior Katie Zimmerman (Green Bay, Wis./East) added seven 3-pointers to improve school-record total for the season to 86. The 5-6 guard was also named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team . Freshman Lynn Giesler (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) tallied a career-high 13 points without missing a shot in the GLIAC semifinal vs. Ferris State. She went 4-of-4 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line in the 71-53 victory.

Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team concluded its season with a loss to Michigan Tech in the GLIAC Tournament...NMU ends the season with 14 wins, which is the most since the 2004-05 season when the Wildcats won 19 games...Kelsey Deacon ends the 2008-09 season with a career-high 456 points, she is the lone member of the team to average over 10 points a game (16.3 ppg). For her career she ends with 1,345 points which puts her 11th on the NMU all-time scoring list...Deacon also led the team with 85 assists and three-pointers made and attempted (69-194)...Two ‘Cats ended the season with over 120 rebounds, Erin Powers led the way with 142 rebounds (5.1 rpg) while Angie Leckson had 120 rebounds (4.4)...Leckson (17) and Powers (13) led NMU in blocks...Steffani Stoeger had a team-high 45 steals. 

Northwood - The Northwood women's basketball team earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history Sunday night (March 8)...the Timberwolves are seeded fifth in the Midwest Region and will play No. 4 Michigan Tech Friday night (March 13) at 8:30 p.m....NU dropped its GLIAC Tournament opener to Ferris State 73-68...NU led by six with 3:20 remaining in the game, but FSU went 3-4 from the floor and 10-10 from the foul line in the final moments to earn the win...the Timberwolves were led by Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Mich./Dow), who registered three milestones in the game against the Bulldogs...she became the 11th player in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career...Ostergren also set NU school records for free throws made in a season (132) and free throws made in a career (322)...she led all scorers in the game with 21 points.
