BAY CITY, Mich. --
Senior guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry
Ford II) of Lake Superior State University has been
selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(GLIAC) women’s basketball “Player of the
Year”. Rookie point guard Brittany Gibson
(Detroit, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) of Northwood
University was chosen as “Freshman of the Year,” while
Michigan Technological University head coach Kim
Cameron earned GLIAC “Coach of the Year”
honors. All three were selected by the GLIAC women’s
basketball coaches in conjunction with all-conference
balloting.
Joseph guided Lake Superior
State’s offensive with scoring and passing, earning GLIAC
“Player of the Week” honors twice this season. She
ranked third in GLIAC scoring at 16.5 points per game, and ranked
fourth in the league in average assists per game (4.8) and
three-point field-goal percentage (.451).
From Dec. 11 through Jan. 13, Joseph strung
together five straight outings of 20 or more points. She averaged
22.0 points per game during a stretch from Dec. 2 through Jan. 15.
She totaled five or more assists in 12 GLIAC contests. The
four-year starter scored 1,183 career points, finished second on
LSSU’s all-time assists list with 440, fourth in career
free-throw percentage (361-449, .805) and sixth in career
three-point field goals with 134. Joseph is a three-time GLIAC
All-Academic team selection.
Gibson is the first player in
Northwood history to earn GLIAC “Freshman of the Year”
honors. After starting the year 2-6, Northwood made Gibson the
starting point guard and proceeded to go 13-5 the rest of the
season. Since her arrival in the starting lineup, Gibson has
averaged 7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.8
blocks per game. Overall on the year, she has averaged 6.2 points,
4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Gibson has been a key part
of Northwood’s first-ever appearance in the GLIAC Tournament
semifinals.
Cameron has coached the
Huskies to a 24-2 record, a No. 5 national ranking and a No. 1
regional ranking in her first season at the helm of the program.
The Alpena, Mich., native took over an inexperienced group of
players that had started just 12 games between them and led the
group to the program’s fourth straight GLIAC North Division
title and 11th GLIAC crown overall. Tech compiled an 18-1 GLIAC
record, tying the school record for fewest league losses.

Wis./Lake Holcombe) of Michigan Tech; sophomore center
