Saginaw Valley State's Jaclyn Barrett Named GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University senior mid-fielder Jaclyn Barrett (Williamston, Mich.) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after recording three goals and her second hat trick on the season.

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team broke the school record for wins (Oct. 30) when they defeated Ferris State University 3-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second half when senior Jaclyn Barrett netted her first of her three goals on the day. Saginaw Valley went up 2-0 on the Bulldogs in the 64th minute of the game when Barrett shot the ball through the goalkeeper’s hands and just minutes later Barrett would cap off the afternoons scoring with her third straight goal and her second hat trick on the season.

Ashland Eagles (3-13-3, 0-12-2 GLIAC)

The Eagles finished their season with a 1-0 loss at home to Northern Michigan. It leaves the Eagles with a 3-13-3 record overall and a 0-12-2 record in the conference. Three seniors played in their final game. Krista Herbst ended as AU’s all-time leader in saves with 250, Casey Snyder ended in a tie for 10th in AU’s goals scored list with 22 and Kelly Usher finished in a tie for seventh in AU’s goals scored list with 25.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (3-13-2, 3-10-1 GLIAC)

Sophomore forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) registered both a team and career season-high 22 points on 10 goals with two assists in 18 matches this season. Her 10 goals this fall ranks tied for ninth place among FSU’s all-time single-season leaders. Senior defender-goaltender Stevie Salow (Saginaw/Heritage) concluded her four-year career ranking third on Ferris State’s all-time leaders list with 4,419 career minutes played. Salow played a career season-best 1,627 minutes this season in 18 outings. Senior goaltender Kari Alsager (Mount Pleasant) compiled 150 career saves in 39 contests to rank fifth on the Bulldogs’ career leaders chart. She posted 44 stops this campaign while generating a 2-4-1 mark in 705:04 minutes for 13 contests. Ferris State’s four senior-member class of Stevie Salow, Kari Alsager, forward Megan McCabe (Brighton/Pinckney), and defender Ashley Erickson (Walled Lake/Central) accounted for 59.1 of the team’s goal-scoring.

 

Findlay Oilers (5-10-2, 4-8-2 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay women’s soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Tiffin University on Saturday, October 31 in Tiffin, Ohio. The loss gives the Oilers an 5-10-2 record on the season with a 4-8-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Oilers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Megan Gallaway found the back of the net off of an assist by Brittany Guglielmi with only 8:24 off the clock. The Dragons would then tie the game before the break and connect on the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining in the first overtime period. Alicia Tutino took the loss by allowing both goals to go along with four saves. The Oilers will be back in action again on November 3 at the GLIAC Tournament. More information about the tournament will be posted as soon as it is received.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (17-0-2, 13-0-1 GLIAC)

The Lakers held on to the No. 3 rank in the NSCAA poll with wins over Northwood (8-0) and Ferris State (2-1). GVSU is still undefeated with a record of 17-0-2, 13-0-1 GLIAC. GVSU has improved its unbeaten streak to 59 regular season matches and 39 unbeaten conference games, dating back to the 2006 season. In the win over Northwood, freshman forward Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) recorded three goals, while junior forward Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.) notched two goals and two assist while senior forward Katie Johnson (Petoskey, Mich.) recorded two assists. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) recorded her ninth shutout on the year. In the victory over Ferris State freshmen Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) and Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) recorded a goal. Erin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) is leading the team and the GLIAC in assist with 13 and assists per game with 0.68.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (9-8-1, 7-6-1 GLIAC)

The Wildcats concluded the regular season with a win at Ashland Saturday (1-0). Kara Music recorded her third shutout of the season and 21st of her career. Music holds the NMU career record for shutouts…Dana Stephens scored the lone goal as she leads the team with 10 on the season. NMU will host Findlay Tuesday in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament, the two teams tied in Findlay in early October (1-1 2OT) and then in Marquette later in the month the Wildcats downed the Oilers 2-0.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (7-9-1, 4-8-1 GLIAC)

Northwood’s lone game of the week at SVSU was postponed due to rain . The Timberwolves will face Tiffin in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament.

 

 

 

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (13-2-2, 10-1-2 GLIAC)

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team broke the school record for wins (Oct. 30) when they defeated Ferris State University 3-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second half when senior Jaclyn Barrett netted her first of her three goals on the day off a pass from Kayla Johnston. Saginaw Valley went up 2-0 on the Bulldogs in the 64th minute of the game when Barrett shot the ball through the goalkeeper’s hands on a pass from Tiffany Bell, and just minutes later Barrett would cap off the afternoons scoring with her third straight goal and her second hat trick on the season. The Saginaw Valley defense once again played tough allowing only three shots on goal all of which goalkeeper Anne Berschbach was able to save; the shutout was her eighth of the season. The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer match with Northwood University set for 3 pm (Oct. 30) has been postponed due to poor field conditions. A make-up date will be announced soon.

 

Tiffin Dragons (10-5-2, 8-4-2 GLIAC)

Ashley Davis continued her strong freshman season, scoring two goals and three assists in a 3-0 week for the Dragons. Starting the week at Davis & Elkins, Davis posted a goal and assist in a 2-1 victory. In a 2-1 overtime victory against GLIAC rival Findlay, Davis scored the winning goal in the 96th minute. Finally, against Lake Erie, Davis picked up two assists on the Dragons’ first two goals in a 5-0 win. Davis leads the Dragons with 9 goals and 10 assists for the season. TU’s Danielle Eaken also scored a goal off a pass from Lauren Turkington against Davis & Elkins. Emily Demorest played in goal 90 minutes for the win. TU picked up a clutch 2-1 victory in overtime against Findlay on Senior Day.After a scoreless second half, Ashley Davis headed a through ball home from 15 yards off a pass from Kirsten White for the game winner. Lindsey Gallagher got the win in goal, making 6 saves in 100 minutes. TU won for the seventh time in eight games, dominating play against Lake Erie in a 5-0 victory.
