Saginaw Valley State's Samantha Echols Named GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University sophomore midfielder Samantha Echols (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after scoring two game winning goals.

Saginaw Valley State University sophomore midfielder Samantha Echols led the Cardinals to a pair of overtime victories last week over Northern Michigan University and Ashland University. She scored two goals, both overtime game-winners, in the two matches. Against Northern, she found the back of the net on her second shot of the contest in the second overtime to make the final score 1-0. In the Ashland match, Samantha’s second shot would again be the difference, this time a 2-1 final score that ended in the first overtime.

 

-----GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Notes-----

Ashland Eagles (3-10-3, 0-9-2 GLIAC)

The Eagles went 0-2-0 at home this past week. They currently are 3-10-3 overall and 0-9-2 in the GLIAC. The Eagles lost to Northwood on Friday (Oct. 16), 3-2. They also were defeated by Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 18), 2-1, in overtime. In both contests, AU held a 1-0 advantage but could not hold on for the victory. Sophomore Jamie Greene scored a goal in both games as she now has three goals on the season. The Eagles go on the road this week as they travel to Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 23), and Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 25).

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (2-11-2, 2-8-1 GLIAC)

Sophomore forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) has accumulated both a team and career single-season high 19 points (9-1=19) this season in 15 matches, which surpasses her 11 points (5-1=11) in 19 contests last season. Borgman has tallied at least a point in seven of her 15 appearances this fall. Freshman midfielder Hillary Procunier (Davison/Flint Kearsley) tallied her first collegiate goal in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 conference win at Findlay with the contest’s initial score. Procunier has totaled three points (1-2=3) in her last three matches after not recording a point in her previous eight contests. Junior defender/midfielder Kristen March’s (Canton/Plymouth Salem) assist at Findlay last Sunday (10/18) represented her second point (0-2=2) of this season in 14 outings. Ferris State’s win at Findlay last Sunday (10/18) ended the team’s eight-match non-winning streak.

 

Findlay Oilers (4-8-2, 3-6-2 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay women’s soccer team was defeated 6-0 by 4th ranked Grand Valley State University on Friday, October 16. Brianna Milne took the loss while making 13 saves for the Oilers. The University of Findlay women’s soccer team was defeated 2-1 by Ferris State University on Sunday, October 18 at DeHaven Field. The loss gives the Oilers a 4-8-2 record on the season with a 3-6-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). All three goals in the game were scored in the first period as Sara Jones registered the Oilers lone score at the 32:44 mark of the game. Alicia Tutino allowed both goals and made three saves in the net for Findlay. The Oilers will be back in action again on October 23 when they travel to Marquette, Michigan to take on Northern Michigan University at 2:00 p.m.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (14-0-2, 10-0-1 GLIAC)

The #5 Lakers advances their record to 14-0-2, 10-0-1 GLIAC and improves their unbeaten streak to 56 regular season games and 36 unbeaten conference matches over the weekend with wins over Findlay (6-0) and Tiffin (2-1). In the win over Findlay freshman forward Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) recorded two goals, while senior Katie Johnson (Petoskey, Mich.), junior Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.) and sophomore Kayla Klosterman (Columbus, Ohio) notched a goal. Freshman Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) assisted on three of the six goals and sophomores Erin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) and Megan Brown (Jenison, Mich.) each recorded an assist in the win over the Oilers. In the victory over Tiffin, Johnson and Klosterman both recorded their second goals of the weekend, while senior defender Natalja Stanski (Tecumseh, Ont.) and freshman forward Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) notched an assist. GVSU outshot opponents 45-6 over the weekend, with a 27-3 advantage in shots on goal.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (7-7-1, 5-5-1 GLIAC)

Both of Northern Michigan’s games went into double overtime last week as the Wildcats split, losing to Saginaw Valley State on a penalty kick and getting a goal in the extra time against the Timberwolves. NMU is now 1-1-1 in overtimes games this season. Dana Stephens kicked home the game-winner against the Cardinals as she has a team-high nine goals on the season and leads the team with four game-winning goals. Joanna Kiilunen scored NMU’s other goal against Saginaw Valley State and now has four on the season. The ‘Cats face Findlay and Tiffin this week to conclude the home portion of the regular season.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (7-7-1, 4-6-1 GLIAC)

Northwood went 1-1 in a pair of close matches, defeating Ashland 3-2 before falling in the final moments of double overtime against Northern Michigan 2-1.The Timberwolves are now 7-7-1 overall, 4-6-1 in the GLIAC, a year ago, Northwood went 2-16 overall and 0-14 in the GLIAC. Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) continued her outstanding season, netting all three Northwood goals at Ashland. She scored six goals against the Eagles this season and currently leads the GLIAC in goals (17) and points (40). Her 17 goals are the second most for a player in a season in school history. Against NMU, Mallory McCarthy (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) scored her sixth goal of the season, which is second on the team. NU was less than four minutes away from a draw against the Wildcats, but Northern Michigan scored the game-winner at 106:48. Northwood has a pair of road matches this week, traveling to Grand Valley State Friday night before taking on Ferris State Sunday.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (12-1-2, 9-0-2 GLIAC)

 

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team defeated Northern Michigan University in a Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) (Oct. 16). Saginaw Valley remained scoreless in the first two halves of the contest forcing the game into overtime. Sophomore Samantha Echols scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute of the game. Anne Berschbach held the opposition scoreless, making two saves and recording her seventh shutout of the season for the Cardinals. The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team defeated Ashland University (Oct. 18) 2-1 in a GLIAC match-up. The win ties a school record of 12 wins in a season for the Cardinals. Saginaw Valley would have to fight back after Ashland got on the board in the 34th minute of the game to give them the 1-0 advantage. Junior Amanda Kady knotted the score in the 83rd minute to force the game into overtime. Echols found the back of the net on a penalty kick for her eighth goal of the season. With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 12-1-2 overall on the season and 9-0-2 in the GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-10-3 overall on the season and 0-9-2 in the GLIAC, The Cardinals will return to action on Friday (Oct 2

 

 

Tiffin Dragons (5-5-2, 5-4-2 GLIAC)

Tiffin University used a big day from Ashley Davis to defeat Ferris State 5-1. Davis scored two goals along with delivering two assists to lead the Dragons. TU fell behind 1-0, but would score the next five goals to seal the victory. The first score came at 18:28 when Davis found teammate Felicia Ruiz to tie the game at one. Alexandra Sevastakis would be next to benefit from a Davis pass as she scored a goal that would put the Dragons up for good in the 50th minute. Davis then scored her two goals to give the Dragons some insurance. Lesley Dotson scored the final goal of the game in the 84th minute on a header that came from Turkington’s corner kick. Lindsey Gallagher played 90 minutes in goal for the Dragons and recorded four saves to go along with the one goal she allowed. The Dragons outshot Ferris State by a 22-10 margin. Tiffin University was one-for-one on their goal attempts, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Grand Valley State University Lakers left with a 2-1 victory.
