Grand Valley State's Chelsea Parise Named GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich., Stevenson) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after picking up her ninth shutout victory of the season.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) notched three saves over the weekend, helping the Lakers to a win over Saginaw Valley State (2-0). She is 15-0-2 on the year and picked up her ninth shutout victory on Saturday (Oct. 25). Parise has only allowed seven goals this season and has a goal-against average of 0.43.

 

-----GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Notes-----

Ashland Eagles (3-12-3, 0-11-2 GLIAC)

Ashland went 0-2-0 this past week on the road. The Eagles lost at Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 23), 2-1, and at Findlay on Sunday (Oct. 25). Freshman Maria Lackey scored one goal and had one assist in the two games. On the week, junior Alicia VanZanten added a goal and sophomore Kim Barry added an assist. The Eagles finish out their regular season on Saturday (Oct. 31) at home against Northern Michigan.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (3-11-2, 3-8-1 GLIAC)

Ferris State made its first appearance at Top Taggart Field since its inaugural 1999 season and posted a 2-0 conference win over Northwood Sunday (10/25). Senior goalkeeper Kari Alsager (Mount Pleasant) recorded her first career shutout in the Bulldogs’ 2-0 home league victory against Northwood as she turned away all five shots on goal in the complete-match decision. Alsager has played between the posts for 2,288 minutes in 37 career appearances to date.Senior defender Stevie Salow’s (Saginaw/Heritage) match-winning goal versus Northwood Sunday (10/25) represents the first of her career. Prior to the tally, Salow’s last marker occurred on Oct. 19, 2007, in a 3-1 league loss at Northern Michigan.

 

Findlay Oilers (5-9-2, 4-7-2 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay women’s soccer team was defeated 2-0 by Northern Michigan University on Friday, October 23 in Marquette, Michigan. The University of Findlay women’s soccer team defeated Ashland University 2-1 on Sunday, October 25 at DeHaven Field. The victory gives the Oilers a 5-9-2 record on the season with a 4-7-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).Down 1-0 in the second half, Emily Beddoes tied the game at the 68:06 mark with an unassisted score followed by the game-winner from Sara Jones off of an assist from Brittany Guglielmi with just over ten minutes to play.Alicia Tutino made one save in the net for Findlay to earn the win as the Oilers out-shot the Eagles 19-3. The Oilers will be back in action again on October 31 when they face Tiffin University at 12:00 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (15-0-2, 11-0-1 GLIAC)

The #5 Lakers advances their record to 15-0-2, 11-0-1 GLIAC and improves their unbeaten streak to 57 regular season games and 37 unbeaten conference matches over the weekend with a win over Saginaw Valley State 2-0…In the win freshman midfielders Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wis.) and Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) recorded goals, while junior forward Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.) notched an assist…Goalie Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) recorded her ninth shutout and notched three saves in the victory…GVSU picked up its 11th shutout win and outshot SVSU 24-6, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal…Botts leads the team with 11 goals and 25 points, while sophomore Erin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) has a team-high 10 assists.

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (8-8-1, 6-6-1 GLIAC)

The Wildcats conclude the regular season with a game at Ashland Saturday. Last week Northern Michigan University played both of its matches at home as the ‘Cats defeated Findlay (2-0) and lost to Tiffin (0-1). Kara Music recorded her 20th career shutout and second of the season against Findlay . Music is the all-time career shutout leader in NMU history. Goals against the Oilers were scored by NMU’s top two goal scorers on the season as Dana Stephens and Ashley DeKeyser scored. Stephens leads the team with nine goals while DeKeyser has four and is tied for second on the team.

 

Northwood Timberwolves (7-8-1, 4-7-1 GLIAC)

Northwood dropped a 2-0 contest at Ferris State last week in its lone last week. The Timberwolves were scheduled to travel to Grand Valley State as well, but the match was postponed. NU is now 7-8-1 overall, 4-7-1 GLIAC. The Timberwolves remain in position for their first trip to the GLIAC Tournament. Keeper Emily Pierce (Clarkston, Mich.) made seven saves in the loss. NU will travel to Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State to round out the regular season.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (12-2-2, 9-1-2 GLIAC)

The Sagianw Valley State University women’s soccer team saw its 14 game unbeaten streak snapped (Oct. 25) at #5 Grand Valley State University, 2-0. The Cardinals’ fell behind in the fifth minute when Grand Valley’s Ashley Bott scored on a crossing pass from the right side. SVSU seemed to settle in until the Lakers’ found the back of the net in the 28th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. The Cardinals would be able to hold the Lakers the rest of the game defensively, but would only be able to muster three shots on goal as they could not find a way to break past the Grand Valley defense. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 12-2-2 overall on the season and 9-1-2 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers move to 15-0-2 overall on the season and 11-0-1 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Ferris State to make up last Friday’s contest that was postponed due to weather, before returning home on Friday (Oct. 30) to close out the regular season against Northwood.

 

 

Tiffin Dragons (7-5-2, 7-4-2 GLIAC)

Danielle Eaken scored the game winning goal in the 88th minute to make the Dragons a 2-1 victor against Ashland University. Eaken took a pass from Ashley Davis and scored the goal. The Dragons fell behind early as 59 seconds into the game Ashland scored on a short kick over Dragons goalkeeper Lindsey Gallagher. The Dragons trailed until Kirsten White scored off a header from a Shelly Rogers corner kick at the 63:55 mark. Gallagher made one save in her 90 minutes of work in goal…Stephanie Bowman had the game winning goal, striking a shot in the 35th minute on a pass from Shelly Rogers to give TU a 1-0 win at Northern Michigan. Lindsey Gallagher got the shutout victory in goal, making 5 saves over 90 minutes. TU outshot the Wildcats 13-7 while also holding a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
