Bay City, MI -- Ashland's Sara Tegner was chosen as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office.

Ashland University freshman Sara Tegner led the Eagles to a 2-0 record to open the season and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. She won both of her No. 4 singles matches during the week, defeating Wayne State's Deby Correa (6-3, 6-3) and Findlay's Candace Pahl (6-2, 6-0). Tegner also teamed-up with Christa Halicki at No. 3 doubles to defeat Correa and Sargam Bhatt of Wayne State, 8-3, and Pahl and Elizabeth Blosser of Findlay by an 8-3 count as well.

Ashland - The Eagles started off 2-0 for the second time in school history. AU traveled to Wayne State on Friday and won, 6-3. Ashland played at Findlay on Saturday and won the match, 8-1. The Eagles won five of the six singles and swept the doubles. Freshman Sara Tegner led the Eagles, going 4-0 over the weekend, winning twice in fourth singles and twice in third doubles. AU will travel to Malone (Ohio) on Wednesday (Sept. 17) and then will compete in the ITA Regionals Friday and Saturday (Sept. 19-20). The Eagles only have three holdovers from last season as they are trying to integrate four freshman into the starting line up.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University women's tennis team did not compete this past week. The Bulldogs will take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships Friday and Saturday (Sept. 19-20) in Midland, Mich.

Findlay - The University of Findlay women's tennis team defeated Tiffin University on Sunday, September 14 to even their record at 2-2 on the season. The 6-3 win over the Dragons also gives the Oilers a 1-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)...Candace Pahl and Elizabeth Blosser each recorded a pair of victories for the Oilers as they teamed up to defeat Erika Bailty and Beth Clark 8-5 in doubles competition and then each won their singles events. Pahl defeated Jessica Stefanov 6-1, 6-3 while Blosser won 6-0, 6-1 over Melissa Poe...The Oilers will be back in action again on September 19-20 at the ITA Touranment in Midland, Michigan.

Grand Valley State - The Lakers begin their season Thursday, Sept. 18 at Saginaw Valley State.

Lake Superior State - Laker freshmen Erin Wiethoff (Escanaba, Mich.), Adrienne DiVito (Washington, Mich.) and Ingrid Pflieger (Grossaitingen, Germany) posted their first collegiate victories during the Lakers' opening week of competition. Wiethoff was 3-0 at No. 6 singles, while DiVito was 2-1 at No. 3 singles. Pflieger was 1-2 during her first stint at No. 1 singles, posting a victory over SVSU's Katie Hanover...The Lakers were winless in doubles during all three dual matches, but 10-8 in singles play.

Michigan Tech - Sophomore Nathalia Rondelli (Macae, Brazil) turned in a pair of singles victories in the women's tennis team's opening weekend including the deciding point in a 5-4 win at Saginaw Valley State. Rondelli won both of her matches in three sets . Freshman Victoria Zhilkina (St. Petersburg, Russia), playing at number one singles, was 1-1 in her first two career matches. Tech will take a weekend off from GLIAC play to compete in the ITA Great Lakes Regional in Midland, Mich.

Northwood - The Northwood University women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-1 win over Lake Superior State Friday afternoon (September 12)...Northwood opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches, dropping a total of four games en route to a 3-0 lead. The Timberwolves then earned the win by posting straight-set victories at the top-five singles positions...The Northwood University women's tennis team then moved to 3-0 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13)...Northwood claimed the overall victory by winning straight-set matches in five of the six singles contests. MTU won a three-set match at the No. 3 position to make the final 7-2.

Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team played their first home matches of the season this past weekend (Sept. 12-13) and split with Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State. The Cards started fast, taking games at one doubles and at three doubles. The team of Katie Hanover (St. Johns, Mich.) and Danielle Coldren (West Bloomfield, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) won 9-7 at one singles and teammates Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich./St. Clair) and freshman Anessa Campian (Troy, Mich.) took the three doubles match by a score of 8-3...The Cardinals will be in action next week against Grand Valley State and Findlay.

Tiffin - Ashley Hershner won her second singles match at Findlay 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 and teamed with Taylor Cooper at second doubles to win 8-3...Teauana Long/Jessica Stefanov picked up the only other win for the Dragons this week, winning against Findlay at first doubles 8-6.

Wayne State - Wayne State hosted Tiffin University on Saturday in the Warriors' second conference match of the week. It was a one-sided effort, as Wayne State women's tennis swept the Dragons, 9-0. The Warrior women lost at home to Ashland, 6-3, on Friday, and are now 1-1 in the conference and 2-1 overall...Wayne State women's tennis is on the road this week (September 19-20). They will be playing in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Northwood University, in Midland, Mich.
