Northwood's Berkova Chosen As GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Bay City, Mich. -- Northwood University sophomore Darina Berkova has been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office.

Northwood University Sophomore Darina Berkova claimed the singles title at the Wilson / ITA Great Lakes Regional Championship this weekend. Berkova dominated the field in singles, winning all four of her matches in straight sets. She dropped a total of just five games in the four matches and won six sets by the score of 6-0. Berkova earned the title by defeating No. 8 seed Khrystsnia Triboi of Drury in the finals 6-2, 6-0.

Ashland - The Eagles improved their record to 3-0 with a win over Malone College. They won every match for a 9-0 victory. This past weekend AU had three players compete at the ITA Regionals. Freshman Paola Orazco was ranked 12th in singles and lost in the third round to the number three seed Ashley Neumann. Freshman Victoria Goudy also made it to the third round before losing to the number two seed Chandra Capossi. In the doubles tournament, Goudy and freshman Paige Cooper, seeded 8th, lost in the third round to the number 4 seed from Grand Valley. AU will travel to Tiffin on Wednesday (Sept. 24) for a 3 p.m. start. Ashland will also host the Ashland Invitational this Saturday (Sept. 27) at 11 a.m.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University women's tennis team took part in the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 19-20) in Midland, Mich...FSU sophomore Amy Ingle, who was seeded 11th in the draw, won a pair of singles matches to reach the round of 16 before she was eliminated by sixth-seeded Audrey Koopsen of Grand Valley State by a 6-0, 6-4 count...FSU sophomore Tiffany Rheynard, along with freshmen Natalie Diorio and Melissa Flowers, each notched a win in individual singles action...In doubles play, Ingle and Rheynard teamed up to win their opening match after a first-round bye, but suffered a 8-0 setback to Northwood's top-seeded tandem of Roberta Huetter and Ashley Neumann in the quarterfinals...The Bulldog women's tennis squad next visits Lake Superior State Friday, Sept. 26, for a 1:30 p.m. (EDT) league tilt in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Findlay - The Oilers lost their only match last week to Saginaw Valley State 8-1...On the season, the Oilers are 2-3 with a 1-3 mark in the GLIAC.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State started the season with a 9-0 win over Saginaw Valley State in Midland, Mich...The Lakers did not lose a set in the GLIAC match...Senior Audrey Koopsen (Kalamazoo, Mich.) won at first singles and first doubles...Jaime Oppenlander (Lewis Center, Ohio) won at first singles and did not lose a point (6-0, 6-0) in sixth singles...GVSU also competed at the Great Lakes Regionals over the weekend...Koopsen and Oppenlander reached the semifinals in doubles play, as did the team of freshman Katelyn Schaffer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and sophomore Jackie Shipman (Saline, Mich.)...Koopsen played her way to the quarterfinals in the singles tournament.

Lake Superior State - Junior No. 2 singles player Weronika Lomacka (Warsaw, Poland) finished 2-1 to post LSSU's top singles record at the ITA Great Lakes Women's Division II Championship in Midland. Lomacka defeated Ferris State's Ann Grant, 6-4, 6-0, and Indianapolis' Megan Farley, 6-1, 6-0, before losing to No. 4 seend Sharon Gill of Wayne State, 6-0, 6-2. She is 4-2 in singles so far this season. Freshman Adrienne DiVito (Washington, Mich.) and junior Carolyn Pumford (Freemont, Mich.) defeated Indianapolis' Meghan Teunis and Maggie Ashby, 8-4, to post the Lakers' first doubles victory of the season.

Michigan Tech - Silvia Oliveros made a trip to the semifinal of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Great Lakes Regional singles draw last weekend. The senior, who was seeded seventh, won her first three matches in the tournament before finally losing to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Darina Berkova of Northwood, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinal match . Michigan Tech will host its first two matches of the season with a Saturday (Sept. 27) match vs. Ferris State and Sunday (Sept. 28) match vs. Grand Valley State.

Northwood - The Northwood University women's tennis team took home both the singles and the doubles title at the Wilson/ITA Regional Sunday afternoon (September 21) ... Darina Berkova (Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic) took home the singles title, while the doubles team of Ashley Neumann (Port Colborn, Ont.) and Roberta Huetter (Gnas, Austria) claimed the doubles title ... both Berkova and the team of Neumann/Huetter were the top-seeds in the event ... they will now travel to the ITA National Championships, which will take place October 16-19, 2008 in Mobile, Alabama.

Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley State University played three matches over the past week, losing to both Northwood and Grand Valley, 9-0. The Cardinals did pick up a win over Findlay to close out the week by a score of 8-1. The Cardinals lone setback against Findlay came at 1 doubles. Senior Katie Hanover (St. John's, Mich./St. John's HS) took her number 1 singles match in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-4, after falling in her doubles match earlier in the afternoon when she teamed up with junior Danielle Coldren (West Bloomfield, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), 9-8...The Cardinals return to action next Friday (Sept. 26) when they host Wayne State University.

Tiffin - Tiffin University did not play this past week. The Dragons host the Ashland Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Wayne State - The Wayne State women's tennis team wrapped up a long weekend at the ITA Great Lakes Regional. No. 4 seeded Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ontario/ Academie Ste. Cecile), advanced two rounds better than she did last year. In the semifinal round Gill could not surpass No. 8 Khrystsina Tryboi (Drury). Tryboi won in straight sets despite Gill forcing extra games in the second set, 6-4 and 7-6...Freshman Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary School), had a very strong showing in her first matches of the season. She advanced to the round of eight, defeating the No. 9 seed Ingrid Pflieger (Lake Superior State University), and the No. 5 seed Alba Passanisi (Drury University), before falling to No. 1 Darina Berkova (Northwood).
