Northwood's Ashley Neumann Chosen As GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- Northwood University senior Ashley Neumann (Port Colborn, Ontario) has been named the GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" as announced by the league office.

Senior Ashley Neumann remained unbeaten in conference in both singles and doubles by earning a pair of key victories in the Timberwolves 5-4 victory over Grand Valley State. She teamed with Roberta Huetter to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles over Audrey Koopsen and Maria Gassanova. Neumann then went on to post a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles over previously unbeaten Gassanova. Neumann finished GLIAC regular season play with a 9-0 record in both singles and doubles. Her overall record stands at 24-1 (11-1 singles, 13-0 doubles).

Ashland - Ashland won both of their matches this past week. AU defeated Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 10), 7-2. The Eagles came back the next day and beat Lake Superior State, 5-4. Ashland improved their record to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC. Freshman Victoria Goudy went 4-0 in the matches. She won her second singles match against Tech's Silvia Oliveros, 6-2, 6-2. Goudy also beat the Lakers' Weronika Lomacka, 6-4, 6-4, in second singles. Goudy teamed up with freshman Paige Cooper to win both her first doubles matches as well. They defeated Tech's Oliveros and Nathalia Rondelli, 8-5. The duo then beat the Lakers' Lomacka and Gaby Juan-Alladio, 8-5. Ashland travels to Grand Valley State and Ferris State to compete for second place in the GLIAC this week. AU travels to GVSU on Friday (Oct. 17) and Ferris State on Saturday (Oct. 18).

Ferris State - The FSU women's tennis team split a pair of GLIAC road matches this past weekend. FSU fell to Wayne State 9-0 on Friday (Oct. 10) in Detroit, but bounced back to record an 8-1 win over Findlay in Saturday's (Oct. 11) match. The Bulldogs stopped a three-match losing streak with the win over the Oilers and improved to 4-3 overall and in GLIAC play with the triumph. FSU won two of the three doubles flights and took all six singles spots en route to the victory versus Findlay. Sophomore Amy Ingle, freshman Natalie Diorio, and senior Ann Grant were all double winners on the day.

Findlay - The Oilers lost three matches last week to fall to 2-9 on the season with a 1-7 mark in the GLIAC...Findlay lost 5-4 to Ohio Dominican, 8-1 to Ferris State, and 9-0 to Grand Valley State...Sophomore Haley Dudon won a pair of matches during the week to lead the team.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State dropped its first match of the season with a loss to Northwood (5-4) before rebounding with wins over Wayne State (7-2) and Findlay (9-0)...In singles play for dual matches, GVSU has posted a record of 37-5 (.881)...In GLIAC play, four different Lakers have not lost in singles play...The Lakers are undefeated at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in dual play...The Lakers are 44-11 (.800) in singles play and 21-9 (.700) in doubles play.

Lake Superior State - Ashland snapped LSSU's three-match win streak with a 5-4 home victory on Oct. 11...For the week, freshman Adrienne DiVito and junior Carolyn Pumford were 3-0 at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. DiVito improved to 8-3 overall, while Pumford improved to 6-5. They were 2-1 while playing together at No. 2 doubles...Freshmen Ingrid Pflieger and Erin Wiethoff are 7-0 at No. 3 doubles...For the season, the Lakers are a combined 37-32 in singles, but 14-20 in doubles. They are 1-3 overall in matches decided by a 5-4 score.

Michigan Tech - Victoria Zhilkina (St. Petersburg, Russia) won all four of her matches last week to improve to 6-1 at No. 1 singles and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles ... Freshman Danielle Stoll (Green Bay, Wis./East) gained her first win of the season, a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Tiffin's Melissa Poe at No. 6 singles ... Tech wraps up its fall regular season Saturday (Oct. 18) vs. Lake Superior State.

Northwood - The Northwood University women's tennis team completed the regular portion of their fall season with a 5-4 victory over Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (October 8). With the win, Northwood clinches the GLIAC regular season title. The Timberwolves will be the No. 1 seed for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament, which will take place at the Midland Community Tennis Center October 25-26. Northwood led 2-1 after doubles after three closely contested matches. The Timberwolves then picked up victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles to clinch the match and the regular season title. The Timberwolves finished the regular season with a combined record of 45-9 in GLIAC singles and 25-2 in conference doubles.

Saginaw Valley State - The Cardinals are idle until the GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship, Oct. 25-26 at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Tiffin - Taylor Cooper and Ashley Hershner each won three matches for the week, as the duo picked up two wins at second doubles against Lake Superior State, 8-3, and against Muskingum (Ohio), 8-0, while also picking up singles victories against Muskingum. Cooper won at third singles, 8-1, while Hershner won at second singles, 8-3...Teauana Long, Jessie Stefanov, Melissa Poe, and Beth Clark also won singles matches at Muskingum, while the third doubles squad of Erika Bailey/Beth Clark also won, 8-2...the other win for the week for TU came at first doubles against Lake Superior State, as Long/Stefanov won 8-4.

Wayne State - The Warriors split their matches at home this weekend, winning, 9-0 against Ferris State on Friday and then losing to Grand Valley State, 7-2 on Saturday. The warriors are 4-4 in conference play...Everyone was a winner as WSU recorded it's second shutout of the season. No. 1 singles Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ontario/Academie Ste. Cecile) lost the first set to Amy Ingle, 6-4. Gill then got into a rhythm, winning the next two sets, 6-1, 10-8, improving her singles record to 7-2...Against Grand Valley State, Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary School) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-5. The Warriors have a .542 winning percentage in conference doubles this season...WSU will host Findlay in the final regular season GLIAC contest before the tournament.
