GVSU's Jackie Shipman Chosen As GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University sophomore Jackie Shipman (Saline, Mich.) has been named the GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" as announced by the league office.

Sophomore Jackie Shipman 4-0 with two singles wins and two doubles wins over the weekend. Against Ashland (8-1), she won 6-3, 6-0 at sixth singles and then took third doubles with freshman partner Katelyn Schaffer by a score of 8-3. She was even more dominant against Tiffin, winning 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles. She teamed with Schaffer again and they blanked their opponents at third doubles, 8-0. Shipman is 9-1 (.900) on the season in singles play, including a 9-0 GLIAC record. She has won her last eight singles matches. In doubles, she is 8-2 overall with a 5-1 mark in conference.

-----GLIAC Women's Tennis Weekly Notes----- 

Ashland - Ashland split their two matches this past weekend. AU lost to Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 17), 8-1. The netters bounced back on Saturday (Oct. 18) to beat Ferris State, 6-3. The decisions over the weekend, puts the Eagles in third place in the conference before the GLIAC Championships this weekend. The third place regular season finish is the highest the Eagles have ever finished in the GLIAC. AU relied upon a large group of underclassmen to lead them to their historic feat. Freshman Paola Orozco played first singles, freshman Victoria Goudy played second singles, freshman Paige Cooper played third singles, freshman Sara Tegner played fourth singles, sophomore Corinne Paisley played fifth singles, and sophomore Alex Ware played sixth singles. The young group will look to continue their strong play this weekend in Midland, Mich.

Ferris State - The Ferris State University women's tennis team split a pair of league home matches this past weekend at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs topped Tiffin by a 9-0 score on Friday (Oct. 17) before falling to Ashland 6-3 in Saturday's (Oct. 18) league regular season finale. FSU concluded conference play with both a 5-4 overall and league record. Ferris posted a 29-25 cumulative record this season in GLIAC singles play along with a 10-17 conference doubles mark. The Bulldogs finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings.

Findlay - The University of Findlay women's tennis team lost, 7-2 on Wednesday, October 15 to Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan...Sophomore Haley Dudon was in on both wins as she captured a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision over Milena Vuksanovic in singles competition and then teamed with junior Kari Rudduck to win in doubles action, 8-4 over Kristina Goranskaya and Deby Correa... Findlay then improved to 3-10 on the season with a 7-2 win over Walsh University on Friday, October 17 in Canton, Ohio...Carrie Wise, Haley Dudon, Holly Vietzke and Candace Pahl each picked up a win in singles and doubles competition while Devin Games and Amanda Molnar both contributed to doubles wins...The Oilers blanked Indiana University of Pennsylvania 9-0 on Saturday, October 18 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The victory gives the Oilers a 4-10 record on the season.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State picked up wins at home against Ashland (8-1) and Tiffin (9-0) this week...GVSU did not lost a singles point over the weekend...In singles play for dual matches, GVSU has posted a record of 49-5 (.907)...In GLIAC play, three Lakers (Schaffer, Shipman, Trout) are a perfect 9-0 in singles...The Lakers are undefeated at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in dual play...The Lakers are 56-11 (.836) in singles play and 26-10 (.722) in doubles play. 

Lake Superior State - LSSU lost 6-3 at Michigan Tech on Oct. 18 to finish the regular season 4-7...LSSU's freshman No. 3 doubles team of Ingrid Pflieger (Grossaitingen, Germany) and Erin Wiethoff (Escanaba, Mich.) won 8-1 and improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the GLIAC...Wiethoff also won her No. 6 singles match and improved to 7-5...LSSU's only other winner was junior Carolyn Pumford (Bannister, Mich.) at No. 5 singles, as she also improved to 7-5...Freshman Adrienne DiVito (Washington, Mich.) ended the regular season with a loss, but has the Lakers' best singles record of 8-4 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC matches while playing in the No. 3 spot.

Michigan Tech - Victoria Zhilkina (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Asel Otunchieva (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) finished the GLIAC season with a perfect 9-0 record at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Zhilkina posted the team's best record at 7-1 at No. 1 ... Michigan Tech will face Wayne State Saturday (Oct. 25) in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies defeated the Warriors, 6-3, earlier this season ... Head coach Mike Axford is the reigning GLIAC Coach of the Year.

Northwood - The Timberwolves are idle until the GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship, Oct. 25-26 at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Saginaw Valley State - The Cardinals are idle until the GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship, Oct. 25-26 at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Tiffin - The Dragons were swept by Ferris State (10/17) and Grand Valley State (10/18) this past weekend. Tiffin will play next at the GLIAC Women's Tennis Championships in Midland, Mich.

Wayne State - Wayne State concluded the fall regular season with a 7-2 victory over Findlay. The Warriors won five of six singles matches and at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No.1 singles, Sharon Gill defeated Devin Games, posting her first double bagel of the year, 6-0, 6-0. Gill's career singles record winning percentage of .816 ranks first all-time in school history. Meghan Luzod improved her career record to 30-29 (.508). She came from behind to win in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 5 flight. Jennifer Bradford was a 6-0, 6-1, straight set winner at No.6 singles.
