Midland, Mich. -- The Northwood University Women's Tennis team won its sixth straight GLIAC Championship as the 2008-09 Fall Season concluded with the GLIAC Championships at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
Grand Valley State University was the runner-up in the tournament, with Wayne State finishing in the third spot overall.

Ashland - Ashland had its best
finish ever at the GLIAC tournament this past weekend when they
finished in fourth place. The Eagles beat Michigan Tech in the
first round, in a very close match, 5-4. Later that day, the Lakers
of Grand Valley swept AU off the court 5-0. On Sunday, Wayne State
upended the Eagles 5-2 in the third-place match. The Eagles overall
record now sits at 10-5, after the end of the fall portion of their
schedule.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University women's
tennis team suffered a 5-3 loss to Michigan Tech in Sunday's (Oct.
26) fifth-place match at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament held at the Midland
Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs
dropped two of the three doubles matches to the sixth-seeded
Huskies. MTU then captured three of the first five completed
singles flights to seal the victory. The three Michigan Tech
singles triumphs came at the top three spots in the lineup. Ferris
had opened league tournament action Saturday (Oct. 25) by suffering
a 5-2 setback to fourth-seeded Wayne State before bouncing back to
top number eight seed Lake Superior State by a 5-4 count later in
the evening. The Bulldogs wrapped up the fall season with a 6-6
overall record. FSU is tentatively slated to open the spring season
by taking on Bellarmine (Ky.) on Friday, Feb. 13, in a 2:30 p.m.
(EST) non-league tilt at Indianapolis, Ind.
Findlay - The Oilers were idle this past week, and
will continue play in the Spring.
Grand Valley State - Grand
Valley State picked up wins against Saginaw Valley State (5-0) and
Ashland (5-0) before falling to Northwood (5-1) in the GLIAC
Championship...In singles play for dual matches, GVSU posted a
record of 54-7 (.885)...In GLIAC play, three Lakers (Schaffer,
Shipman, Trout) were a perfect 9-0 in singles...The Lakers are
undefeated at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in dual play...The
Lakers were 61-13 (.824) in singles play and 32-13 (.711) in
doubles play.
Lake Superior State - Senior Weronika Lomacka
(Warsaw, Poland) and junior Carolyn Pumford (Bannister, Mich.) were
2-1 at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, respectively, to lead Lake Superior
State at the 2008 GLIAC Championship. Lomacka also teamed with
sophomore Gaby Juan-Alladio (Montreal, Que.) to beat Northwood No.
1 doubles duo of Ashley Neumann and Roberta Huetter 9-8 (7-4) for
the Lakers' lone victory against the top-seeded Timberwolves.
Freshman Adrienne DiVito (Washington, Mich.) had LSSU's best
singles record for the season, finishing 9-4 overall at No. 3.
Pumford was 9-5, Lomacka 9-8 and freshman Erin Wiethoff (Escanaba,
Mich.) 8-6 at No. 6. Freshman Ingrid Pflieger (Grossaitingen,
Germany) and Juan-Alladio were both 5-10 at Nos. 1 and 4 singles,
respectively. Pflieger and Wiethoff posted the Lakers' best doubles
record of 9-2 at No. 3. Both losses occurred at the GLIAC
Tournament.
Michigan Tech - The Michigan
Tech women's tennis team won two of three matches to finish fifth
at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament
over the weekend. The Huskies (7-5) lost a heartbreaker, 5-4 to
Ashland in the opening round before defeating Saginaw Valley State
5-2 and Ferris State 5-3...Overall, Victoria Zhilkina was
undefeated on the weekend with six total wins - three in singles
and three in doubles. Asel Otunchieva also went undefeated with
five wins as one of her singles matches was left unfinished with
the team score already decided...Michigan Tech wrapped up its 2008
fall season with a 7-4 overall record.
Northwood - The Northwood University women's
tennis team claimed its sixth straight GLIAC Championship Sunday
morning (October 26)...The Timberwolves (12-0) defeated Grand
Valley State (10-2) 5-1 in the GLIAC Tournament Championship match.
The two-day event was held at the Midland Community Tennis
Center...NU now earns the GLIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament, which will take place this spring.
Saginaw Valley State - The Cardinals lost to Grand
Valley State (5-0), Michigan Tech (5-2), and Lake Superior State
(5-3) at the GLIAC Championships over the weekend
(10/25-10/26).
Tiffin - The Dragons were idle last week, and will
continue play in the Spring.
Wayne State - With a 5-2
victory over the No. 3 seed, Ashland University, the Warriors took
third place in the GLIAC championship tournament. Although the
Eagles defeated WSU earlier in the regular season, Wayne State
proved their worth in the tournament...Sharon Gill was brilliant in
her defeat of No. 1 singles opponent Paola Orozco, 6-2, 6-0. The
Warriors won in three sets at the Nos. 2, 4 positions, and in No.6
singles Jennifer Bradford won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1...Wayne
State ends its fall season with a GLIAC record of 5-4 (9-5,
overall). Three WSU players were named all conference. Sophomore
Sharon Gill received first-team honors, Kristina Goranskaya was
named second-team all GLIAC, and Jennifer Bradford garnered an
honorable mention.
