GVSU's Alexander Named AVCA Division II National Player of the Week

Lexington, Ky. - One day after being named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career, it was announced on Tuesday (Oct. 21) that senior middle blocker Danielle Alexander is the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II Player of the Week. Alexander is the first player in GVSU history to win the award, after helping the Lakers push their winning streak to 18 consecutive matches and a #5 national ranking.

Alexander led Grand Valley State to its 3-0 weekend at the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament, including victories over #24 Indianapolis and #21 Northern Kentucky. The Lakers are now 21-2 overall and 5-2 in matches against ranked opponents, including winners of their last four top-25 contests.

In a 3-1 victory over Indianapolis on Friday (Oct. 17), Alexander recorded 16 kills and a .382 hitting percentage, to go along with four digs, two assists, two blocks, and a service ace. She followed that performance with 14 kills, only one attack error, and a .464 hitting percentage in a four-set win over Northern Kentucky. Alexander also added eight block assists and four digs in the victory.

Capping off her strong weekend, she totaled 12 kills and a .500 attack mark in a 3-0 sweep over Bellarmine on Saturday (Oct. 18). Alexander recorded five block assists and five digs against the Knights.

In the three wins, the senior tallied 42 kills, a .439 hitting percentage, 15 total blocks, 13 digs, and a pair of service aces.

Alexander ranks second in the GLIAC in points (4.10) and block assists (91), third in blocks (1.22), fifth in hitting percentage (.332), and seventh in kills (3.13).
