GVSU's DeLong receives GLIAC Men's Golf Player of the Year honors; all-conference teams revealed

GLIAC — Grand Valley State's Charles DeLong has been named 2023 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Monday, May 1. Ferris State's Caleb Bond earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors. Grand Valley State head coach Gary Bissell received coach of the year after leading the Lakers to the 2023 GLIAC Championship.

2023 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Charles DeLong, Grand Valley State
For the second consecutive season, Charles DeLong has been named GLIAC men's golf Player of the Year. DeLong had the best season of any individual in GVSU program history, taking home six individual titles, winning the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational (202), the Folds of Honor Challenge (206) and the Motor City Invite (143) this fall, and the Hargett Memorial Invitational (206), Argonaut Invitational (136) and Ken Partridge Invitational (205) this spring. DeLong has been named GLIAC Golfer of the Week on three separate occasions this season and is currently the number one ranked individual in the latest Golfstat individual rankings.


2023 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Caleb Bond, Ferris State
Ferris State University freshman standout Caleb Bond led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament berth this season along with a semifinal appearance at the GLIAC Championships. Bond compiled a total of six top-10 tournament finishes during his rookie season, including earning medalist honors following a playoff win at the Music City Invitational in Tennessee, helping him receive the GLIAC Golfer of the Week honor. Additionally, the All-GLIAC First Team selection finished the year by placing among the top 20 golfers in 10 of his 12 tournaments, including the 10-straight to close the season with three in the fall and all seven spring events. He took 16th place individually at the conference championships for FSU, which will compete in the NCAA D2 Midwest/Central Super Regional on May 11-13 in Winona, Minn. The Bulldogs will be making their 18th national tournament appearance in the last 20 years.

2023 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Gary Bissell, Grand Valley State
Head coach Gary Bissell was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career after leading the Lakers to their ninth GLIAC title in program history. The Lakers won the stroke play portion of the tournament, then beat Purdue Northwest and Wayne State in stroke play to take home the championship. This season, the Lakers have taken home eight tournament titles, and Bissell has coached two players to top-20 individual rankings, with Charles DeLong at number one and Nick Krueger coming in at 20.
