GV's Zielinski and HC's Stomps Chosen As GLIAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field "Athletes of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University sophomore Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind./North) and Hillsdale College senior Jason Stomps (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's outdoor track and field "Athletes of the Week," respectively.

Grand Valley State’s Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind.) automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational. The sophomore finished in 16th place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:37.18, which is the second fastest time in school history.

Charger senior Jason Stomps picked up in the outdoor track season where he left off during indoor season, taking second place in the hammer throw with a mark of 206 feet, which was an NCAA outdoor automatic-qualifying mark. In his first attempt at the javelin throw in more than two years, Stomps placed seventh in the meet at Winthrop University with a toss of 165 feet, 3 inches.

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles competed at two different locations this past weekend.  AU took part in the South Carolina Weems Baskin Invite and the College of Wooster Open.  At the South Carolina Invitational, the Eagles had three athletes automatically qualify for nationals and had two provisionally qualify.  For the automatic qualifiers, Kurt Roberts qualified in the shot put (59-5.5), Ryan Loughney qualified in the hammer throw (207-7) and Mike Jeffery qualified in the hammer throw (206-10).  Blaine Maag provisionally qualified in two events; he qualified in the hammer throw (183-11) and the discus (165-5).  At the Wooster Open the Eagles had multiple first-place finishers which included DeAndre Davis (100 meter), Cyrus Granger (400 meter), Cory Lamar (800 meter), Nate Cooper (high jump) and Robert Robinson (pole vault).  The Eagles won the event with Walsh placing second.  Ashland next competes at the Nikoloff Invitational at Cincinnati on Saturday (April 3).

 

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University men’s track and field team opened the 2010 outdoor campaign by sending selected individuals to the annual Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University this past weekend (March 26-27) in Raleigh, N.C. The prestigious meet took place at the Paul Derr Track and featured competitors from schools at all levels including NCAA Division I programs such as N.C. State, Ohio State, North Carolina, Seton Hall, George Mason, Duke, Rutgers, Georgetown and more.Senior Brian Reynolds led the FSU men with a fourth place performance in the fifth section of the 5,000 meters (16:04.19).Senior Greg Burns tied for sixth place in the pole vault (15-7) while finishing as the highest non-Division I competitor in the field.Senior Mike Mangieri wound up seventh in section two of the 1,500 meters (4:02.38) with Ryan Chute taking 19th place in the same race (4:04.73). Mangieri also was seventh in the second section of the 5,000 meters (14:43.51).Sophomore Tyler Crossman placed 11th in the third section of the 5,000 meters (15:09.70), freshman David Silversmith took 16th overall in section four of the 5,000 meters

 

 

Findlay Oilers

The University of Findlay men’s outdoor track and field teams competed at the Polar Bear Invitational on Saturday, March 27 in Marion, Indiana.  Lucas Hortsman won the 110-meter hurdles at 16.04 while Derrick Vicars was first in the discus at 160’09, a provisional qualifying mark. Vicars also added a first in the shot put with a provisional toss of 54’08.00, Nathaniel Kurtz took second in the shot put with a provisional heave of 53'03.00, Greg Schaible was second in the 400-meter dash at 48.87, Cody Crockett was second in the javelin with a provisional and school record breaking heave of 193’10, Timothy Sanders was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.09, Findlay’s 4x100-meter relay team of Jesse Ramirez, Curtis Smithey, De'Jon Faulkner and Lyndon Johnson captured the silver at 43.45 and the Oilers 4x400-meter relay team of Shawnathan Fort, Joe Guerra, Erik Birkholz and Colin Waltour took second at 3:21.73. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 3 at the Oliver Nikoloff Invite in Cincinnati, Ohio.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

Grand Valley State’s Paul Zielinski (Columbus, Ind.) was the lone Laker competing this weekend at the Stanford Invitational. The sophomore ran the second fastest time in school history in the 10,000-meter run, placing 16th. Zielinski crossed the finish line with a time of 29:37.18, which automatically qualified him for the 2010 Outdoor Championships. The Lakers will compete Saturday, April 3, at Aquinas.

 

 

Hillsdale Chargers

The Hillsdale College men's track teams migrated south to Rock Hill, South Carolina to open the 2010 outdoor season this weekend. Multi-All-American Jared Krout was at it again, finishing first in the 400 (47.96 seconds) and second in the long jump. Charles Wysong won his first attempt at the 3000 meter steeplechase, finishing the challenging event in 9:41.89. news story image Sprinter Skyler Dooley (pictured) was one of the top five in both the 100 and 200, while Timothy Howse was first in the 5000 meter run, winning with a time of 15:09.80. National champion weight thrower Jason Stomps took second in his outdoor debut for the season in the hammer throw, just ahead of third-place teammate Aaron Falk.

 

 

Lake Superior State Lakers

The Lake Superior State University men’s track and field team open their season on Saturday, April 3 at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.

 

 

 

Michigan Tech Huskies

Michigan Tech opened the season with a third place team finish at the Sherman Lukoski Invite hosted by Ripon College on March 27th. Quinn Parnell led the team with a win in the 100 (11.21) and a second in the 200 (22.75). He teamed up Jonathon Folse, Aaron Tetzloff and Tylor Rathsac for a win in the 4x100 in 43.45. Tech also won the 4x400 in 3:30.56. Members of the relay include Ken Gilkerson, Rathsack, Aaron Cedergren and Nathan Saliga. Gilkerson also won the 800 in 1:56.90. Other wins on the day included Brian Stetter in the 5,000 (15:21.29) and Jason Julien in the discus (143-8).

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University track and field teams opened up the outdoor portion of their schedule at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invite. No team scoring was taken at the event, which consisted mainly of Division I schools. On the men's side, Kevin Lawson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) earned the win in the 100 with a time of 10.80. Craig Borsenik (Durand, Mich./Corunna) had three top-three finishes at the meet. He won the discus (157-6), finished second in the shot put (45-2.25) and third in the hammer (179-8). Bill Smith (Comstock Park, Mich.) claimed a pair of second place finishes, clocking a 22.29 in the 200 and a 15.02 in the 110 meter hurdles. Travis Blunt (Sebewaing, Mich./USA) also earned a second place finish thanks to running a 51.67 in the 400. Northwood will compete at the Bulldog Open April 10

 

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s track & field team opens the outdoor portion of its schedule this Saturday (Apr. 3) at the MSU Invitational.

 

 

Tiffin Dragons

Tiffin University’s men’s track team won the Cedarville Open, beating 14 other teams with a strong performance. TU had four event champions, with Lee Miller winning the pole vault with a vault of 4.75 meters, Justin Ware won both the 100 (10.81) and the 200 meters (21.94), and the 4x100 squad won in 42.25. Other standouts for the men included John Pemberton (3rd in shot put), Antoine Allen (3rd in long jump, 2nd in triple jump), Eric Maag (4th in high jump), Kyle Anderson (3rd in 10,000), Ramone Brant (2nd in 110 hurdles), and the 4x400 relay team (3rd).
