WSU's Grey and GVSU's Barrett recognized with GLIAC Tennis Player of the Week honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its ninth tennis weekly awards for the 2023 campaign. Wayne State junior Daniel Grey was honored as GLIAC Men's Player of the Week while Grand Valley State senior Taylor Barrett won the women's player of the week award. 


MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Daniel Grey, Wayne State

Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) had a perfect performance over the weekend at Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. The junior won both his singles matches in straight sets, defeating LSSU's Lluc Limongi Ollers 7-6 (3), 7-5 on Friday, March 31st, before handling Leon Sell of MTU by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 on Saturday, April 1st. Grey also went 2-0 in doubles over the weekend with partner Cedric Drenth. The third-ranked pairing in the nation nipped Aaron Osmond and Maxence Hamon in a 7-6 (9-7) tiebreaker to start the weekend against the Lakers and capped it with a strong 6-2 triumph over the Huskies' duo of Sell and Vitor Jordao. Grey has won all four singles matches and all four doubles matches (all with Drenth) to begin conference play. 


WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Taylor Barrett, Grand Valley State

Taylor Barrett (Holly, Mich.) has been named GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this year. Barrett helped lead the Lakers to a pair of conference wins against Davenport and Purdue Northwest. She went 2-0 in singles both from the No. 2 position and claimed a doubles win at the No. 1 spot. Barrett claimed a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 three-set win in a 5-2 win at Davenport on Friday, before earning a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win in a 6-1 win over Purdue Northwest on Saturday. The Lakers are in first place in the GLIAC with a 4-0 record and will face Ferris State at home this Saturday at 1:00 PM.
