GLIAC reveals swimmers and divers of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its sixth weekly awards of the 2023-24 swimming & diving season. Grand Valley State swept the awards, with Eric Hieber and Lucy Hedley earning GLIAC Swimmer of the Week honors and Matthew Blommel and Maddie Kooistra receiving GLIAC Diver of the Week recognition.


MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Eric Hieber, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior Eric Hieber turned in an outstanding performance in the Lakers’ 157-142 victory over Division I foe Oakland University Friday.  Hieber, the defending National Champion in the 1650 free, captured individual wins in the 200 free (1:39.47) and 500 free (4:28.89), while finishing second in the 1650 free (16:14.27). Hieber hit NCAA B cuts in the 200 and 500 free.

WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Lucy Hedley, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State sophomore Lucy Hedley played a major role in the Lakers’ 163-137 victory over Division I foe Oakland University Friday. Hedley tallied first-place finishes and hit the NCAA B cut in three individual events, 50 free (23.66), 100 free (51.56) and 200 free (1:50.58). In addition, Hedley was a part of GVSU’s 400 free relay that finished second in 3:30.28. Hedley has captured two GLIAC Swimmer of the Week honors this season.


MEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Matthew Blommel, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State freshman Matthew Blommel was a key figure in the Lakers’ 157-142 victory over Division I Oakland University Friday. Blommel tallied first-place finishes on the 1-meter (260.10) and 3-meter (264.08) boards en route to his second GLIAC Diver of the Week honor.

WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Maddie Kooistra, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior Maddie Kooistra was a key contributor in the Lakers’ 163-137 victory over Division I foe Oakland University Friday. Kooistra finished second on the 3-meter board with a score of 259.43, while her score of 244.95 on the 1-meter board was good for a third-place finish. Kooistra has earned three GLIAC Diver of the Week honors this season.
