GLIAC announces indoor track & field athletes of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its second weekly awards of the 2023-24 indoor track & field season. Davenport freshman Damarcus Rouse Jr. was named GLIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Grand Valley State Lakers earned the other three honors, with Maria Mitchell (women's track), Jonathan Rankins-James (men's field) and Erika Beistle (women's field) being recognized. 


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Damarcus Rouse Jr., Davenport

Damarcus Rouse Jr. finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 48.04 for a new personal best at the GVSU Holiday Open. He also finished fourth in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 21.78.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Maria Mitchell, Grand Valley State

Junior Maria Mitchell earns her first GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors this season, after recording a fourth place finish in the women's mile last weekend. Mitchell finished with a new personal-best time of 4:49.16, in addition to surpassing the DII provisional mark of 4:56.85.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jonathan Rankins-James, Grand Valley State

Jonathan Rankins-James led the Lakers' high jump crew to a 1,2,3 finish at the Holiday Open last weekend, earning himself first place. Rankins-James recorded a huge new personal-best as he cleared a height of 2.22m, beating his previous best of 2.18m and just shy of breaking the Grand Valley State record of 2.23m. Rankins-James is currently the Division II season leader in the men's high jump.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Erika Beistle, Grand Valley State

Sophomore Erika Beistle, earns her first GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades this season after finishing in first place for the Lakers in the women's shot put. Beistle recorded a huge new personal-best in the women's shot put, throwing for a distance of 16.77m. Beistle now sits in the Top 10 on the USTFCCCA All-Time Record List, ranking eighth overall and is currently the Division II season leader.
